BONUS EPISODE: Squats, Purpose and Plants. Your Healthy Ageing Prescription with Dr Kate Gregorevic
“One of the greatest gifts of being a doctor for older adults is the constant reminder that life is fragile, finite and precious.” On the show today is Dr Kate Gregorevic - a geriatrician and internal medicine physician. She works in both acute hospital medicine and community settings and has completed a PhD looking at the impact of positive psychosocial factors in the development of frailty in older adults Lifestyle medicine is a core feature of Kate’s clinical practice, and nutrition, exercise and sleep are integral to developing plans to optimise her patients’ health. Her approach goes beyond physical, by working with people to identify their own priorities and values, and always centring these in any management plans. On the show today we talk about: * How we balance the need to change health behaviours to improve longevity with the need to enjoy today * Why we should focus on creating health in the present, as something that is valuable in its' own right and helps us engage in life, rather than something for the future * The importance of including social and emotional wellbeing in any definition of health * The perspective of a Geriatrician * Assessing someone’s readiness to change and tips to motivate them * Sarcopenia and how to prevent this * Your prescription for healthy ageing (Squats, Purpose and Plants) * The impact of loneliness and how it activates a stressor response   Please do check out Dr Kate's book - Staying Alive - it's a really great read and has some fascinating information Visit The Doctor's Kitchen website for full show notes and links for this episode   See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

243: Erectile Dysfunction, Pleasure Trap/Ego Trap: Blaming the wrong things
In today's show, the Dr's answer and discuss the following questions: 1. My high blood pressure medication is causing me to underperform in the bedroom to the point where I feel extremely anxious, embarrassed, and guilty that I am losing this part of myself to old age.    My doctor says it's either the meds or a stroke, so I follow her advice.   My wife is very supportive, but I can't help but feel guilty.  How can I help her understand that I do love her and that it's not her physical appearance that is causing my malfunction? 2. Eating foods that make you feel horribly bad. Why am I abusing myself in such manner? Can you help me understand the cycle? 3. When caught between the pleasure and ego trap for food is one way out to somehow get to the point that you know you can eat whatever you want but truly don't want to eat the high fat food? Or is the only way out to be sick and your life depends on it? 4. Can you provide a succinct, complete definition of the term, "Pleasure Trap" in your book of the same name? 5. I’m curious as to why and how we got it so wrong for so long with regards to genetics vs environment. We blame genetics for chronic diseases (diabetes, high cholesterol, cancer, etc), and we blame environment for our personalities, intelligence, behaviors, and life choices. When in reality, it’s the opposite. Who we are individually is genetic, and what diseases we get are driven mostly by environment (food and lifestyle). Once we found out the earth was round and revolves around the sun, most people caught on. How long do you think will it take for society to ‘catch on’ to the truth about genes and environment?

FLASHBACK FRIDAY - A Skeptic Transforms: From Carnivore Diet to Plant Based
Eric Lindstrom once ate 68 chicken wings in one sitting. Today, he works full-time in animal advocacy and has written two books on veganism. What changed? The self-proclaimed carnivore adopted a plant-based diet over a bet with his wife. While he admittedly grumbled the whole time, what was intended to be a 30-day health kick turned into a lifelong passion. Once Eric discovered that he didn’t have to give up his favorite meaty, cheesy foods, he stopped grumbling and embraced the plant-based way of life. With his relatable personality and relaxed humor, Eric encourages others to adopt a plant-based diet by illustrating its bounty of delicious options and its accessibility. A father of two young children, Eric also helps parents navigate a family-wide switch to plant-based. Tune in for some laughs, insight, and practical tips to make the switch. What we discuss in this episode: - Eric’s past as an adamant meat-loving omnivore and his “reluctance” to go plant-based. - The bet between him and his wife that triggered his overnight adoption of the plant-based diet—and how he only thought it would be 30 days instead of the rest of his life. - The book that sparked Eric’s curiosity with diet change—Colleen Patrick Goudreau’s The 30-Day Vegan Challenge. - What to eat if you live in a rural area and don’t have access to alternative foods. - The bounty of plant-based options available in stores and online including Eric’s favorite products—Tinkyada Gluten-Free Pasta and Bob’s Red Mill Protein Powder. - Basic kid-friendly family meal ideas. - Eric’s two books—The Skeptical Vegan and The Smart Parent’s Guide to Raising Vegan Kids. - To support our mission to educate, inspire, and embolden the world to lean into eating plants instead of baby cow growth food, donate today to spread the word.
