Finding Creative Ways to Support the Arts: Artist Devin Howell Curry
Devin Howell Curry earned a Bachelor's degree in Anthropology from Florida Atlantic University (FAU). She received her MFA in Painting at the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma. She participated in the intensive program at Mount Gretna School of Art in 2016 and was also selected as a Four Pillars Artist in 2019. Her work has been exhibited nationally, including New York City, Richmond, VA, Lancaster, PA, Tulsa, OK, Cambridge, and Boston, MA. In 2019 Devin was featured in New American Paintings, #141 MFA Annual. She currently works as an associate faculty member at Post University in Waterbury, CT. She lives in Fredericksburg, Virginia, with her husband and son.
"My still life paintings incorporate both recorded observation and invention. The arrangements consist of objects that carry personal meaning: ceramic pieces made by my great grandmother, trinkets that belonged to my grandmother, and books of women artists I feel a connection with. I often add a self-portrait in the work, placing myself within the same space of the women I reference. I am interested in lineage (both biological and artistic), the connection between women, and the objects we keep to remember the women who came before us. While I do think of the work as possessing a narrative, I also see it as an attempt to chronicle what is lost, a mapping process, a charting of both spatial proximity and what can never truly be known."

Gallerists Ashley Noyes & Bryce Smith on Creating a Collaborative & Innovative Space for Artists
This week I’m chatting with gallerists Ashley Noyes and Bryce Smith, who created the amazing space Naranjo 141 in Mexico this past year. In this episode we talk about how they both got their start in the arts and what inspired them to start Naranjo 141.
NARANJO 141, founded in 2023 in Mexico City by Ashley Noyes and Bryce Smith, is a project-based contemporary art gallery and residency program dedicated to local and international emerging artists. The program is focused on providing an accessible platform to support, engage and grow today’s talent. As a meeting place for artists and the community, we are particularly committed to fostering a narrative founded on the joint, collaborative voices of the artists, galleries and collectors of this generation.

Hilton Als on Diane Arbus and Alice Neel
I couldn’t be more excited to say that my guest on the GWA Podcast is one of the most renowned writers, curators, critics, and cultural commentators in the world right now… Hilton Als!
A Pulitzer prize winner, a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the theatre critic at the New Yorker, where he has been writing since 1994, Als is also the author of numerous books – from White Girls (a collection of 13 literary essays, exploring race, gender, interpersonal relationships) to more recently, My Pinup, an intimate study on his friendship with Prince. He is a teaching professor at Berkeley, and has held previous posts at Columbia, Yale, and more.
Als has been one of my favourite writers, and curators, on art since I can remember. He writes in a manner that is intimate, with emotion and rigour, infusing it with stories from his upbringing in Crown Heights in Brooklyn to ones with more complex family dynamics.
And there is a humanity at the centre of it: whether it's his ability to make us see artists as people – with their struggles, desires, needs and complexities – or his belief that we can all be artists too. Often tracing the city of New York through images and words, he unearths stories that were often cast out from mainstream institutions but feel so pertinent for the world today. From Alice Neel to Diane Arbus, whose work and subject he treats with such empathy, not only can he transport us to the exact street where Arbus took that picture, or to Neel’s 108th street apartment, but writes so acutely on the mediums they used.
On photography vs painting he has said: The former takes life as it comes, in an instant, but can be described as a series of selective moments. Painting, on the other hand, has time on its side, the better to know, delve, and express what it’s like for two people to sit in a room, observing one another while talking or not talking about the world.
And it is the latter that I still remember experiencing, being a gallery assistant in my early 20s at Victoria Miro, at the time of one of his many brilliant curated exhibitions – Alice Neel, Uptown – when I saw the whole world walk in, recognise themselves and feel seen and celebrated – which, I think, is the best outcome an exhibition can have…
In this episode we discuss the power of language and the importance of sharing it; Hilton's introductions to art; his early days as a photo-editor that informed him as a curator; and his takes on Diane Arbus and Alice Neel.

Fine Art Print Fair at BAIA Gallery
Faron Manuel is the Director of the Black Art In America (BAIA) Foundation. A 501c3 organization that provides funding and professional development opportunities for Black artists and arts professionals in Atlanta and beyond. Before joining the BAIA Foundation, Manuel oversaw two Mellon Foundation-funded curatorial fellowship grants at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta from 2016-2023. Before joining the High Museum, he was the Special Projects Curatorial Assistant to the Clark Atlanta University Art Museum Director. He also served as the Assistant Editor at Black Art In America from 2015-2016, where he regularly interviewed collectors and reported widely on contemporary art.
Manuel earned his B.A. in History from Clark Atlanta University in 2015, where he completed several museum fellowships. He has worked as an independent curator and art writer with notable collections and institutions over the years, doing much to expand the footprint of early-career artists. He was presented with the Hammonds House Honors Award for Curatorial Excellence in 2019 and recently served as a Resource Specialist for the Aspen Institute’s 2022 Fall Workshop Series on grant program development.
