32. When it starts as what you know & becomes what you love with Rebecca George
Behind the Beef is back and kicking off with a bang! In this episode of Behind the Beef we were joined by Angus Australia member Rebecca George.
Rebecca and her family are commercial Angus producers from Nevertire in New South Wales. Rebecca is an active member of the Angus Youth program, and over 20 years has taken part in various activities and events hosted by Angus Youth including the Angus Youth National Roundup and the GenAngus Future Leaders Program. She has also been a previous recipient of various scholarships through the Scholarships, Awards and Bursaries Program and member of the Roundup Organising and the Angus Youth Consultative Committees.
Most recently however, Rebecca was the recipient of the 2019 Kansas State University Scholarship. Bec has recently returned from her time abroad & and has joined us to tell Behind the Beef to her story in agricultural and the Angus breed, as well as to give us some insight into her time over in the US.

31. Market Movements with Jono Spence
This episode of Behind the Beef we were joined by Jono Spence, Director of livestock agency Spence Dix and Co, SA.
Jono is a well-regarded cattleman in the beef business. Jono has a background working in many facets of both stud and commercial sectors of the beef industry.
Coordinating the cattle side of the Spence Dix & Co business, Jonathan is also a recognized and experienced auctioneer.
Jono has joined me to talk market movements. Coming from the year that was 2022 in all its highs, we were interested in the opinion of someone with boots on the ground regarding what he had observed of the market in his region, as well as around the country, what trends have been noted, the final markets for seedstock and commercial animals being sold out of South Australia and the all-important crystal ball predictions.

30. Using Your Passion to Make Change with Milly Nolan & Cam Parker
In this episode of Behind the Beef we will be joined by Milly Nolan and Cam Parker, who through their roles in the industry are working to make change in terms of bettering and sustaining the industry in different ways.
Milly is a farmer/shearer’s daughter from regional VIC. She has experience across many agricultural supply chains all over Australia, including live export, extensive grazing in Western QLD, wool testing and meat research. Milly travels all over Australia to deliver professional development and supply chain capacity building workshops and now as the Program Manager for The Livestock Collective, Milly is keen to unite the livestock industry and ensure our voice is heard.
Cam Parker has had a wide and varied career. After actively contributing to policy setting bodies and representative groups as a producer in Victoria and in Queensland, Cam has shifted to a full-time policy career as Policy Manager at Primary Producers SA, working to bridge the gap between producers and those who influence and make decisions that affect Australian Agriculture. Cam has extensive experience and success in navigating complex matters on behalf of producers at a state and national level, working closely with governments, bureaucracies, and the National Farmers Federation.

If you can believe it, the final episode of Behind the Beef for 2022 is here and we are doing our yearly recap for Angus Australia to look back at the year that was and reflect on the achievements of Angus producers around Australia.
To do this, we will be chatting to the managers of the various units that make up Angus Australia, who will give some insight into the happenings that have affected their departments and in turn Angus producers over the last 12 months.

27. The beef supply chain and who fits into it with Fast Ed and Libbi Thompson
In today's episode we have been we speaking to two people positioned at two different parts of the supply chain.
We had the opportunity to speak to Libbi Thompson from Whyalla Beef and celebrity chef Fast Ed. Both of our guests are involved heavily in the beef supply chain and with Angus beef in their roles, however, ultimately are at two different ends of it – with Libbi working towards to top end of the chain, and Fast Ed further down in preparing the product and feeding the ultimate end – our consumers.
Libbi and Fast Ed shared with us the story about how they got to be where they are in the industry today and some background in the role they play within the beef supply chain.

24. Careers in Agriculture with Alexis Gandy & Lachlan Woods
The agricultural industry accounts for 55% of Australian land use, 12% of goods and services exports in 2020–21; 1.9% of value added gross domestic product and 2.5% of employment in 2020–21 (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2022). So suffice to say, as we all know, this industry is an important one.
One of the things about the agricultural industry is there is a plethora of avenues that those wanting a career in the industry and over the next couple of months, we will be snapshotting the careers of people in ag, asking them about their story and how they got to where they are and where they are going from here.
In this episode we will be chatting to two guests, Alexis Gandy and Lachlan Woods, who caught up with Angus Australia at the GenAngus Future Leaders Program. Both attendees of the program, Alexis and Lachlan sat down to speak to me about their journey to where they are in the industry, why they applied for a program like GenAngus for their careers, and what they took from a development opportunity like GenAngus.

It is estimated that at 60% of breeding activities occur during the Spring season, whether it be natural mating, AI or embryo transfer.

The development of the new generation of Angus HeiferSELECT is the result of eighteen months’ work with Angus Australia and collaborating partner, CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency.

18. A sit down with Peter Parnell
Dr Peter Parnell began his role as Chief Executive Officer at Angus Australia in May 2009 following an extensive career as a Research Scientist and Research Leader with the NSW Department of Primary Industries. In 2021 Dr Parnell quietly announced that he would be retiring from his position of CEO, concluding a near 40-year career serving the Australian cattle breeding industry, with particular interest in the application of genetic improvement technologies in both the registered cattle sector and wider beef industry.
On the eve of retirement, Peter has joined Behind the Beef for a chat where we cover his long career.

A few months ago we released our "A Week at Beef Australia" episode detailing the week that was at the excellent Beef Australia 2021. In that episode we gave a recap of the Angus Australia seminar hosted at Beef Australia, "The Angus Influence - From Performance to Profit".
As promised in that episode, episode 12 of Behind the Beef brings listeners the seminar itself, which is MC’ed by President and Board Chair Sam White and features a question and answer session hosted by Angus Australia Northern Development Officer Jen Peart, with producers Sam Crowther, Ben McGlynn and Robert Mackenzie.

An important area of development in Angus Australia is the Northern Development Program. The latest episode of the Behind the Beef Podcast features an interview with Northern Development Officer Jen Peart, where Jen gives an overview of her role within Angus Australia and the Northern Development Program, which is an important strategic project for Angus Australia in the development and implementation of a sustainable program with the overall aim to increase demand for Angus and Angus influenced cattle in the beef supply chain in northern Australia.

Behind the Beef is the brand-new Angus Australia podcast, giving a behind the scenes look across all facets of Angus beef cattle in Australia. Episode 1 takes a look at the Angus Youth Program and the recent Angus Youth National Roundup. The Angus Youth Roundup is a leading event four-day event for young beef enthusiasts aged 8-25. Focusing not only on the hands-on experience the event can provide, Roundup also includes a series of educational sessions and competition, designed to ensure each participant takes home a field of practical and informational experience. We caught up with some participants for a "Roundup" of what it's like to attend an Angus Youth event!
