Until then, destiny entails massaging Luca’s ego into self-destruction, surrounding dog units with man units, sharing a face with Luc, realizing Tsai is an ugly deadbeat dad, getting our life together, caring about breeding, designating ambush positions, winning a war battle way too early, thirsting for blood, creating three tactical units, preparing our eyes for darkness, violently arrowing dudes to death, beating the holiest of shit out of Luca, 1v1’ing Luca No Items Firefly Tree, giving a world class villain death speech, and getting married again. The thirst that scorched my flesh is disappearing.

Suikoden II E10: Succession of Jowy Dots [Jowston Hilltop Conference]

While you find proof of yours, we’re running up that hilltop, failing facial recognition, belly bumping a lady, suffering surly knights, channeling Elden Ring’s intro narrator, testing the Jowston State Agreement, calling a false flag, reading into the dots, bloodying their nose a little, turning Gilbert’s coat and also sometimes killing Gilbert, furthering Jowy’s disillusionment, plotting an escape, lying to Pilika, cutting in with Suikoden 1 lore, asking Anabelle why she fights, corrupting a save file, and babysitting an orphan. Let us pursue another dumb idea that turned into a good idea.
As we've casually mentioned for the past few months, we've been working on a new (occasional) show, GOD BLESS THE RING, an exploration of the history, lore, and gameplay of classic beat 'em ups and fighting games. We brought in a third host (thanks, Mark) and try to put a twist on our format.
Fighting games and beat 'em ups aren't really ripe for a deep, critical analysis in the traditional sense, but Eric applied weird, creative fiction to each encounter as we talked through the game.
This is GOD BLESS THE RING – Retrograde Amnesia’s exploration of the history, lore, and gameplay mechanics of classic beat ‘em ups and fighting games. In our first installment, we're hitting up Double Dragon and Double Dragon II: The Revenge. We are joined by the purveyor hot sounds himself, Mark.

We live in a new room. It has a playlist of one song. It never stops. We're also talking about Kislev's strength-based merit system, meeting a new candidate for Best Doctor, receiving advice from a toilet nun, interpreting Kislev's iconography, sending Rico's brain to hell, shutting Hammer up, jumping on a moving train without committing suicide, and being amused by Fei's resolve to "just go wild." Xenogears 13: Grahf's Spreadsheet [Brave Battlers + The Sewers]
It's episode 13, the best number. We begin with an outrageous Blue Guy/Red Guy Digital Thunderdome sequence before moving onto the Battle Arena and discovering someone tried to make a fighting game in the middle of this role-playing game. We also find Hammer The Supplier in our modern society, get body shamed by French cooks on a planet that doesn't have France, question whether Rico seeks justice or recruitment, stomp out grotesque monsters in the sewer, experiment with vertical platforming, and discuss the biological and social nature of Solarian sympathy. Memory cubes exist in Xenogears' world but the real life versions of save points are apologies.

Hey. We're in Nortune now, which means everything is different until it becomes the same again. Enigmatic forces of questionable benefit are everywhere. Prison initiation rituals are unavoidable. There are suspect choices on diversity and representation. Fei finally sleeps a lot. It is time for Episode Nine. After coming to Margie's rescue, Bart faces off against Ramsus. Then Fei comes to help! Then they run into Elly! Then Margie's stuffed animal is a real animal! We learn the necessity of deathblow combos, explore the lack of stride animations in non-essential characters, and also develop an utter mistrust of Citan.
