Big Kids: Madeleine West: To Conceive Or Not To Conceive?
Welcome to This Glorious Mess Big Kids. A twice-weekly look at parenting as it really is. Confusing, exhausting, inspiring, funny, and full of surprises. So many surprises. This week Holly and Andrew are asking the hard questions ... What advice would you tell a friend who was trying to decide whether or not to have kids?  Madeleine West, actor, author and activist has reflected a lot on this question. Between her roles on TV, starring in shows like Underbelly, Playing for Keeps and Neighbours and having six kids, Madeleine has learnt a lot about when life doesn't go to script. So what would Madeleine tell her past self? And does she wish things were different? Plus, some group therapy for a listener who is having some party planning anxiety!  LINKS  Madeleine's junior fiction series, Lily D V.A.P is available now. Madeleine's non-fiction work, Six Under Eightis also out now!  CREDITS Hosts:Holly Wainwright & Andrew Daddo Guests: Madeleine West  Producer: Elissa Ratliff & Mikayla Floriano CONTACT US Send your parenting dilemmas to tgm@mamamia.com.au Looking for a community of like-minded parents? A very Melania Christmas
It’s the final year of the Trump administration living large at the White House, which also means it’s the final year of Melania doing the White House Christmas decorations. Thanks to a bit of leaked audio recorded by a former BFF of Melania, we know she doesn’t “give a f*** about Christmas stuff and decorating. But I need to do it right?”, yes, yes you do Melania. Hence she’s no doubt been showing off her lack of f***s by decking the halls with a variety of weird options, from a forest of 40 blood red Christmas trees, that looked like they’d been the victim of a Carrie style prom night prank, to hallways lined with dead branches, all painted stark white, then shoved into giant white pot plants. So for her final effort, Em was kind of hoping Melania would go for more of a gothic, emo expression with her festive festooning, just as her final fuck you to Americans, sadly she’s gone very traditional with her “America the beautiful” theming. Em and Michael also need to chat about Tara Reid approaching Nicole Kidman via the Instagram comments section on a post by our original BMX Bandit. Seems Tara is on the hustle for actors to appear in a new film she’s producing that revolves around drugging the attendees of a kids party with magic mushrooms, as you do. Rather than bother with agents, and her people talking to their people, Tara seems to have figured, pffft as if, I’m just gonna hit up Nicole Kidman in the comments section of that picture she just casually posted on the ‘gram. At the time of recording, we were still unsure if Nicole had responded yet, Tara and the rest of us, will probably be waiting for a very long time on that reply. Convo’s around Nicole Kidman naturally usher in discussions about whether it is okay or not, to be commenting on Nicole’s face. Naturally, Em would usually say “NO we just don’t comment on the way a woman looks” but she also found Nicole's face was actually distracting at times whilst watching her star in ‘The Undoing’. So prepare yourself for some yuletide yawning, a what the actual what moment of Tara Reid realness, and a tentative talk about how to freeze a face for all eternity, so standard Emsolation action really. The Bling Ring
In 2009, six celebrity-obsessed teenagers decided that the best way to live like their idols was to, well, steal their stuff. These kids used Google, TMZ, Facebook and good ol' Hollywood Star Maps to figure out where celebs lived and when exactly when they weren't at home. Then they'd break into their (usually unlocked) mansions and steal piles of their stuff. They ransacked the homes of Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Rachel Bilson, Orlando Bloom and more. By the time they were caught, they had $3million worth of stuff, and the crazy thing? Most of the celebrities hadn't even noticed anything was missing. It’s a big week for trans awareness, with actor Elliot Page coming out and highlighting the realities of many others in the trans community. A great piece in the Washington Post on how COVID has changed arts criticism has us thinking more broadly about the ways we’re shifting for good, including in live gig accessibility. It’s quite a time for butts in fashion too, and of course we have many thoughts. Cher has rescued an elephant, and another monolith has popped up; Myf has the breaking news on both. Big Sister Hotline: Episode 41, Feat. JILL STARK
This week, I’m joined by my good friend JILL STARK to talk about anxiety, lockdown and some of the tools we can use to ground us when we’re feeling fizzy brained. Jill’s first book, “High Sobriety” was about the year she spent sober. She has since become sober again, and we talk about what this means for a person’s mental health and some of the emotional challenges that come with committing to and maintaining sobriety. It gave me a lot to think about in terms of my own relationship to alcohol, and I know it will resonate strongly with listeners! From little sisters, we answer questions about how to get back into dating without losing yourself in a prospective partner; what to do when the person you’ve been developing intimacy with decides to soft ghost you and insist it’s only ‘casual’; and how to react when a close friend becomes ‘the other woman’.
