2020 – A year like no other | Hugh Carthy the complete package but will EF back him for GC in 2021?
Brad and Graham are back and joined by living legend Sean Kelly for the last episode of the Bradley Wiggins Show this year to dissect a season like no other.  The trio deliberate on the truncated racing calendar with Sam Bennett and Tao Geoghegan Hart’s exploits at the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia lauded. King Kelly breaks down his nerves as protégé Bennett sealed Champs-Élysées glory.   Primoz Roglic, who saw a maiden Tour de France win agonisingly taken from his grasp by Tadej Pogačar, bounced back to claim a consecutive Vuelta a España to continue an astounding few years.   Elsewhere, Hugh Carthy was the latest breakthrough act in a season of breakthroughs, and Brad calls the Lancashire rider the finished package, who has a genuine chance of winning a Grand Tour. However, will EF Pro Cycling back him?  2012 Tour de France winner Brad expects Team Ineos to bounce back after – despite Giro success – a disappointing season but raises questions over some of the signings the British-based team have made. Chris Froome, who is set to sign with Israel Start-Up Nation for the 2021 season, expects excellence, adds Brad, and his team have made some astute signings to support the seven-times Grand Tour winner as he goes in search of a fifth Tour.  The trio wrap up with their moments of the season and expectations for next year. 196: Peiper on Pogacar: It was the pinnacle of my life
Allan Peiper was in the UAE Team Emirates car behind Tadej Pogacar during the dramatic time trial on La Planche des Belles Filles. The 60-year-old Australian describes the young Slovenian's victory over this compatriot Primoz Roglic as the pinnacle of his life and in this episode of The Cycling Podcast, Lionel talks to him about this year's Tour de France. It was a particularly poignant race for Peiper, who was diagnosed with cancer last year and was unsure whether he'd be able to work at the Tour de France. In this conversation, he talks about how he helped manage Pogacar through his sensational debut Tour, how management techniques have changed since his own racing days and what winning the yellow jersey meant to him. PYSO, ep. 80: Fabian Cancellara on a champion's mentality and the work that goes into it
In this episode of Put Your Socks On, the legendary Fabian Cancellara weighs on on the socks. "Socks — they need to be short," says the four-time world time trial champion. "Rapha always comes up and says the socks need to be high. No! That look is not stylish. That look it's just a no-go. So I want to have my socks short. And then it's stylish." The two-time Olympic time trial champion also points out that high socks are now aero equipment. "They think socks can give an advantage of one to five watts," he says. "There is a lot of discussion, but you know what is good? I'm out of the game. I just don't want the tan lines for when I am at the beach." Cancellara chats with Bobby Julich and Gus Morton about his long and storied career, which included three wins at both Paris-Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders. The Swiss racer also holds the record for most days in the Tour de France yellow jersey — 29 — for a rider who never won the overall. Cancellara wrapped up his career in high style right after the 2016 Olympic Games — "a better ending of a career was not possible" - but he says that his Flanders win in 2013 sticks out as a career highlight because of how hard he had to fight back after a challenging 2012. hard 2012. "2006 to ’16, I had a lot of success, but also a lot of hard times," he says, from crashes to cheating allegations. "I mean, in three weeks I gained 10 kilos. Ten days after the Olympics, I went from hero to zero. I had to learn to grow a thick skin." "To be in the spotlight, it's not easy. But if you want to win bike races, it's part of the game that when the spotlight comes you need to adapt to it and you need to be able to handle it," he says. "I worked with a life coach. I didn't only work on cycling skills, I worked on my own to have this responsibility in my daily life."

Ep. 61 - Ted King, FKT on the ARHCR
From 2006 to 2015 Ted King was a professional road cycling before switching to gravel where he took 1st at the DK200 in 2016 and 2018. Earlier this month he completed the 1,000+ mile Arkansas High Country Race in first with a time of 4 days, 20 hours, which was good enough to snag the FKT set by Jay Petervary in June of this year. The ARHCR is no walk in the park either. It may be easy to have your guard down when you see that the highest point on the route is only 2,745 ft. elevation, but in the words of friend and route creator Chuck Campbell "The valleys are low and the grade is steep". I got to preview a portion of the route in February and I got a first hand taste of the steepness. The route is littered with sharp grades going both up or down. There is very little flat sections, in most cases you're either going up or down. On Oct. 31st 2020 twenty ultra-endurance cyclist started from Fayetteville, AR. Racers can choose to go either CW or CCW, but regardless of which direction you go there is still 1,037 miles and over 80,000 ft of climbing through the Ozarks and Ouachitas in NW Arkansas. Of the 20 that started only 7 finished, which in itself is a testament to the toughness of this route. This was Ted's first attempt at an ultra endurance bikepacking event. He didn't have much experience bikepacking either, but that didn't stop him from signing up to tackle a very challenging course. Like many of you, I followed his dot closely to see if his wealth of experience in other disciplines of the sport would transfer over, or if the local Andrew Onermaa would be able to keep the crown away from King. In the end Ted would ultimately grit it out to win by beating out all previous FKT's, but for much of the race Andrew was on his heels never taking the pressure off. He recorded a video shortly after scratching that's worth watching. If you want to know how hard it is, this video scratches the surface of what it takes to compete at a high level against one of hell of a professional cyclist. Ted, congrats on your FKT, welcome to bikepacking! I can't wait to see what you set your sites on in the future.

The fifth element - magnesium stages a comeback
We’ve said before that we’re in a “golden age” of chain lube these days, with big advancements in recent months that not only reduce drivetrain friction but dramatically extend the lifespan of your components, too. We discuss the latest releases from CeramicSpeed and Silca — one for wet conditions, the other for dry — and make the argument for why they’re actually better bargains than you might think. We’re also on the cusp of a potentially big revolution in frame materials, with magnesium finally emerging (after multiple attempts in the past) as a truly viable alternative to carbon fiber, aluminum, titanium, and steel. James chats with Bruno Maier, the president of “Super Magnesium” maker Allite Inc., to find out exactly why magnesium is so promising, and why this time around might be different than before. James has already reviewed the new Vaast gravel bike if you're interested in reading about that. Finally, we cap off this episode with another round of Ask a Mechanic — albeit, without our resident pro mechanic, Zach Edwards, who we were sadly stuck in a giant vat of tubular glue while we recording. How do you true a wheel without a truing stand? How long will that spare tube last in your saddle pack? Is it safe to use a cheap bearing press? Can you bend a steel frame back into shape after a crash? And why are any of us still taking mechanical advice from Caley? All of these answers and more await within, and maybe next time we’ll actually find that mute button on Caley’s mic.
