Continuing Comfort and Consolation
No Christmas gift is of much use if you leave it in the box. It’s not surprising how many people love to think of the “little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay” at Christmas. What is surprising, is when they leave Him there. Here’s the gift that’s no longer in the box. Here’s our Savior who is no longer "away in the manger," in the feed box. A Christmas Cracker
There’s a great English tradition of popping Christmas Crackers at this time of the year. The cracker is a brightly wrapped cardboard tube that’s twisted on the end. Two people, one each side, grab and end of it and pull. When it pops open with a bang, inside is found a colorful tissue paper crown; a small trinket for a prize, and a piece of paper with a riddle or a joke. In Galatians, Paul sounds the good news of our Savior's birth with a bang, presents the crown of our salvation, solves a riddle and reveals the prize of eternal life in Christ.

Even Better Than 5G
Down through the centuries God communicated, through the prophets, that He would send us a Savior. Our hearts have thrilled, even this day, to hear those promises recorded by Moses, Isaiah, Micah and more in the Advent readings leading up this Christmas announcement in Hebrews.
But now, everything has changed with the birth of our Savior.

Christmas Cancelled? Impossible!
If Christmas could have been cancelled it would have been. Not this year’s Christmas, but the first Christmas itself. But here’s the wonderful thing. Jesus did come! Christmas has arrived! Our Savior is born and He has brought salvation with Him. The circumstances of this year bring into unique clarity all that is unchanged – and all which can never be cancelled – God’s eternal love for you and His gift of a Savior.

The Cure Has Arrived and is Here For All
This night of our holy Savior’s birth is not a distraction from this fear-filled and inquity-infected world, it’s the antidote! It’s the front page news announcing the cure for sin, shame and death. In love, God sent His Son to save us! The angel reports, “You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Traveling For Christmas
This year you and I have been told not to hit the road, not to book flights and not to line up for the train. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend “postponing travel and staying home, as this is the best way to protect yourself and others this year.” As you and I kick the rug and lament that we’re going to be on our own this year for Christmas, it might be useful to recall that’s how seems Joseph and Mary found themselves as the events of that first Christmas drew near.

Living Christmas trees have caught on in recent years. As opposed to cut trees, these trees are sold in containers of soil and intended for replanting after its use as a Christmas tree. They usually usually include such varieties as Spruce, Pines and Firs. Hey, but what about ... an oak? Okay, chances are good that you may not think about an oak tree when we think of Christmas, but Isaiah uses this interesting image to describe the wonderful salvation that God has given to us.

Righteousness And Peace Kiss
Clusters of mistletoe, with their tiny white berries, are hung as Christmas decorations and couples often share their affection by exchanging a kiss when they stand underneath them. Well, as you can imagine, this came to a screeching halt this year when COVID arrived. However, the Psalmist describes a kiss that at one time also seemed unimaginable. It’s found here in Psalm 85.

In the nineties a small, desert town built a sign that was to serve as a giant beacon promising weary travelers rest and comfort. In Isaiah, the prophet describes another beacon in the desert. And if you’re wearied by your sins, and feel far away from God, here’s wonderful good news. Look up and see what’s coming. The voice of the Lord cries out, “Comfort.”

Watching And Ready
To avoid missing a good sale savvy shoppers have taken to downloading apps for their phones that track the prices of items they have their eye on. You enter those items on a “Watch List” and it will watch for you. And then, if there is a price drop, the app automatically sends you and notification so that you don’t miss the deal. The day dawns when Jesus will return again. So He told the disciples, and you and me, to be ready. How do you and I do that?

Don't Make Me Come Down There?
A number of years ago there were a series of billboards that appeared along highways across the county. There were a series of tongue-in-cheek quotes purported to be from God. One of the billboards had this slogan, “Don’t make me come down there. Signed, God.” In other words, if things get any worse, if people get any more evil, if we’re not careful, God’s going to have to come down here and straighten us out, that some folks are in for a lot of trouble. But what it didn't say is the Good News that God HAS come down.

What makes pottery so fascinating is the love a care that the potter puts into each step. He has to mix the clay and molds and shapes it. It has to go through the extreme temperature as it’s fired in the kiln. And then it is glazed to reveal a remarkable finish. Tear Free
It’s hard to imagine what it will be like when there will be no more tears and no more crying. Right now our lives are filled with tears. Our Hope That Far Surpasses A Wish
We remember, and give thanks, for all of those, who have died in faith, and are now with the Lord. It’s understandable that we may shed a tear as we remember them. Even though the time is short, when we will see them again, it still hurts not to have them here with us as we await the day of the resurrection. However, if we’re not careful we may let those tears give way to despair – as if our Savior hadn’t come. ?God's Word reminds us of the comforting and certain hope that is ours in Christ.

A Mighty Fortress
One of the most popular hymns from the reformation is Martin Luther’s, “A Mighty Fortress.” The lyrics echo the security and comfort that is described for us here in Psalm 46. As you listen to the words of the Psalm this is not solitary solace. We stand side-by-side before our Savior, facing the same stress and struggles, with the same strength and support that comes from Him. With voices together united we sing, “The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.”

Christ Alone
As we get closer to celebrating the Reformation on Saturday, we’ve been taking a at those three great Latin phrases which describe what we believe. We believe that we have been declared righteous before God by grace alone (sola gratia), through faith alone (sola fide), on the basis of Scripture alone (sola scriptura). However, there’s still one more that actually serves as the foundation for all of the rest. That phrase is Christ alone (Solus Christus). Here's the wonderful comfort that ties all the other three together.

Scripture Alone
Today, it’s become popular for folks to refer to ‘my truth,’ as if there’s a different truth out there for everyone. On the night Jesus was betrayed He prayed for His disciples, “Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.” We believe that sinners, like you and me, are declared righteous before God by grace alone (sola gratia), through faith alone (sola fide). And we believe this on the basis of Scripture alone (sola scriptura).

Faith Alone
"Sola Fide," "faith alone" means that you and I are saved through faith, not by works. Paul celebrates this Good News in Ephesians where we hear, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.”

Three words you may hear this time of year are "Trick or treat." Bu there are three Latin phrases you may often hear at this time of the year as we celebrate the Reformation – sola gratia, sola fide and sola scriptura. We believe that sinners, like you and me, are declared righteous before God by grace alone (sola gratia), through faith alone (sola fide), on the basis of Scripture alone (sola scriptura). Today, let's look at the first sola. The bedrock of what you and I believe is the wonderful assurance that we have been saved by grace alone.

You're Being Watched
You’re being watched. Look up at the cameras on the store ceiling. Lift up your head at the intersection and notice the camera on the pole. There are more of them each day. Many find that intimidating. The Psalmist looked up, not to cameras, but to the hills, and rejoiced that God was watching over him. So can you and I.

Only One
Imagine walking in to an ice cream parlor, see all of those tantalizing flavors listed, but looking down to see that every single tub was filled with the exact same flavor. What would you say if the server told you that “Even though it goes by many different names it’s all the same flavor?” Think of how often folks today like to say that despite all the different names we have for Him, we all worship the same god. It certainly sounds modern. But here in Isaiah, God announces, "I am the LORD, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God." And, as it turns out, that's not a bad thing.

I've Got Three Words For You ...
There's popular phrase in the real estate market whenever you’re discussing home values. Your agent may say, “I’ve got three words for you: location, location, location.” No matter where your life has taken you, or where you find yourself this day, Paul's got three words for you.

Today, October 21, has been called “Back to the Future Day.” Isaiah's words, which were read in many churches last Sunday, are now centuries old. And hearing them is like traveling in a time machine. Think About Such Things
When Paul invites us to think about "whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable," it's soothing get away from the bad news that surrounds us, take a walk, and enjoy the changing color of the leaves - at least for a little while. However, while that’s true for you and me, it certainly wasn’t the case for Paul in prison. As the apostle continues, here in Philippians, it soon becomes clear that he is pointing to a source of an enduring peace that comes even in the midst of whatever we may face.

Ongoing Thanks

God's Love Is Not In Short Supply
Toilet paper has sometimes been referred to as one of the most important inventions of the nineteenth century. If you have your doubts, just think back to last Spring when the shelves went empty. Commenting on the phenomenon, Jay Zagorsky, of Social Science Space wrote, “As an economist, I am fascinated by why people hoard products that are not having supply problems.” Thankfully, God's love for us is not in short supply. You and I can be confident of this as our Savior calls us to share it freely.

Not There Yet
Using the language of a runner here in Philippians, Paul writes, “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me” (NIV 84). He’s referring to crossing the finish line at the resurrection. And even though it’s in sight, you and I are not there yet. But by grace of God that He has given to us in our Savior, and the power of the Holy Spirit who strengthens us each day as we repent and rely on His mercy, you can be assured that you will.

Somehow ... But Certainly
In Philippians, Paul describes how he wants to know Christ “and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.” Now, when Paul says “somehow,” he’s not doubting in any way that God can do it. In fact, he’s quite sure of it, being a witness himself of our risen Savior who appears to him on the road to Damascus. And like us he's not trying to figure out how God will do that, but He knows with certainly that He will do it.

Like A Needle Scratching A Record
When suffering enters our life it's like the jarring sound of a needle on a turntable scratching across a vinyl record. However, the apostle doesn't see this as being, necessarily, a bad thing. In fact, among other things, it causes us to call out to our Savior in prayer. It also brings into high definition those words we confess when we say that Jesus "suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried."

Family Road Trip
There were times when Paul must have felt like he was on a family road trip in the car. Here in Philippians, he writes, "Do everything without complaining or arguing.” The truth is wherever we gather before God together, seeking His mercy and forgiveness for our daily sins, we’re going to find ourselves in the company of other sinners doing the exact same thing. By Whose Authority?
Jesus drove off all of those who were conducting business inside the temple courts. He overturned the tables of the money changers and drove off the dove dealers. He also healed many of the blind and crippled who came there to see Him and He taught the crowds. After all that commotion Matthew tells us, that “the chief priests and the elders of the people came to Him. ‘By what authority are You doing these things?’” This is actually popular question these days and one we may even find ourselves asking.

Our Hope That Far Surpasses A Wish
We remember, and give thanks, for all of those, who have died in faith, and are now with the Lord. It’s understandable that we may shed a tear as we remember them. After all, we miss them. And even though the time is short, when we will see them again, it still hurts not to have them here with us as we await the day of the resurrection. However, if we’re not careful we may let those tears give way to despair – as if our Savior hadn’t come. God has given us a remarkable hope and a reason for hope amidst our tears.

Taking A Knee
As the apostle instructed weak Christians not to judge their brothers on practices which are neither commanded nor forbidden in Scripture, and as he admonished those who were strong in their faith not to look down upon those who were still learning the distinction, he shared a familiar phrase from God’s Word in Isaiah. He said, “It is written: “‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.’” So why did Paul choose to quote these words here in this passage?

Not An Island
In John Donne’s famous prose from 1624, the writer says that now famous line: “No man is an island.” Donne may have been familiar with the words which the Holy Spirit inspired Paul to write here in Romans. In this passage, God’s Word reminds us that, as God's redeemed children, we are connected to one another in Christ. Peter asked our Savior, "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?" He may have felt that was quite extravagant. Instead of the usual three times, which some felt was the limit, Peter doubled it and threw in one more for good measure. Envy Evangelism?
In Romans, Paul writes, "Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I make much of my ministry in the hope that I may somehow arouse my own people to envy and save some of them." “Would you rather?” Here’s an interesting game that you may have played. It’s a conversation game where you’re faced with a dilemma. You’re given two options. The only rule to the game is that your answer can’t be “both.” Here in Romans, Paul compares our suffering in Christ with the glory that you and I will have with our Savior in heaven. But in this case, it’s not a game of “Would you rather?” It isn’t an either/or question. It’s a package. With one comes the other.

The Seed That Fell On Good Soil
As the people listened to Jesus tell the “Parable of the Sower,” they must have been amazed at how the farmer spread the seed generously in all directions. Who farms this way? The farmer continues to spread the seed generously. In love, God broadcasts the Gospel in every direction. It’s a reminder of the incredible love of God, who as Paul describes in 1 Timothy, “wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.” What a blessing it is when it takes root in our lives and sets down deep roots.

The Seed That Fell Among Thorns
Weeds may be pesky for petunias but it’s a killer when it comes to crops. In the "Parable of the Sower," Jesus compares the cares of the this world, and the deceitfulness of wealth, to weeds when it comes to hearing the Gospel and growing in faith. He describes how, if we're not careful, worship and hearing God's Word can lose their priority and struggle to find room in our busy lives.

The Seed Sown Along The Path
If you have a broadcast spreader, for your seed and fertilizer, it may have come with an "edge guard" to prevent the seed from going where you don't want it. But our Savior sows the seed of the Gospel everywhere – even knowing full well that some may tread it under foot and treat it like bird food. But there's a good reason that He sows it lavishly and unsparingly!

And One More Thing
When it comes to what you and I know about God, we wouldn’t know anything about Him if God Himself hadn’t revealed it to us. Jesus tells us, “All things have been committed to me by My Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son.” However, what Jesus has revealed is nothing short of breath-taking. It’s the kind of announcement that should have us on the end of our seat and cheering.

In Matthew's Gospel, Jesus had just come from an area which rejected God and His salvation. And they considered themselves too “wise and learned” to accept such a thing. “Buy one, get four free.” Today is the Fourth of July and I’m pretty sure we’re going to see and hear a lot of fireworks going off tonight. There are tents selling fireworks up and and down the roads and in mall parking lots. One of the tents, in the parking lot of the story where I go grocery shopping, it had a sign which read, “But one, get four free.” Or course, in that case, what does it mean when they say “free”?

In 1 Peter 5:6, Peter reminds us to “Humble ourselves.” This word gets used in Scripture a number of different ways. When it’s used to speak to you and me it’s usually to address our pride. In this case, we like to think that we’ve got things covered and we don’t need any help or assistance. Peter, speaking both by inspiration of God and from experience, reminds us of what a blessing it is to recognize our need and dependence on our Savior.

I Don't Get No Respect

Are We There Yet?
Jesus told the disciples, "As you go, preach this message: 'The kingdom of heaven is near.'" One translation of this verse mistakenly reads “the kingdom of heaven is soon to be here.” But, if that’s true, then it’s a little the kid in the back seat of the car who asks Dad and Mom, “Are we there yet?” and gets that unsatisfying answer, “No, not yet, but we’re almost there.” In other words, “Strap yourselves in for a bumpy ride, we still have a long way to go.” The reality is so much better. Following a night of prayer Luke tells us, “When morning came, [Jesus] called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also designated apostles.” Matthew lists their names. The one thing that stands out is that they were all different. They weren’t cookie-cutter identical. And that tells you a lot about our Savior and about you.

Weary, Worried And Helpless?
The image of lost sheep without a shepherd is a familiar one in the Bible but it’s probably not something that most of us have ever run into. So, it may sound surprising to hear Jesus referring the people in the towns and villages of Israel as “sheep without a shepherd.” When Jesus looked out He saw people, as He described, who were “harassed and helpless.” A better translation of that word “harassed” might be “weary" or "worried.” Weary, worried and helpless? Now that begins to sound a little bit more familiar.

Best Intentions
There’s no reason to believe that the Israelites were anything less than sincere when the told Moses, “We will do everything the Lord has said.” However, even best intentions aren't enough. How many of us, before those weeks of isolation and quarantine, told ourselves, “You know, someday, if I ever get the time, I’d like to write a book, take piano lessons or learn a new language.” Then, all of a sudden ... we had it. Thankfully, our salvation doesn't rest on our best of intentions.

Yesterday Christian congregations around the world celebrating the Festival of the Holy Trinity. God has revealed Himself to us in his Word as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. However, as soon as we attempt to describe the Trinity it begins to sound more like a puzzle than a celebration. You may be thinking to yourself, wouldn’t be easier to simply say, as John does in his first letter, that “God is love,” and leave it at that? But that’s just it, here is exactly how our God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit has revealed Himself.

It’s not surprising that the sin, stress and fears of this world leave us drained. The disappointment and sorrow caused by our own sins, and then watching the news and experiencing the weight of living in this fallen world, saps the life out of us. Peaceful Dreams
It sounds frightening when Peter quoted God’s promise from Joel on the Day of Pentecost. We hear, “I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.” That sounds like it would be enough to give anyone nightmares. But it less to do with what you and I see on the nightly news and more of what took place that day Jesus gave His life for us on the cross and the events leading up to Pentecost.

Jesus Is With Us In The Lord's Supper
Thankfully, when Paul describes the ascension of our Savior, the words “far above” don’t mean “far away.” If that were true then Jesus would be distant from our day-to-day lives, our concerns and what we experience. And even two or three, gathered together in His name, and standing on each other’s shoulders, wouldn’t be able to reach up to Him. However, in worship, we’re reminded that it’s Jesus who comes to us. He comes to bless us and to forgive, fortify and feed us. He comes to us in the word, read and proclaimed to us by our pastor. And He comes to us in the Lord’s Supper.

Gifts From Our Ascended Savior
Paul tells us that “When [Jesus] ascended on high, He … gave gifts to men.” That sounds exciting. And so, like a small child our imagination begins to race and we ask, “What did you get me, what did you get me?” And then He tells us here in His Word. He "gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers.” Our Savior’s preaching and teaching didn’t end on the day He was taken up into heaven. It has been expanded in a way that is nothing short of amazing.

Our Defense Attorney
“What Happens When an Attorney Dies?” That’s a serious question and it’s one that the American Bar Association even addressed in an article as recently as 2016. Who speaks on behalf of the client? Who pleads their case and advocates for them? It's one that You and I have a risen and living Savior. His death hasn't silenced His voice – it sealed the case. You and I have been declared righteous in His sight through faith. And having risen and ascended into heaven Jesus is our Advocate who speaks in our defense.

In Ephesians, Paul tells us, “[God] seated Him [Christ] at His right hand in the heavenly realms.” It’s tempting to imagine the royal seating arrangement in heaven. And it’s hard get that image out of our head of a gold throne with rich red upholstery. But it’s a lot better than that.

Not A Socially Distant Savior
Social Distancing. Whoever imagined that this phrase would one day become a common part of our vocabulary? But maybe that’s what it sounds like when you hear of Jesus’ ascension in the New Testament. Luke tells us, “When He had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, He lifted up his hands and blessed them. While He was blessing them, He left them and was taken up into heaven.” Now that really does sound like ‘social distancing.’ But wait a minute, in Matthew He promised them, “I am with you always.” How can He be with us when He is in heaven?

A Just Man In The Stead Of The Unjust
The Memorial Day weekend reminds us of the “ultimate sacrifice given by the few for the many.” in his first letter, Peter reminds us of the sacrifice made for us by our Savior. In this case, it wasn’t the few for the many, it was the sacrifice of one for all. It sounds like an epitaph – something you might read on a grave stone: “Here lies Jesus who gave His life. A just man in the stead of the unjust.” But, thankfully, for you and me, and those who have given their lives in the service to God and our nation, there is no such marker.

A guilty conscience brings a lot of pain and sleepless nights. It haunts us and fuels our insecurities. God recognizes how difficult it can be to fully appreciate that we are forgiven. As a means of confirming the very forgiveness He has spoken in His Word He also points us to a wonderful gift by which He assures us a good conscience before Him.

Judgment From God?
“Is the coronavirus a judgment from God?” Whenever someone points to a crisis and says, “It’s a sign from God,” it’s interesting how the message never seems to be clear. That’s also true for this current pandemic. But notice how clearly Paul spoke to the philosophers on Mars Hill in Athens. Instead of looking at everything around him and trying to guess what God is thinking, Paul focused their attention to how God has made Himself known in Jesus and His Word.

When Paul addressed the philosophers at the Areopagus in Athens, and told them about God, he explained to them that “He is not served by human hands, as if He needed anything.” One thing that the worship of manmade gods has in common is the idea that God needs our sacrifices, gifts and offerings. The reality is that we are the ones in need – and the one true God gives us more than we could have ever imagined.

Fat Cats Or Rescued Sheep?
It seems like it would be an easier life to be a fat cat than a rescued sheep. It’s understandable to want to escape from health scares, employment problems and the struggles that make up our day-to-day lives. Thieves and robbers. Those may not be two words that come to mind when you think about sheep grazing peacefully in a pasture but it’s a real problem for ranchers. He Calls Us By Name
Remember when futuristic space movies would should a time when computers would speak and actually address its user by name? Today, many homes now have smart devices that come equipped with voice assistants. And one of the more popular features of these devices is that they can learn your voice and even use your name when you're talking to them. It's a skill that's acquired through a series of questions and voice prompts. However, Jesus reminds us that as our Good Shepherd He actually does know us, personally, and as called us by name.

A “Bull Market” is the description that is given when the economy is sound and when the price of stocks, bonds, and commodities continues to rise over an extended period of time. A "Bear Market" is one where prices decline by more than 20%. As the downward trend continues, investor optimism is replaced by instead by concern, fear and pessimism. In the midst of all of this concern, and time of unexpected upheaval, Peter doesn’t draw on the imagery of either of the bull or the bear. Instead, he calls us to focus our attention on the Lamb.

Hearts That Burn Within Us
For the two disciples on the way to Emmaus, it looked as if someone had poured cold water over all their hopes. In love, Jesus didn’t abandon these disciples to their false hopes and kicking the ashes. Instead, He directed them back into His Word to discover where true hope is to be found. He does the same for you and me as we hear again what our Savior's resurrection is all about.

On that first Easter morning Jesus made a point of showing the disciples His wounds. It verified that this was truly Jesus who was standing before them. What Could Be Better Than A Video Chat?
With all of our technology today, that enables us to take on the phone and video chat, we still experience what our grandparents did before us. We miss having our loved ones, right here, right beside us, in our midst. We still haven’t figured out a way to have them come right through that phone and actually be with us in the room. That would be pretty amazing. But our Risen Savior, who overcame locked doors to be with the disciples is also able to with us, right now, in our midst and in our homes to bring us peace.

Important News? It's Earth-Shaking!
When construction takes place in a rocky area crews must often use explosives. A series of warning whistles are are the announcement that the earth will soon shake. On Easter morning the earth shook. But there were no signal whistles announcing that the earth would shake. And there’s a good reason for that. In this case it was just the opposite. The earthquake itself was the signal to bring attention to a very important announcement.

They Clasped His Feet
Matthew tells us that when the women were returning from the grave, and saw the risen Jesus, "They came to Him, clasped His feet and worshiped Him." They clasped His feet!? Isn't that an interesting detail? It's easy to miss. And yet it's one that Matthew specifically notes here in this verse and it’s a detail that the Holy Spirit inspired him to include when reporting on these events. As it turns out, it's more than simply an interesting bit of trivia. It reveals something that's too amazing to overlook.

The View From The Criminal's Cross
It’s hard to look at the artwork that depicts Jesus handing on the cross with the two criminals on either side. Like John the disciple, Jesus’ mother, and the women, we are observers who can only look up in tears to watch what unfolds. After His suffering was complete, Matthew tells us that Jesus cried out, bowed His head and died. But then he tells us, “At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.” This was no small event. In fact, it lets you know that it's no longer "curtains for you."

What A Meal!
What a meal! On Sunday morning, our congregation has one of the best Easter breakfasts I have ever seen. We have eggs and bacon, fresh fruit, sausage and biscuits, a variety of different kinds of waffles and pancakes, fruit juice and so much more. It’s amazing! And I’m sure that’s the case at your church as well … except this year. With social distancing and staying at home we will have to wait to enjoy this meal together again. That's true for another very special meal that is hosted by our Savior Himself. But what a wonderful day it will be when we get to share it again!

How do you and I follow in Jesus' footsteps this Holy Week? There are a variety of different activities that folks undertake to do this. I try to have in mind what it must have been like as I read through the Gospels. I imagine that you may do the same thing. But you and I are more than mere spectators riding along on a tour bus viewing the sites and sounds of our Savior's Passion. ?Through faith you are actually following in His footsteps. And the apostle Paul describes the amazing manner by which God has brought this about.

Why A Donkey?
Some may have hoped that Jesus was going to flex some muscle when He made His entrance into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. A Parade Too Short?
A lot of folks don’t want to think about the terrifying events of Good Friday, and our Savior's crucifixion, when they think of Palm Sunday. It’s nice to wave palms, sing triumphant songs and let it stop there. But then, you really do have a parade that’s too short. As tempting as it might be to see this as a “victory parade,” the victory was still ahead. This parade continues to the cross, empty tomb ... and into eternity!

In John’s Gospel we hear that Jesus told the disciples, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.” John then tells us, “Jesus had been speaking of his death, but His disciples thought He meant natural sleep. So then He told them plainly, ‘Lazarus is dead.’” So why would Jesus use this picture of Lazarus 'sleeping' when in fact He knew that His friend had died?

Forgive God?
Does God need to be forgiven? God is often accused of being cold, uncaring – and even cruel. On a larger scale folks often wonder why God would permit so much of the suffering that we see around us. We see the devastating effects of sickness as well as storms and disasters. When you and I are engulfed in grief it’s easy not to notice how quickly the devil shows up on our doorstep. On this day in Samaria a lone woman made her way to the well to get water. John tells us that it was the sixth hour, high noon, when the sun would be blazing overhead. Who would come to the well at this hour? Someone who was hoping not to run into anyone else – or at least anyone she knew. But here's Jesus, who made it a point to be there at that very moment, and who knew her thirst for sin. He came to bring her the eternal refreshment of forgiveness. He also brings this very same soothing mercy to you and me this day in His Word.

Better Than The Legend
There’s also a tendency to attach all sorts of legends to saints and Patrick is no exception. Probably the most famous legends that surrounds St. Patrick is the story of how he drove all the snakes out of Ireland. Here's A Gift For Everyone!
“Here’s a present for everyone!” Do you remember those gifts when you were a kid? Let’s be honest, it was tempting to hear that phrase, “Here’s a present for everyone,” and immediately tune out because you it didn't sound like something that specifically included you. And maybe that’s how it sounded when you first heard these words spoken to Abram in Genesis. But take another look. In this verse from John’s Gospel, Jesus assures and says, “God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world.” Jesus didn't come to slap a condemned sign on us. That sign went up a long time ago. What makes God’s sending His Son into the world so amazing is He did this, as Jesus goes on to say, “to save the world through Him.” Jesus came to take the condemned sign off of you and me and put it on Himself.

When Jesus told the disciples about the cross, Peter didn't want to hear it. Peter wanted Jesus to listen to him. “'Never, Lord!' he said. 'This shall never happen to you!'” At the Transfiguration, the Father spoke from the bright cloud and said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!" There is no salvation, or the eternal glory that comes with it, apart from the cross.
