Our special guest today is John Maceri, the chief executive officer of The People Concern, a leading Los Angeles based organization that serves the homeless community and those experiencing poverty, mental and physical illness, abuse, and addiction. Today’s discussion will focus on permanent supportive housing and some of the creative methods that The People Concern and their partners have used to achieve significant solutions.
There are hundreds of millions of dollars being spent each year in moving people in and out of the system. While there is a pressing need to build new housing, it costs far less than “managing” the existing people and services that care for homeless communities. It’s simply an illusion that costs are going to be more to provide permanent supportive housing. The pandemic has laid bare lots of structural inequities and problems in our systems, which need to be addressed—but there are also creative solutions. Part of the American Dream should include the ability to live in a community where financial pressure does not overly stress the population from year to year.
