Episode 14 - The Future of Work
Play • 47 min
In this episode of The Long View, Clare chats with two future of work experts: Amit Singh, former head of global policy at Uber and a former economics adviser to Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard, now at AlphaBeta consultancy; and Dr Jim Stanford, director of the Australia Institute’s Centre for Future Work and founder of the Progressive Economics Forum.

The future of work has come hurtling towards us faster than we could have imagined due to COVID-19, with vast numbers of Australians now working from home, travelling less and adopting platforms like Zoom throughout their working lives. But what else have we learned about our working future from this crisis, and what existing problems is it time to start addressing?

How do we get Australians dignified, secure work that supports them throughout their lives? Are the gig economy and other so-called innovations the end of work as we know it, or are they just capital, finding another clever way to deprive workers of their hard-won rights? And are robots really going to steal our jobs?
