The Russell Street Bombing
58 min

Inside the watch house across the street, which housed the cells of the nearby courthouse, constables Dave Yeoman and Angela Taylor had just fed the prisoners. It was their own lunch time now, and they could smell the fresh sandwiches emanating from the canteen across the road.

‘Whose turn is it to get the munchies?’ asked Angela. The 21 year old rising star was dux of her class at the academy; she had a bright smile, and this was her last shift before going on holidays.

‘I’ll toss you for it,’ Dave said with a smile, before he guessed correctly on the heads or tails and ordered a ham, cheese and tomato sandwich from Angela...

175. Milat Family Legacy: The Murder of David Auchterlonie
You could say the crap apple doesn't fall too far from the crap tree. In the case of Matthew Milat this couldn't be more true. Nephew of Backpacker Murderer, Ivan Milat, Matthew’s crimes were also brutal and disgusting. On November 20, 2010, Matthew lured David Auchterlonie to the Belanglo State Forest on his 17th birthday with the promise of beers and weed. There, with the help of friend Cohen Klein, they tortured, tormented and murdered David with a double-sided battle axe in the same forest where his Uncle murdered seven backpackers nearly 20 years earlier. This episode was recorded on the 10th Anniversary of the evening when Matthew murdered David Auchterlonie. Whoops we covered another cult. Coming for ya, Jo Thornely. Chantelle McDougall, her six-year-old daughter Leela, her partner Simon Kadwill, and their housemate Tony Popic went missing in July of 2007. Simon was the leader of an internet-based doomsday cult, who believed that through death, a chosen few would ascend to a new plane of reality and usher in the new Aquarian age of existence. So you know, normal stuff.  They told friends and family they were moving to Brazil, but their was no activity on their passports. Their disappearance left police stumped. Had they committed group suicide, or had they gone even further into isolation and completely segregated themselves from society? Our main sources this week were the coronial inquest completed in 2017. You know we love an inquest document! https://www.coronerscourt.wa.gov.au/_files/Felton,%20G;%20McDougall,%20C%20J%20and%20L;%20Popic,%20A%20K%20%20finding.pdf News articles about the case can be found here https://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-12-06/cult-leader-simon-kadwell-inquest-begins-into-missing-family/9205656 and here https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/real-life/news-life/cult-leader-simon-kadwell-inquest-hears-police-failed-to-investigate-report-of-dead-flesh-smell/news-story/b828be6ad139699e509c94ce62bc5292 The website for Simon’s “work” can be accessed via the Wayback Machine here https://web.archive.org/web/20071103141354/http://www.thenewcall.org/book_sdp.htm Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/murder-in-the-land-of-oz.   See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Decades Of Abuse: The Case Of The Tasmanian Nurse - Part Two
This is the second part of a two part episode. If you haven't listened to part one, listen here now. Launceston is one of Australia’s oldest cities. Just south of the city centre stands Launceston General Hospital, one of the main public hospitals in the state of Tasmania. The hospital treats a quarter of a million patients every year, and over 150 years has built trust within the local community.  The children’s ward is known as Ward 4K - filled with doctors and nurses doing their best to make a child’s stay as comfortable as possible.  But for more than 20 years, one nurse - a grandfatherly figure to so many - allegedly preyed on sick children.  It wasn’t until May last year, when a young woman referred to as Alice walked into Launceston police station, that everything would begin to change.  Her story, police would discover, was only the beginning.  This story is told by investigative journalist Camille Bianchi, the creator, host and reporter behind The Nurse podcast. The Nurse is about a former Launceston nurse named James 'Jim' Geoffrey Griffin who lived in a quiet town in Tasmania, and spent his life working with children. He also hid a dark secret.  CREDITS Guest: Camille Bianchi, creator and host of The Nurse podcast   Host: Jessie Stephens Audio Producer: Ian Camilleri  Executive Producer: Zoe Ferguson CONTACT US Tell us what you think of the show via email at truecrime@mamamia.com.au   Join our closed Facebook community to discuss this episode. The death of a neo-Nazi crime boss
Phillip Grant Wilson was a neo-Nazi and a killer. He recruited a gang and according to one police report, ''This group undertook intense physical fitness training for the purpose of establishing a physical and mental advantage over police, especially the Special Operations Group, against whom they fully expected to come up against at some time in the future.'' Detective Sergeant John Morrish of the armed robbery squad was one of the key investigators who worked on Wilson. Morrish was known to have an intense dislike of people who used guns to terrorise members of the public. He wasn't too fond of Nazis either. On August 4, 1987, the Iceman was shot dead in an ambush outside a South Yarra chiropractic clinic. The murder remains unsolved. Silvester has a recorded interview with Wilson, and we hear John Morrish’s recollections, including that he was initially considered a suspect in Wilson’s murder. Thanks for listening. 8. Under Pressure
It started with a phone call, sent by the whistle blower I had intended you to meet. I wanted to wrap series one of The Nurse with a neat bow, ending it the way it began. But life is messy and things aren't black and white, so this isn't the episode I intended to write. Maybe one day we will meet them, but for now, it is enough that they told me one summer night and triggered all that has happened since. Like a Commission of Inquiry... This episode marks the last of the 'weekly drops' for a couple of weeks, unless or until news breaks. See you then.
