For the first time in we're honestly not sure how long, neither Tim nor Matt are on this one. Come one, come all - witness the PixelCast crew run wild, free in the meadows like brilliant stallions... or feral rabbits. You listen and decide! We left Steve in charge, so you can all be blameful towards him, if you so desire. Or perhaps to Ken and / or Rob, who were also kind enough to show up. Naturally, with the gate left open and the fence in a bit of a wobbly state anyway, board games managed to creep into this one. It's all about stuff being physical, see? The crew does manage to talk about some videogames, too, though - some pretty decent ones even. Anyone up for a manly soap opera with samurai swords?

Good news! Nothing went wrong in post this time! Lessons have been learned about auto-recovery versus manual saving, and this episode should be clean and good to go for your ears! Tim’s back in charge, and he’s managed to drag Ken and Rob along for the ride. They’ve got a pretty decent slate of games to discuss this episode, too. Even the bad one! It feels like one disappointment per fortnight has been a bit of a theme for this year so far…
Perhaps that recurrence is thematically appropriate, though, as this is the episode where we ask the question: have roguelikes and time-loop games gotten legitimately interesting? The answer may surprise you. Or it may not. But whatever it may do, if you haven’t already, you should definitely play The Forgotten City.

We must say, after predicting that it would happen just after recording, it was very nice of Sony to offer up a State of Play just beforehand instead. This was always going to be the PlayStation episode, following on from out XBox and Switch ones, so having something direct and on hand to talk about was somewhat appreciated. We say somewhat because, well... it becomes apparent in this episode that Sony's first offering for the year left us feeling a little underwhelmed. And just who is 'us' this time around? We have our first cast of the three stalwarts (Hewso, Ken and Tim) for the year that is 2023! Fortunately, at least two of them have been playing games; and one of them is even what you might call a new release!

Ah, to be free of milestones. I mean, they’re fun and all, but sometimes it’s nice to just sit down on a show that has an ordinary number, and 102 fits that particular bill. Tim’s back in charge, trouble-free and firing off magic spells that don’t have much to do with anything all over the place. Or maybe he’s just recently finished playing through Forspoken and still isn’t entirely sure what he makes of it all. Fortunately, Hewso is there to keep him in check as the pair turn from Microsoft and instead look at what we may or may not see from Nintendo in the year ahead. We just had a pretty meaty direct to delve into, but the lads are out there speculating on some other stuff, too (spoiler: neither of them expects any meaningful new hardware in 2023).

We did it! We lived through everything! Our little show is now over a century old! The charity stream is done, dusted and bathing in a pleasant glow of success! Oh, and somehow Hewso managed to un-shatter himself after all of this in order to sit down and bring a show together while Tim was off gallivanting around Osaka looking at pretty lights or something. Fortunately, he wasn't alone. In fact, we managed a full team to back him up: Nick and Shaun have his back. Mercifully for everyone, the games have started to come out again! Will 2023 be the best year for games since 2017? Well, if you listen you... probably won't find out. But you might find out if that new Once Piece game is any good, so there's that?

New year, new milestone. We were sitting pretty at ninety-nine episodes over that there year-end break, but none of us get to rest forever, and so we're back in 2023 with episode one hundred coming in hot, straight off the bat. Just think, if we survive for ten times as long as we have already, we're going to have a formatting issue because we've always used three digits in our labeling.
Tim is, appropriately, hosting this one, with Hewso, Rob and Steve helping to make up for the absence of Ken. The focus? Our personal favourite games from the past year. Everybody got to shout out their top to proper 2022 releases, with a third slot to accommodate anything we liked that might not normally qualify. Said category may possible have been willed into existence so that Tim could plead with everyone to play The Artful Escape again.

Can you smell the gingerbread in the air? No? It's just me? Never mind, then. It is that time of year, though; Christmas decorations have been up in store windows for about a month now, which means that it's finally sensible that they actually are there. This marks our final episode of the year before the PixelCast goes all in on evil, no-punches-held Christmas obsession. So it would make sense that, as with this time back in in 2021, we take a look back at the year that was 2022. Tim, Ken and Steve are in charge of driving this one, and worry not - they've been playing some games, too. Not nearly enough games, mind. If there's one thing that really stood out to them at the end of all this, it was that 2022 was a year that saw the release of an absolute slew of quality games (the Switch, in particular, absolutely killed it), but also felt a bit lifeless and disappointing. The reason? It could be the zeitgeist; or it could also just be that we've been relatively spoiled this past decade.

The core crew is back together. Hewso is back from a fantastic, food-fueled trip to Ken (who is also present)'s homeland, and Tim is sneaking his voice is before, ironically, buggering off to Australia for a week and change. It's the sort of disorder that used to be defined as normal, and as such, it's kind of cozy and comforting to be back on this metaphorical couch.
Speaking of couches - this episode has it shared of them. We're talking about cool, local multiplayer experiences of past and present. It turns out that there is a huge variety out there and that the best games for shared experiences aren't always obvious. The key word there being 'obvious', mind. There are plenty of times where Worms, Halo or Street Fighter is clearly going to be a winner with whoever else is in your living room.

And yes, we know that plague does not equal virus, but to make this awkward word selection work, Tim has been digging into a certain game that is chock-full of vermin. Can has been keeping it cool with some cute little cult sheep. Also, we chat about handheld games and just what it is, exactly, that makes for a game that works in more travel-friendly settings. You will be shocked to learn that the new Plague Tale really doesn't suit the bill and that you maybe shouldn't be buying that there cloud version unless you really have no recourse.

One episode we’re swamped and have to hack and trim when deciding what the cover, the next we’re looking between the dust bunnies on the floor. The classic crew is back: Hewso, Ken and Tim headline this one. Unsurprisingly, it's all about that there Gamescom thing that's been happening over in Germany. Spoiler, of sorts: we thought that they actually did a pretty good job this year. Not that any of us were actually there, mind. Tim attended once, back when it was still held in Leipzig, and says that covering it in person is something of a living hell (this may or may not have a lot to do with him being forced to sleep on a bench near the airport). Back to normal! We have three members (Tim, Steve and Rob) and three fairly up-to-date games to talk about. We say fairly because, well, a couple of weeks has become a long time in video games. Shit's crazy now - when we were still floppy-haired youngsters, news cycles were monthly and things like news and reviews were printed on this strange substance called paper. We also mostly had bugger-all to play back then. Sure, there were still plenty of games out there on those consoles that plugged into fat, blockish TVs, but forty bucks for one title was a legit good price once upon a time, and mostly we got two or three games per year. As such, a game had to really stink not to get played a lot. Do we still make time to revisit favourites from a year or two ago today, though? Well... maybe. At least, that's what we end up discussing for the bulk of this episode.

It would be nice if the potholes in the road were to start to fill in soon. Player 2 members are just falling like (very handsome and/or beautiful, obviously) flies at the moment! As such, we've ended up with another two man show. At least we had Hewso's veteran leadership to get us through, although his regular microphone also decided that the night of recording would be a fantastic time to die, so who knows if we've done something to get ourselves cursed. It does seem a fitting, err, fit for this year's game release lineup. A bit of an odd one, this fortnight. A mix of Tim forgetting about an encroaching holiday season and everyone (both at Player 2 and, seemingly, the rest of the entire world) being sick, we ended up recording early with a skeleton crew. That is to say, Ken showed up to save all of our hides. This basically gave Ken an excuse to talk about how good that new Top Gun movie is instead of a videogame (somebody please consider gifting him a copy of Ace Combat 7). There would be no such shortage of games in the second half, however. We found a patch of memory lane that led straight to 1998, and while we were already confident that it was an absolutely banner year, actually reminiscing about it really brought about just how big of a year it really was for video games. So with Matt in charge and really wanting to talk about food after spending the day cooking an American 4th of July feast, that is what the team did. Although being a gaming podcast we do link the two together to talk about all things food and video games. There is a strong history of food in games, from bin roast chickens for health to complex meals put together by experts, the crew of Hewso, Stephen and PixelCast first-timer, Jason Hawkins go through them all. It was a bit bumpy and all-over-the place, but this year's E3-only-not-really-E3 was, if anything, perhaps better than expected. Nobody covering it seems to have gotten doxed, either, so that's an added bonus. While following everything was a little draining, many folk at Player 2 did their darndest. Of course, those who did their absolute best probably need some more sleep as a result of the absolutely brutal hours when set to Australian time-zones.

E3 is dead! Long live E3! Surely enough, E3 is insisting that it is in fact not dead, but as stubborn as those cries are, the voice behind them is weak and we're pretty sure also coming from an UCU room. The season, however, is looking to live on. Sony has bestowed a State of Play video on us already, and our crew give their initial impressions of this, as well as taking few stabs at what the other big players may have in store. The crew is question is led by Hewso this time around. Since getting his internets fixed, the poor guy can't catch a break. He's joined by Tim, who nobody can seem to escape from, as well as Rob, who is welcome and fresh and an absolute lord of all things retro.

As Australia emerges from nearly a decade of darkness, bleary eyed, tepidly tip-toing into the sunlight; cautiously checking for landmines lest the suddenly greener grass turn out to be a mirage, Player 2's PixelCast has turned eight-four, and so we've taken a hard right and steered directly into games that paint a future of chaos, destruction or utter dispiriting bleakness. Or possibly a mix of the above. This episode really does have everything. Tim is leading the charge, followed by old-hands Ken and Hewso. We have both glee and despair! Videogames and phone call interruptions! Totally forgetting to keep enough time stamps, so said interruptions end up in the final show! But, okay... it's still mostly about videogames.

Gaming is getting strange. So strange, in fact, that editor-man himself, Matt Hewson, has had to come back down to Earth from whatever satellites he's been bouncing around to try and make heads and/or tails of it all. Whoever thought that you might offload such respectable IP as Deus Ex and Tomb Raider so that you could blow all of it on a bunch of scammy JPEGs? Somebody at Square Enix, apparently. Tim and Ken are along for the ride, and, fear not, we do discuss some actual games. In fact, a pretty interesting spread of them, considering the current release drought that has come about after the floodgates were opened at the very beginning of the year. There's even a F2P title with some actual promise in the mix!

The games, they are suddenly a-coming, and we’re all struggling to keep our lives in order and under control. Time is now meaningless, everyone has somehow logged 900 hours into Elden Ring and we let Steve run the first half of the episode for almost a full hour because we honestly couldn’t tell if it was already midnight, or just three minutes past when we started. Ken and Tim sit in on the spare benches to talk about games that just grab you wholly and then eat at every spare moment of time in your limited time on Earth that can possibly be squeezed out of modern life. We're still in the first quarter, and already 2022 has stared some pretty shitty years right in the eye and, without blinking, shrugged and given a wholly earnest "hold my beer". As such, when thrust back into the host chair, Tim decided it may be time to look back rather than forwards. This episode, then, is dedicated to the year 1991. But also kind of 1990 and 1992, because international release dates were super squishy back then and two-year gaps between territories were kind of normal. Perhaps its best to consider it the early '90s, in general.
He's not alone, thankfully. Rob jumps back in the first time this year, and Sarah joins in, too. Considering that she may or may not have been calling in from under the ocean (because, you know, 2022), we should all be grateful for her being there to balance the two idiot nerd boys out. And just like that, the year is almost over. It’s been a wild ride, at once too fast, yet also far too long. For our last (regular) episode of the PixelCast for 2021, then, Ken has decided that we should take a look back at what has been the sequel to 2020: a year at once more hopeful, but then, somehow, probably even worse? A pretty bad sequel by any standards, even considering what it was coming on from. We give 2021 a total of half a star, and it only gets that because of all those Activision staff that have started walking out. We do talk games, of course, but this episode does come off the rails at times. And who can blame it? With all the billionaires hoarding way too much wealth, there’s no money left to maintain the rains with. Infrastructure be damned! Let Elon have his stupid tunnel because who needs trains anyway! The point, then, is that the year is coming to a close and (at least for those who have taken appropriate precautions) the world is starting to open up a bit.
