Big Sister Hotline: Episode 36, Feat. ALYSSA HO
1 hr 7 min

Hello everyone! Apologies for no episode last week - I took a much needed break. But we're back this week with the very excellent ALYSSA HO, who you may know from calling out beauty influencers online over their cultural appropriation via the "fox eye trend". Alyssa and I talk about this and much more in this illuminating episode, and it's a must listen for anyone who cares about how to be a good ally while consuming fashion and beauty trends.

From little sisters, we answer questions about evolving beyond your relationship, how to break up with kindness and compassion and what to do when you realise a man has been using the language of feminism to gaslight you.

The Men Who Don't Know How To Have Sex
The sexual assault trial against former rugby league star Jarryd Hayne and the rape trial against Jack De Belin are back in the spotlight as their court cases continue. While their guilt is for a judge to decide, there are some undisputed details emerging from these cases that are worth a closer look. Off the back of a powerful article by Jessie, the Outlouders discuss the porn pandemic and where it goes wrong for these men and so many sports stars like them. Plus, we’re talking about The Crown again. But this time, not about royalty. This season of the show features a woman almost as famous as Princess Diana but much less adored - Margaret Thatcher.  And, are women over forty making mistakes with make-up? A Mamamia piece that went viral over the weekend says yes.  THE END BITS Recommendations: Be an influencer in your own home with a ring light Mia is recommending for Christmas Zoom calls. #150: Music Awards, Meghan Markle, Toast
It’s been a big week for music statues, with the ARIA Awards going down, and the Grammy nominations going up. Diversity on both fronts is on the rise, but The Weeknd ain’t happy. A great read on a new generation’s viewing of Diana’s “princess story” has us also reflecting on the shifting stories around cultural institutions, while an op-ed penned by The Duchess of Sussex shows she continues to do things her way. It’s our 150th episode too, so a good chance to introduce a new segment: Things We Don’t Understand. The Day Shanna Realised She Was An Alcoholic
What's the difference between a party girl and an alcoholic? For today's guest, it was about 20 years, a series of traumas, and a large dose of denial. Shanna Whan finally realised she was in serious trouble when she 'came to' in the Emergency Department after being found crumpled and bleeding at the bottom of a flight of stairs.  You see for a long time, like many ''high-functioning'' alcoholics, Shan convinced herself it wasn't a serious problem because she was a successful business woman by day, and didn't drink until ''after five'' ....  Growing up in rural Australia, heavy drinking was a culturally ingrained and glorified rite of passage she embraced wholeheartedly .. to try and fit in. But it wasn’t until her rock bottom in early 2015 that she knew she had to reach out and ask for help and take action, or die young. Fast forward six years, 15,000 volunteer hours, starting over from scratch, endless failures, knockbacks, and opposition - and now Shanna is the founder and CEO of a national charity called Sober In The Country.  This is her story... THE END BITS: Check out Sober In The Country here - https://www.soberinthecountry.org/. The Jenny Jones talk show shooting
In 1995, daytime talk shows like Jerry Springer and Jenny Jones were at the height of their popularity thanks to using a tactic called ‘ambush television’ - getting guests on stage and shocking or embarrassing them for entertainment. There were episodes like ‘Mom, I’ve been sleeping with your boyfriend’ or ‘Remember our one night stand? WELL THIS IS YOUR BABY!’  One episode of Jenny Jones at the time was called ‘Guess your secret crush!’ and in it, a man called Scott Amedure admitted to his friend Jonathan Schmitz that he had a crush on him. Three days later, Scott was dead. Jonathan had murdered him, and he blamed The Jenny Jones Show. We've Become Princess Diana Conspiracy Theorists
Hello muffins and welcome to a brand spanking new AWD episode. This week, we pay a quick homage to 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy' on its 10 year anniversary, and as Complex crowns it the album of the decade. In short: We miss the old Kanye. Listeners share their own stories of embarrassing stories of love-gone-wrong in your early 20s. Ivanka Trump's former bestie pulled a Natalie and penned a bitchy essay for Vanity Fair - but why do so many (white) women bristle against fully condemning Ivanka? Lena Dunham wrote an essay for Harper's about her struggles with IVF - leading to a rambling discussion from us about the inescapable questions that surround motherhood, work and fertility, and how new technology often leads to more shame and self-hatred for women. Then, it's onto the only topic we ever want to talk about: Princess Diana. The BBC have opened an investigation into whether or not her 1995 Panorama interview was obtained unethically - while a new five-part series 'You're Wrong About' investigates the myths and legends surrounding Princess Di's death. A documentary directed by Lily Allen's Dad (randomly) has turned us into conspiracy theorists - so what's the truth? And why can't we stop talking about it, 20+ years later?  As always, rate, review and subscribe - and we'll see you Saturday. ❤️ Disclaimer: Izzy doesn't really think the royals killed Princess Diana. Please don't @ her. Michael talks smack about Carols in the domain.
While we’ve been serving lockdown realness from our lounge rooms, our lady and saviour Dolly Parton has been busy. Not only has she used a stack of her millions to help fund the development of a Covid vaccine, she’s also just casually composed, co-produced and performed in a Christmas movie musical. So naturally Em and Michael will be spending a large portion of this episode deep diving into the seasonal wonder that is the Netflix movie ‘Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square’. To start we’ll need to talk about the outfits, we also need to talk about how Dolly is a VERY sparkly, glamourous, homeless woman, but...she’s Dolly, so as if she isn’t going to be Dolly. Christine Baranski is amazing as Lady Scrooge, but we need to state for the podcast record that Em is quoted as describing it as “really bad, it’s bad, but it’s so bad, it’s good, it really is in that realm”. Em and Michael’s excitement about Mariah Carey’s upcoming Christmas special needs to be reflected too. Speaking of being in Santa season, Michael feels that everyone’s been very eager to put up their Christmas decorations this year, something Em helped confirm when she dropped her “Jason Momoa in a Sparkly Leotard” Christmas extravaganza the previous week. There’s also Rhonda Burchmore being omitted from performing at Carols by Candlelight and how much they loved that she publicly called them out about the snub. Then Michael takes a moment to talk a lot of smack about Carols in the Domain, because he feels that Carols by Candlelight is vastly superior. So secure the drip guard around the base of that lit candle, grab a bag of festively tainted popcorn, and settle in for all that tea to be spilt. Then we talk about the brand new Shawn Mendes documentary that left Em feeling largely underwhelmed, her take away being “he’s clearly a young man who’s just terrified all the time”. Sadly it wasn’t a great rockumentary, especially when you compare it to the benchmark that Madonna set when she released her groundbreaking ‘Truth or Dare’/’In Bed with Madonna’ doco. To see us out Em has an announcement about how Drake should absolutely never play Barack Obama, so secure those headphones of yours over your listen holes or hit the volume on your speakers and get some Emsolation happening.   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
