The sovereignty of God is a truth that the sinfully autonomous human heart stubbornly resists. 19th century pastor J.C. Ryle says, -Of all the doctrines of the Bible, none is so offensive to human nature as the doctrine of God's sovereignty.- The sovereignty of God means that things go according to God's plan, not ours, and this is what we find the prophet Habakkuk struggling with in our text this morning. Last week we saw him ask, -God, when are you going to judge the unfaithfulness of your people,- and now that God has answered and said, -it's coming - I'm sending the Babylonians,- Habakkuk isn't so sure about that idea. The fact that God would use such a wicked nation to judge the unfaithfulness of the righteous troubled him deeply -- how could God use injustice to judge injustice, right-- But Habakkuk is about to learn that God rules over ALL things - including injustice and evil - and this is a lesson we need to learn likewise.
