Out of the Blue Jim and Teal discover a Hidden Gem
Out of the Blue is a little-seen film from 1980. Starring Linda Manz and directed by Dennis Hopper, Out of the Blue gained cult status over the years. Still, it was a difficult film to find outside of a VHS copy kicking around. Thanks to Chloe Sevigny and Natasha Lyonne, the film received a restoration a couple of years ago, and Jim and Teal watched the movie for the first time.
It's dark subject matter, for sure, but Out of the Blue offers amazing performances by Manz and Hopper, who also co-stars. Why should you consider checking it out? Jim and Teal will tell you.
What else? Hopping Vampires from Hong Kong anyone? Jim finds himself quite taken with Criterion Channel's latest offering with a 5-film series focused on those lovable hopping vampires that swept Hong Kong cinema in the 1980s.

Barbenheimer: Jim and Teal Take on the Cultural Hit of the Summer
Barbenheimer is more than a mashup word; it's a cultural phenomenon. Jim took the challenge and saw both Oppenheimer and then Barbie. Did he survive? It's a battle of the unruly teens vs. old man Jimmy. Will texting and watching videos during a movie ruin Jim's good time seeing Barbie? You'll have to tune in to find out.
And while Barbie was probably the last film on Teal's radar screen at the beginning of the summer, he too checked out the pop-culture sensation and was surprised by the depth and layers the movie had in store. Right-wing crybabies like Ben Shapiro, beware; this film may contain scenes of intense positivity towards women. Seek your nearest theater exit for safety.

Jim and Teal are not Afraid of Beau is Afraid
This week Jim and Teal bring on the good films at theaters and streaming this summer with Wes Anderson's Asteroid City, a hidden gem from Norway, Sick of Myself, and Ari Aster's Beau is Afraid. Are Jim and Teal afraid of Ari Aster's three hour fever dream? Of course not. They took it on, and there is a lot to say. Teal finds interesting comparisons to Lindsey Anderson's O Lucky Man, and Jim agrees.
What else? Jim dials up some destiny with the latest Indiana Jones movie, and guess what's currently filming in Jim's state of Vermont? Jim fills Teal in on his excursion to East Corinth, VT to check out the exterior town sets for Beetlejuice 2.

The Flash in the Pan: When America Decided DC Stands for, Don’t Care
The Flash, the latest comic book summer tent movie arrived and imploded. What went wrong? Why did audiences turn away in droves? Jim saw the movie, and he provided Teal with a report. Also, why did Disney seemingly cut six second from the Academy Award-winning French Connection? And why is Discovery Warner Brothers CEO, David Zaslav bent on proving how much he hates movies by chopping the heads off the brain trust at TCM (Turner Classic Movies)?

TvA: Teal Versus Antonioni
It's tit-for-tat on this week's Stuff We've Seen as Jim chooses two films from the 2022 BFI Sight and Sound Critics Poll of the 264 greatest films of all time that he believes should not be on the list. In their place, Jim finds two suitable replacements.
One film that Jim targets for demotion is Antonioni's 1962 film, L'Eclisse. While Jim didn't feel the film, as a whole, warranted a place on a list of the greatest films of all time, it was one ten-minute sequence during the first portion of the movie that shocked and upset him, and led Jim to determine that L'Eclisse must be re-evaluated.
What did Teal think? L'Eclisse left him so angry that he is now a confirmed Antonioni hater. What???

Enys Men and Bait: Mark Jenkin, the Celluloid Warrior
Cornish filmmaker Mark Jenkin puts the film back in movie making with his latest offering, Enys Men. This 16mm environmental horror/ filmic poetry tomb is a visual feast for those looking for something further afield. Jim and Teal explore Jenkin's two features, Enys Men, and his 2019 feature debut, Bait. Both movies create an atmosphere all their own, with a look unlike anything else out there.
Also, to start off this episode, Jim gives Teal a report on seeing Med Hondo's 1977 film, West Indies: The Fugitive Slaves of Liberty, which he caught at a rare screening at the Harvard Film Archive.

BFI 250 list, we just can quit you. Jim is still on his mission to see all 264 films on the 2022 Sight & Sound Critics Poll of the Greatest Films of All Time List. On this episode, Teal quizzes Jim on some of his least favorite selections from the list. While they are not all bad films in Jim's opinion, he found it difficult to reconcile the motives behind their inclusion on a critic's list of ten of the greatest films to include.

2023 Oscar Predictions: No Country for Old Wells
Since Jim and Teal won't be taping a post-Oscar's episode they wanted to weigh in on the big night and talk about 2023 Oscar Predictions before the show. The 2022 BFI Sight and Sound Critics Top 250 Greatest Films
Every decade the BFI's Sight and Sound magazine publishes its poll of the top 100 greatest films in two separate lists created by film directors and then critics, scholars, facilitators, and educators. In February 2023 they followed those lists up with a companion list of the top 250 greatest films of all time as voted by the critics.
These lists are always debatable and controversial, but the decision to make the list more inclusive and include more women filmmakers added to the controversy of what makes a film the greatest. And the shakeup landed Chantel Ackerman's Jeanne Dielman at number 1.
That may have been the biggest headline from this list, but certainly not the last word.
Jim and Teal provide their thoughts on the top 100, and subsequent lists in this first of what should be several episodes this year on the BFI selections. The Fabelmans: Steven Spielberg Gets Personal
This week Jim and Teal enter the Spielboctagon. Their mission: tackle the entire Steven Spielberg filmography. Spoiler alert! They don't get very far. But in this first, of at least two episodes (who knows how long it will take them to get through every movie) they dive straight into Steven Spielberg's latest offering, The Fabelmans.
You may not know it from the awful movie trailer, but The Fabelmans is a great film, and certainly Spielberg's most personal. Gut wrenching at times, inspiring at others, this is a movie that needs to be seen, and Jim and Teal hope you do go and search it out.
In addition to The Fabelmans, Jim and Teal tackle the early part of Spielberg's movie career, including his made for TV film, Duel, his first feature film, The Sugarland Express, his massive hits, Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and his first miss fire, the 1979 comedy, 1941.

Fascism on Film: The Mortal Storm and A Special Day
Jim and Teal begin an ongoing series dedicated to discussing Fascism on Film, and the way filmmakers handle this timely topic over the years. For this first episode they talk about two films that look at the rise of Nazism in Europe, and then the axis pact between Hitler and Mussolini. The Mortal Storm is an unsparing look at the dangers coming to Europe. Set in 1933, this film premiered in 1940, shortly after Hitler began his invasion of Europe. A Special Day takes place in 1938, on the day Hitler visited Italy to seal his agreement with Mussolini. Both films pack a punch, and Jim and Teal give them both high marks.

There's lots of new movies out streaming right now, and a few gems that one can catch in the theaters. In this episode Jim and Teal do a bunch of capsule reviews of the following films: Weird: The Al Yankovich Story, Causeway, Don't Worry Darling, Decision to Leave, Banshees of Inisherin, Amsterdam, and Soft & Quiet.
That's a lot of movies! And there were so many that Jim and Teal ran out of time to talk about the movie they really wanted to talk about, Tar. They recorded it, but to give you, the listener, the full scoop, Jim and Teal opted to create a second episode which will include their entire Tar conversation. Halloween Ends, and so does Jim and Teal's month-long binge of horror movies. From the Criterion Channel's 80s collection to new horror fare like Barbarian, Pearl, and Halloween Ends, there is a lot of ground to cover.
Jim and Teal note that 2022 is turning out to be a banner year for the horror genre with a lot of well-received, both with critics and box office, films like Barbarian and Smile, and rebooted franchises such as Hellraiser and Halloween.

A look at Criterion Channel’s 80s Horror Collection
That's right, it's horror month. October is a great time to catch up on horror movies, and that's exactly what Jim and Teal did. Using the Criterion Channel's 30-film 80s horror film series as their guide, Jim and Teal set out to see some horror flicks that eluded them over the years.
The Criterion Channel's list features some real obscurities of titles Jim and Teal never heard of before. Frank Henenlotter (Basket Case, Brain Damage, Frankenhooker) may have become a new favorite of theirs.
And the collection provided opportunities for J&T to take several side trips to other horror films.
A spooky time should be had by all when you listen to this episode.

West Side Story, House of Gucci, and Inherent Vice
Just in time for the holidays the Morlock is back with three films he checked out in the theater. First up is Lady Gaga in House of Gucci. Is Ridley Scott back with his new movie, or is it more of his style-less fare? Next up is Steven Spielberg's semi-reimagining of the musical classic, West Side Story. It's not doing well in theaters, but that doesn't mean the Morlock wasn't impressed. And finally the Movie Morlock took in a rare 70mm screening of Paul Thomas Anderson's, Inherent Vice. Seeing a 70mm print of this particular film was a long goal of the Morlock's and he's excited to tell you all about it.

Last Night in Soho
Director Edgar Wright offers up a tantalizing psychological thriller that's loads of fun. Last Night in Soho is the film, and the Movie Morlock and his guest, Shannon from whatshannonwatched were keen to dissect the movie.
Last Night in Soho. is filled with eye-popping visuals and clever call-backs to various British films of the 60s, and it's wide-screen cinematography is best appreciated on the big screen. It's still out in theaters, and Shannon and the Morlock hope you can venture out to see it.

Actor/Musician/Voice Over Artist Craig Wasson joins James Kent (The Movie Morlock) to discuss the 1979 film, The Outsider. This little-seen gem is a stark depiction of the political turmoil in Northern Ireland during The Troubles in the early 1970s. Filmed while the conflict was still in full-force, both sides took issues with the film's unsparring portrayal of the lengths factions will go to see their goals met. Caught in the middle is Wasson's idealistic American Viet-Nam veteran who finds himself a disposal pawn to further each's cause.
Wasson gives listeners an inside peak into the making of this film, and shares some additional tales of his adventures over the years.

Neo Noir Part 5: Watching the Kid Detectives
After watching 26 #NeoNoir films on #TheCriterionChannel Jim and Bill finally arrive at Part 5 of their journey. That's right, it's the final Neo Noir episode.

The Return of the Somerville Theatre
The Somerville Theatre in Davis Square, Somerville, Massachusetts is one of Jim's all-time favorite cinema haunts. But since March of 2020 the pandemic's kept the theatre closed. But good news awaits those fans of cinema, and seeing films projected in formats such as 35MM and 70MM, the Somerville Theatre is set to reopen its doors later this summer, and with some exciting new changes.
Joining Jim and Teal to discuss those changes, and what the Somerville Theatre has in store for fans of all types of entertainment is Ian Judge, Creative Director of The Somerville Theatre. Ian's spent a good portion of his professional life managing cinemas, including the past 19 at the Somerville Theatre.

93rd Academy Awards Oscar Wrap Up
If Billy Crystal were singing it's a good bet he wasn't singing, 'It's a Wonderful Night for Oscar,' after Sunday night's bizarre pandemic-limited ceremony. So many blunders occurred that night, that hate it or just not willing to say you hated it, the Academy Awards could not overcome a year in which many big Hollywood films never released, and the typical yuks and attempts at comedy were sidelined.
What did we get instead? A whole lot of long, long, speeches, and very little in the way of entertainment. But what about the awards themselves? Jim and Teal have the entire breakdown, and the majority of this episode is devoted to discussing the Academy Awards for the last time until...next week? Are the 2022 Oscars next week? Shadow in The Cloud and Wolf of Snow Hollow
It's a week of genre excitement as Jim and Teal break down the horror comedy film, Wolf of Snow Hollow by Jim Cummings, and then take a dive into the 'jump the shark' waters of c-grade movie entertainment with the action/horror WW2 bomber-themed Shadow in the Cloud. What starts out as an intriguing bottle movie quickly dissolves into an over-the-top action film that defies all levels of believability. Chloe Grace Moretz tries her best to salvage the wreckage, but there is no pulling this plane out of the nose dive.
And if things weren't bad enough, Jim and Teal discover the film's screenwriter is Max Landis, bad boy son of director John Landis. You don't want to miss what Jim and Teal have to say about that.
But here is one vessel that wasn't sinking, Captain Phillips. Teal caught up with the 2013 Paul Greengrass action thriller, and Jim did a rewatch.

Craig Wasson: Thank God for My Guitar
Craig Wasson is a name many will recognize from some key films in the 1980s, from Body Double to Ghost Story and Nightmare on Elm Street. Wasson was certainly a favorite of Both James and Teal, and through a bit of luck, and an introduction made by their friend Al, Wasson was kind enough to come on Stuff We've Seen.

WW84, Midnight Sky, and Losey, Losey, Losey!
This first episode of 2021 starts off with a couple of streaming stinkers, WW84, and Midnight Sky. WW84 is HBOMax's much anticipated sequel to Wonder Woman, and it hits so far off the mark the movie left Jim wondering who green lit this thing?

Mank: David Fincher's Technically Detailed Look at Hollywood's Past
Mank is one of the eagerly awaited year-end films from Netflix. Directed by David Fincher, Mank is about the writing of one of the most famous films of all time, Citizen Kane. How does one go about writing a fictionalized film loosely based on William Randolph Hearst? How does one tell a fictionalized story about the washed up Hollywood writer who would create a genuine script masterpiece?
So far, the critical response to Mank is mixed. What were people expecting? Is Mank too much of an art film for the regular film goer? Did people just want a detailed look at the making of Citizen Kane? For that, they could rewatch the HBO film, RKO 281, which pretty much covers that.

Death by Alogrithm: The Search for Movies with Style, Substance, and Soul
How did things go off the rails so quickly? Jim and Teal quickly find themselves down a rabbit hold of Robert Zemeckis' making, and the only way out of it is through the films of Yorgos Lanthimos. Teal finally watched Alps and Dogtooth, and he's all in with the daring Greek director's original filmic vision.
But that then sends Teal into complaint mode, as he found himself watching two paint-by-numbers genre movies on Netflix that were so devoid of style and substance, he swears they were designed by an algorithm.

Investigation of Two Citizens Above Suspicion: The Tale of Prospero's Books.
The Year was 1992. The place: The Angelika Film Center on the corner of Houston and Mercer. Jim was a senior at NYU, and is his new roommate, Bill, was a junior. An innocent mid-week trip to the Greenwich Village art-house multiplex to see Peter Greenaway's latest offering, Prospero's Books took our humble narrators into some uncharted territory. Things started off innocently enough, but soon they'd get a bit hairy.
One this week's episode of Stuff We've Seen, Bill Muir (aka, Bill from Queens) sits in for Teal once again. The goal of this installment was to discuss the films of Mike Leigh, but things quickly got off track with a request from Bill to hear some Jimmy impersonations. Da 5 Bloods: Spike Lee's Hangout Movie
This week on Stuff We've Seen Jim and Teal discuss three films, starting with Spike Lee's latest, and one of his best, Da 5 Bloods. Now available to stream on Netflix, Spike Lee's gritty buddy, adventure/ Vietnam War reckoning film has laughs, tears, adventure, anger, friendship...you name it, and this film seems to have it. Jim and Teal both give it high marks.
Also this week, Jim and Teal uncover a cult gem from 2019, director Peter Strickland's In Fabric. It is weird, atmospheric, and has loads of dark horror comedy. If you like films a bit on the weird side, this movie may be your new favorite.
And if that wasn't enough to fill your movie lists, Jim also recommends Mike Leigh's 2010 film, Another Year, which is currently streaming on the Criterion Channel.

Original Cast Album: Company
Original Cast Album: Company is a 53-minute documentary by the late great legend, D.A. Pennebaker. It documents the original cast recording of the theatrical 1970 musical, Company, by Stephen Sondheim. Jim's obsession with seeing this documentary began last year when he saw the IFC Documentary Now! Spoof on this film, Co-op. Now, thanks to The Criterion Channel, Jim got his wish--and he's obsessed.
On this week's episode of Stuff We've Seen, Jim and Teal discuss Company, the Documentary Now! spoof, and the genius of D.A. Pennebaker's fly-on-the-wall camerawork, and tension-building editing.

George Floyd's Murder and The Rise of Authoritarianism
George Floyd's Murder, and the subsequent outcry of anger towards the never-ending systemic racism and aggression against people of color at the hands of institutions sworn to protect and serve us weighed heavy on Jim and Teal's minds. Watching the government's response towards peaceful protests were something they could not ignore. So on this week's episode, Jim and Teal veered from their normal format and opened the show with some thoughts about this latest chapter in America's 400-year struggle for equality and justice for people of color.
The second half of the show features a few films Jim's recently seen that detail various injustices by governments and fascist atrocities of WW2. Teal discusses a few new film's he's caught on streaming to end the program.
We promise a return to our normal format for future episodes, but current events were too important to ignore this week.

I Am Not A Witch: The Return of Carrie and Women Filmmakers
Cornell Communications' Specialist, Carrie Chalmers returns to the show for a discussion focused on several women film directors. First up is Rungano Nyoni's spellbinding 2017 film, I Am Not A Witch. A semi-satyrical look at women in bondage with a spellbinding lead performance by Maggie Mutubwa. A film with so many twists and turns Jim decided to cut out some of the reveals mentioned during the program to avoid spoiling it for those who may watch this film later. The Beaver Trilogy: Part 4 and Academy Awards of the 2000s: Part 1
Sometimes the algorithm Gods of Amazon Prime throw one a gem. This week Jim talks about an odd documentary called The Beaver Trilogy: Part 4. It's a story of a small-time, almost Hollywood director, Trent Harris, and his trilogy of films based on a real-life person he met in Utah in the late 70s. There are plenty of twists and turns in this story, and Jim suggests you seek it out.
Next it is on to more Academy Award nominated Best Picture nominees. This time around Jim and Teal tackle the first decade of the new millennium, but there is so much to say they only get through the first five years. Lots of interesting films nominated, and some shameful omissions, along with some head-scratching Academy picks. Plus, this time around Jim brings some suggestions for each year of movies that might be better than the Academy's choices.
