355 - James Acaster Returns, Again! (Part 1)
The whole of this two hour conversation is available to everyone over parts one and two, but members of the Insiders Club were also treated to a special Q&A over Zoom, asking James their questions in person.  That audio is now available on the Insiders private podcast, and it was so much fun we’re going to do more of them with other comics!  For your future invitations to those, as well as all the extra content from every episode that has it, join now at www.comedianscomedian.com/insiders And now… To celebrate the forthcoming self-release via Dice.fm of his new special “Cold Lasagne Hate Myself 1999”, James returns to the podcast for two hours of insight across two episodes!  We explore the rawness of this new special, talk about his new “cool guy” costume, and discuss the pros and cons of having a right royal go at the audience.  We learn about his rejection of social media, the distance between his persona and his real self, and how in the past he’s forfeited his sanity in order not to rock the boat… “Cold Lasagne Hate Myself 1999” streams once at 8pm on 17th Dec wherever you are in the world (fancy!) and you can get access here: https://dice.fm/artist/james-acaster-bbx6o You cannot follow James Acaster on social media.   Everything Stu's up to: The Infinite Sofa chat show is now available as a solution to remote-working office parties over the festive period and beyond! The Family Liaison
After a sudden and violent death, the Metropolitan Police will dispatch a member of their ‘Family Liaison' team to the deceased person’s relatives, to ensure their needs are met.  But this wasn’t always the case... As retired officer Tom Simmons explains to Olly in this episode, the role of the ‘family liaison’ was only professionalised in the 90s, after the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry - a process in which he played a part. Before then, shocked and grieving family members were frequently dealt with by detectives with no formal training in the psychological, religious and practical requirements of victims - and who might make no secret of the fact that, as family members, they too might be suspects in a murder… Content warning: this month’s middle feature includes references to murder, terrorism and child sexual abuse, and descriptions of dead bodies.  ------- Elsewhere, in this month’s Zeitgeist, Ollie Peart explores the trend for ‘menicures’. Can the lady behind Instagram’s ‘Boys In Polish’ help him become Britain’s Next Top Male Nail Artist? Get the look: if you want to try Ollie’s designs for yourself, download his factsheet for the ‘perfect’ menicure HERE: modernmann.co.uk/s/OlliesNailsEmporium.pdf Feeling lonely this Christmas? Does participating in sexting automatically open the door for more, um, intimate video content? How can one set up boundaries of consent and respect on Tinder? And what’s the best way to communicate them, with one hand down your pants?  Alix gives all the answers, with the help of blogger and pole dancer @bloggeronpole. 6.04: Flooded
As the saying goes, you should really fix that small leak before all your pipes burst and you're suddenly standing knee-deep in water, playing kitten poker, and using a copper pipe to kill a bank demon — all while three ridiculous white men try to take over your town using their complete lack of wit and a moderate heaping of whimsy. It's Season Goddamn 6 Episode Goddamn 4: Flooded. PAY THE FUCKING SLAYER. WHAT THE FUCK. +++ LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT  We acknowledge that we and our team are occupying unceded and stolen lands and territories.  Kristin occupies the Lenape territories of the Esopus Lenape Peoples. Jenny occupies the Wabanahkik territory of the Abenaki and Pennacook Peoples. Alba occupies Tiohtià:ke of the Kanien’kehá:ka Nation. Mack, LaToya, and John Mark occupy the lands of the Kizh Peoples. Land acknowledgements exist to celebrate the indigenous peoples who are the rightful guardians of the land or territory that we as colonizers are inhabiting. A Land acknowledgement also encourages non-indigenous people to recognize that they are on stolen and unceded indigenous land and to directly engage with that knowledge in meaningful and impactful ways.  Learn more on land acknowledgements here: LAND REPARATIONS & INDIGENOUS SOLIDARITY TOOLKIT Learn what Indigenous Lands You Occupy 'I regret it': Hayden King on writing Ryerson University's territorial acknowledgement CELEBRATION + SPOTLIGHT ON INDIGENOUS WORK AND PEOPLES Listen to Metis In Space: http://www.metisinspace.com/ Educational + Activist Accounts  @decolonizemyself @decolonizethisplace @Indigenouspeoplesmovement @indigenousrising @lilnativeboy @wetsuweten_checkpoint Artists  @melaw_nakehko @notoriouscree @project562 @strikingstick #terigreeves @wendyredstar Authors David Treuer @jakeskeets Joy Harjo @kalimaja @shondabuchanan @tiffanymidge Businesses @ataumbimetals @byellowtail @cheekbonebeauty @eighthgeneration @shenative @tpmocs @trickstercompany +++ LOCATE YOUR HOSTS UPON THE INTERNET Jenny Owen Youngs: @jennyowenyoungs; jennyowenyoungs.com Kristin Russo: @kristinnoeline; kristinnoeline.com Buffering the Vampire Slayer: @bufferingcast on twitter, facebook, and instagram Learn more about our team at bufferingthevampireslayer.com/our-team SPECIAL GUEST Gaby Dunn: @gabyroad; gabydunn.com/ +++ Our Anti-Racism Library: https://www.bufferingthevampireslayer.com/antiracist-library Our episode on Pangs: https://radiopublic.com/buffering-the-vampire-slayer-a-b-6nN5z1/s1!0cce2 +++ Produced by: Alba Daza, Kristin Russo, and Jenny Owen Youngs Edited by: John Mark Nelson & Kristin Russo +++ JOIN OUR PATREON FAMILY!! Closing the Loop on China's Mystery Seeds
What ever happened with those mysterious seeds that were showing up in U.S. mailboxes? * 00:33 - Michigan Department of Agriculture tweet * 03:10 - USDA answers frequently asked questions about the mystery seeds, including “What should I do if I already planted the seeds?” * 02:30 - Facebook post from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development * 03:52 - Invasive species are no joke!!!! * 04:50 - As of this writing, Snopes said there was no motive determined for the seed shipments: Are Americans Receiving Unsolicited Mailings of Seeds from China? (Snopes) * 09:32 - USDA still hasn’t found anything to cause major concern, but it has now identified more species and some viruses. This is an updated comment as of Nov. 18: “Altogether, we have identified approximately 460 taxa of seeds. We have detected 2 quarantine insect pests using x-ray and 28 Federal Noxious weeds based on identifications by APHIS botanists. We have also identified 6 quarantine significant viruses or viroids using molecular testing.” Also, here are some photos of U.S.D.A. investigating the seeds with microscopes. * 14:29 - Jason Koebler and Emanuel Maiberg of Motherboard. The last story Underunderstood collaborated on with Motherboard was this one. * 15:05 - Hundreds of Americans Planted 'Chinese Mystery Seeds' (Motherboard) * 19:16 - Zack Franklin in action * 22:44 - Amazon explains fulfilled by Amazon and a little bit about fulfilled by merchant. * 30:55 - ”The mysterious seed is back! Shenzhen cross-border seller actually sends parcels here” (forum post) * 31:31 - Moss’s website for Amazon sellers and Moss on Zhihu. * 34:07 - Honest Buyers Club on Facebook is an example of one of these groups. Once you get involved, you’ll start to get one-on-one messages from sellers. To clarify, I (Adrianne) have never actually ordered anything, I just lurk and try to harass people into doing an interview (100% failure rate). I’m definitely not endorsing giving your address out to strangers on the internet, but I think these guys are mostly legit. So, maybe you could give them, like, a PO box? * 36:06 - ”Evaluation blacklist” — a crowdsourced list of people who accept free gifts without providing the requisite review
