PYSO, ep. 79: Skylar Schneider on pivoting from Boels-Dolmans to L39ION of Los Angeles
Skylar Schneider started riding bikes at age 4, and by age 18 she moved to Holland to race professionally. Now with three years at the powerhouse squad Boels-Dolmans under her belt, the American is returning to race domestically for 2021 with L39GION of Los Angeles, the expanding team run by Justin and Cory Williams. On this episode of Put Your Socks On, Schneider talks about learning her way in Holland as a teenager with the help of other racers — she now has Dutch residency — and how the opportunity with L39GION of LA came about. "I've admired what Justin and Cory are doing with Legion for a while," she said. "And this summer, Justin and I just got on the phone, and he had some good advice. At that time, Legion didn't really have a women's program. So he really liked the idea. And then we put together a budget. And from there, it moved pretty quickly. And I'm really excited about this opportunity to have a new adventure, but also come back to the U.S." In addition to her own racing, Schneider said L39ION represents a broader opportunity in the sport for others. "With 39ION, there was this new opportunity to do something really special within the sport. Their mission is to increase diversity and inclusivity. There's plenty of little girls that need a role model as well," she said. "Right now it's really small and just kind of starting, but I think it can grow into something really big. And that's ultimately why I was really excited to join." At the junior world championships in 2016, Schneider took silver in the road race and fourth in the time trial. Looking ahead, a win at the world championships remains a goal.

Explore returns with Escape From Lockdown, an episode celebrating the simple joy of riding a bike. The coronavirus pandemic has made it difficult to explore the world on two wheels. Most of the world has experienced lockdown or travel restrictions of some sort and we've all been tethered to home more than usual. For this episode, four riders took advantage of loosening restrictions to go cycling and they ended up enjoying four very different adventures. The result is an hour or so of pure escapism. Mainly road but Komoot took us over some amazing gravel too What are you most glad you took with you? Hannah: A pair of Vibram-soled trainers that could be rolled up easily, and so fit into my handlebar bag without taking up too much room. Also the Rapha Explore down jacket, which packs down into a small bag so doesn't take up a lot of room, but it's so nice to have warm and comfy clothing to change into at the end of a long day on the bike Ollie: Backpack Hannah: I will not accept this answer, I said to Ollie that if he ever came cycling with me again while wearing that backpack, I'd take it off him and burn it. This was explained to him about 155km into the first day of riding, while I was carrying it up a 3km climb that was ramping up to 12%! What do you wish you'd not left behind? Hannah: The outbound route for my Garmin...LOL! And the Garmin mount for the other bike. If there's more than one of you it's great if you can both see the route. It's a huge help having someone else share the navigation. It just lessens the load on your brain once you become fatigued, and it's always good to have two pairs of eyes checking that you're heading in the right direction Ollie: Chamois cream Hannah: Can I add another question? What do you wish you'd left behind? Ollie's 8kg rucksack. Frame bags are definitely the way to go. Cycling with that much weight on your back just makes things so much more hard work. It also means you get a lot more saddlesore. Highlight? Hannah: Has to be ascending Mont Ventoux and reaching the top of a mountain that has so much cycling history encapsulated within its slopes. Taking it all in, while having two hours of being inside your mind and body, experiencing your body go through moments of feeling strong and then moments of struggle. It's a wonderful moment that holds many parallels to life, especially after this year. However, will EF Pro Cycling back him?  2012 Tour de France winner Brad expects Team Ineos to bounce back after – despite Giro success – a disappointing season but raises questions over some of the signings the British-based team have made. Chris Froome, who is set to sign with Israel Start-Up Nation for the 2021 season, expects excellence, adds Brad, and his team have made some astute signings to support the seven-times Grand Tour winner as he goes in search of a fifth Tour.  The trio wrap up with their moments of the season and expectations for next year. 138: Q&A on Training Without Power, Optimizing Time at Your Desk, “Lunch Ride Syndrome,” and the Benefits of Fixies, with Amos Brumble
Amos Brumble is a New England legend. Is it because of his racing palmarès? His charm? His collection of guinea pigs? Or all of those things? We find out, and then we dive into some listener questions. David H. of Seattle, Washington asks: “Suppose a 55-year old athlete is training with a heart rate monitor and perceived effort and recovery scales and is able to train between 10-16 hours/week. No power measurements. The athlete's goal is to maximize performance on gravel races—about 100 miles and about 10,000 feet of climbing—which, with the exception of the first 20 miles or so, basically means a long time trial effort. Given that goal and training context, how would you recommend that a training plan be structured? I ask this question because so much of the discussion on your podcast references power. I understand why, but I don't have a power meter in part, for cost, and in part because heart rate is enough 'quantification.' I'm interested in the meaning and aesthetics of riding hard.” The next series of questions on low-cadence work comes from Ray Farris: “My impression from your podcast is that the low cadence sessions talked about in the session were fairly short efforts at high power. However, Steve Neal of the Cycling Gym, whom you have had on Fast Talk a couple of times, seems to like to give his athletes sessions of several intervals of 20-40 min at low cadence at tempo power, generally 83% of FTP, subject to an 83% of max heart rate limit on power. And I just watched a Lionel Sanders YouTube video in which his coach had him do multiple sessions of 40 minutes at 50-60rpm at what I roughly estimate is about 80% of FTP. What’s the thinking about these types of interval workouts? 1) Do these build FTP? 2) Are these “hard” workouts in the Seiler polarized model? Do they have a place in a polarized model and if so what is it and when is it in terms of periodization blocks? 3) Do these raise the athlete toward his theoretical VO2 max, but at the cost of lowering VLa max? Does this trade-off even matter for anyone other than pro level sprinters?” Our next question comes from Russ Sanka, in Bristol, Tennessee. And it’s a good one for anyone who has a desk job. He asks: “What can I do at a desk job to aid in training/recovery? I have been using a stand up desk and a desk cycle I would like to hear your opinions and the research on the subject.” This next question comes from Ivan S. from Milan, Italy. He asks: “I love to ride my fixie in the ‘off-season’ to train on. I feel like it helps me with training and strength that I can’t get on a geared bike. Is this true? If so, what am I gaining and how does that help me when I go back to the geared bike?” Our final question comes from Peter Burghardt. He asks: “Can you address 'lunch ride syndrome'—the tendency to go out the door and immediately hammer down because you've only got 45 minutes.
