#269: Wrestling with God
How can I trust that the bible is true? What do you do when you’re doubting your faith? What does it look like when your kids come to you with hard questions regarding religion? These are actual questions that came up in an especially candid episode released today. We didn’t know exactly where this conversation would take us and you may very well find parts of it that you disagree with. The great thing is, we are loved by a Father that welcomes the wrestling. The messiness is dialed up to about an 11 on this one! We are just three moms struggling (mostly) well through this hard and honest conversation. We invite you to listen through to the end and pray through the parts that you find uncomfortable, keeping in mind that we are clearly not pursuing perfection over here. Whoever Has Ears Should Listen - Thursday, Mark 4:1-12
Welcome back to We Wonder: Lent. Long ago, Jesus said to his friends, "Come: follow me," and during Lent we are following Jesus all the way through the gospel of Mark. Today we are beginning Mark chapter 4: Jesus tells a story about a very careless farmer. 📖 Read: Mark 4:1-12 (NIRV) ❔Wonder: Can I picture myself hearing this story along with the rest of the crowd at the Sea of Galilee? Where am I? Am I sitting on some sand, warm beneath me? Or maybe I am trying to get comfortable on a rocky patch as I strain to hear Jesus? Does the breeze help me hear his voice, as he is speaking from the boat? Can I feel it on my face? Can I see Jesus, the boat softly rocking on the waves? In Jesus' time, farmers scattered their seeds in their fields by hand. They took handfuls of seed, and sprinkled them in the the soil they had plowed. I wonder why this farmer isn't being careful about where he scatters his seed? Can I imagine the seeds landing on the smooth path? How could they ever get covered up and grow? Can I see the seeds that land in the rocky places? How could their roots ever grow deep and strong in such broken and hard soil? Have I ever seen a plant that is trying to grow up surrounded by thorny bushes or vines? How could it ever get enough sunlight and space to grow? Now, can I picture a field full of wheat, grown up from tiny seeds but now big enough to feed hundreds of people? I wonder why Jesus said, "whoever has ears should listen"? I have ears, but do I always really listen with them? Are there any words, or pictures, or moments from this story that I want to ask God about right now? Are there any words, or pictures, or moments from this story that I want to take with me and hold close? 🙏🏾 Pray: Jesus of Nazareth, son of God: thank you that we have a book filled with your words and deed. Give us the wisdom and understanding that comes from your Holy Spirit, so that we can know you better and follow you all the days of our lives. In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen. 💌 Keep in touch! The Big Boo Cast, Episode 224
It seems like it's been forever since we last said these words, but college baseball season is here! On this episode we talk about opening weekend for the Aggies and the Bulldogs, and we also discuss our weekend outings to the State / Alabama women's basketball game (me) and the San Antonio rodeo (Mel). Plus, Mel shares some ways we can all jump in and help Texans who are recovering from last week's ice storm. AND. This week we get to spend some time talking with author Elizabeth Passarella. I mentioned her new book, Good Apple, on the podcast a few weeks ago (you may remember that I loved it), and Melanie and I were so excited to get to visit with her. You'll hear part of the conversation on this episode - the rest a few weeks down the road - and you are going to love her. Melanie and I had both talked to her for about three minutes when we realized that it felt like we've known her forever. Hope y'all enjoy! - Our Amazon Shop ( - Become a Patron! Understanding Boys Better :: David Thomas [Ep 315]
Understanding the emotions of boys is a challenge no matter the age. Anxiety that presents as anger or distraction. Depression shows up as low-grade irritability. David Thomas returns to the show to answer listener questions about all things boy. David is a family therapist and director at DayStar Counseling Center in Nashville. He has lots of experience counseling families and children and has a set of twin boys himself. We talk about teaching our sons about emotional language, going to counseling, helping sibling relationships, and managing boy energy levels. “I think we need to be clear with boys. I think it's always helpful to use concrete language with them. When we're concise, clear, and concrete, those are kind of three rules of thumb, we can consistently be adopting. The mistake that I think we can make is we kind of soft pedal and dance around things.” If you are a parent of boys, this is an episode for you! Watch for a bonus episode coming out later this week too.
