Chris Boardman, cyclist
Chris Boardman is an Olympic cyclist, businessman and the Cycling and Walking Commissioner for Greater Manchester. Both his parents were keen competitive amateur cyclists and they backed Chris as he gradually became interested in the sport as a teenager. He left school at 16, and trained as a carpenter to fund his cycling, and his love of making things has never left him. He met his wife Sally when they were teenagers and she supported him when he took time off work to train and compete. He became a household name in 1992 at the Olympics in Barcelona, as the first British cyclist to win a gold medal in 72 years. He moved on to road racing and wore the yellow jersey in the Tour de France on three occasions. After retiring from racing, he was instrumental in the success of Team GB cycling at subsequent Olympics, with his focus on how improvements could be made in all aspects of design. He also launched his own range of bicycles catering for elite and everyday cyclists, and as Greater Manchester's Cycling and Walking commissioner, he is finding ways to help people leave their cars at home. 351- Laurie Kilmartin
Laurie Kilmartin can make anything funny; from her superb album “45 Jokes About My Dead Dad”, a bulletproof club-fresh comedy special which doesn’t tarry with emotion, to live-tweeting the recent tragic loss of her mother to Covid-19. We learn how she found humour by turns lacerating and deeply moving, even in that awful situation. We also talk about her work as a monologue writer for Conan O’Brien, and the rhythm of pitching jokes personally and then collaborating in the last hour before showtime; how to wield disdain effectively; and why she doesn’t believe comics like to make people happy. Taron Egerton • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #350
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! What better way to follow last episode’s acting aceness than with another UK treasure, yes indeed Distraction Pieces famsquad it is the brilliant TARON EGERTON! As with so many of these episodes featuring the UK acting crew, there is an over-riding spiritual link by way of Stephen Graham, so props must be given to him first off! This one feels like another ‘long time coming’ episode, where it was just a matter of time and arrangements to lock it in. Naturally there’s lockdown talk up top, which is always fascinating as we all want to know how it’s been affecting each other - Taron’s found himself in Wales, which brings us to his upbringing (including Liverpool), and from then on you can expect some good talk on social media, RADA and family whip-rounds for auditions, early days (not THAT long ago!) on Kingsman, lessons learned through each film, voice acting vs acting-acting, Matthew Vaughn, Dexter Fletcher, Tom Hardy, his own filmography (including Eddie The Eagle and Rocketman to name a couple), and tons more. Uplifting and inspirational - you shall enjoy! #156 Salvation & Apocalypse In The Metamodern World (with Seth Abramson)
This week’s guest on Under The Skin is the rather incredible meta modern journalist and political analyst Seth Ambramson! Seth is an American professor, attorney, author, and political columnist. His teaching areas include digital journalism, post-internet cultural theory, post-internet writing, and legal advocacy. He has written several books including Proof of Corruption: Bribery, Impeachment, and Pandemic in the Age of Trump (2020) and Proof of Conspiracy: How Trump's International Collusion Is Threatening American Democracy (2019).  We we drill down into why the political landscape is the way it is, if Donald Trump is the problem or actually just a symptom and how postmodernism created a culture of hopelessness! Seth proposes the benefits of the metamodernist approach and explains how the most rebellious amongst us aren’t those reliving the punk attitudes of the 70s but the people who are putting themselves out there, seemingly uncool and and being mocked for their efforts to create change. Enjoy! MORE INFO Seth’s new book Proof of Corruption is available now: https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250273000 Proof of Corruption concludes a series that includes 2018's Proof of Collusion and 2019's Proof of Conspiracy. #TSP136 - Nicole Kidman
Hiyer Two Shot Pod pals. Hope you're all keeping well. We're back with another episode and this week we're talking to none other than the completely legendary Nicole Kidman! Craig dialled in to New South Wales to have a TSP chin wag with Nicole and they really got into it. They talk about her first forays into the acting world at the tender age of 14, her love of theatre and the trepidation she felt before treading the boards in the West End, traveling for work with her kids and close ones, the importance of drama school knowledge you were convinced you'd never need and loads, loads more. Nicole has done it all. From BMX Bandits (which Craig does bring up) to Batman, from To Die For to Moulin Rouge, she's one the greats of our time. The conversation starts with a bit of discussion about Nicole's most recent HBO project The Undoing which will be available on Sky Atlantic & NOW TV from 26 October. Craig is certainly on the edge of his seat to see the final episode. Nicole is a fabulous guest and we're sure you'll enjoy listening this, episode 136 of the Two Shot Podcast. Get in touch... Alison Lapper (MBE)
Alison Lapper is a celebrated artist, best known for being the subject of a very famous piece of art, a Marc Quinn sculpture which caused uproar at the time depicting her ‘limbless body’, no arms and very short legs, heavily pregnant with her son Parys. The statute rested on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar square and proved quite the subversive neighbour to the other male war heroes depicted on the other plinths. Parys was born able bodied and healthy and his arrival was the beginning of nearly two decades of Alison having to prove herself capable as a Mother to the social services and to the general public. In the Summer of 2019, Parys died at the age of 19 following struggles with mental health and addiction.  In this raw conversation with Annie, she talks about her mother’s rejection of her as a baby, her childhood in care and the challenges she has faced in society as a disabled person and mother. Alison speaks about her unique bond with Parys and the issues surrounding his death, including the changes that she thinks we need to help those living with disabilities or mental health illnesses. Alison is remarkable with a strength of will, humour and determined spirit like no other.  If you would like to find out more about Alison you can go to: Website: www.alilapper.com Instagram: alison_lapper_mbe Facebook: Ali Lapper Alison is a full member of the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists, that would be fantastic, website link - mfpa.uk Warning: This episode discusses mental illness including depression and addiction, drug misuse and has references to suicide.
