[234] It’s 2004. Phorest’s Founder & CEO Ronan Perceval is hunched underneath the salon reception desk, troubleshooting a hardware issue in the first infant version of Phorest’s Software.

[186] Assessing staff performance is often a threatening process for both managers and employees. However, when you put in place clear KPIs, agree on a plan of action, and put your staff in control of their performance, you provide an opportunity to discuss progress and make aligning employee and company goals easier.
The problem with statistics isn't the data itself; it's how you interpret it. Looking at figures alone to get an unbiased picture of an employee's performance might feel logical, but in the end, it will give you the wrong overview or assessment. Numbers without context are just that: numbers.

Tom Chapman on His Journey, Mental Fitness & Training the Next Generation of Barbers
[163] After losing a friend to suicide, award-winning UK-based barber & international educator Tom Chapman (@tomchapman_hair) decided to do something about the biggest killer of young men in the UK*. Through the Lions Barber Collective charity, he raises mental illness awareness and aims to prevent suicide by creating training that enables barbers to recognise, talk and listen out for symptoms of depression.
This week's conversation allows for an insight into Tom's journey and current projects, how his charity saw the light of day, and the importance of educating the next generation of barbers.

[160] "If you are a hairstylist, sleep now — because when this is all over you better have your doors open 24/7 for the amount of un-groomed, boxed hair dyed, home cut bangs you're going to have to fix." NO — that's a hard no. If you're too busy to take care of yourself, how do you expect to deliver the quality standards in customer service that you hold yourself accountable to?
Collectively, we're currently navigating financial instability, trauma, grief, fear of losing loved ones, etc. Individually, we all have different thresholds to dealing with every situation from that list. In the hair and beauty industry specifically, knowing what to do now to best prepare for the return to trading is stressing more than one. The day salons and spas reopen will come, and with that, work stress will follow — it's fine, it's inevitable. However, if you don't set healthy boundaries for yourself now, in the long run, you run the risk of burning out.

The Hair Aid Global Cut-A-Thon: Changing the World One Haircut at a Time
[149] Since its inception in 2010, Australian-based Hair Aid works globally with volunteer hairdressers to provide free haircutting training for people living in extreme poverty. The organisation has been doing this work in the Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia, and expanding its operations in Thailand and Vietnam last year, changing in total over 5000 lives.
Part of the organisation's fundraising activities is the annual Hair Aid Global Cut-A-Thon event (@globalcutathon), held this coming Sunday, March 29, 2020, and which encourages salons, stylists and training organisations to come together and cut hair for donations. To discuss both Hair Aid and the upcoming fundraiser, this week's episode features CEO of Hair Aid (@hairaidinc) Selina Tomasich and CEO of Salon718 salons (@salon718) Michaella Blisset Williams.

Jay Williams on Emotional Intelligence as a Competitive Differentiator
[132] People weren't actively buying on Amazon ten years ago. We weren't streaming our movies at home, nor were we getting our groceries delivered. We're getting to a point where someone might have 1/40th of the human interaction they would have had 20,30 years ago. That creates a premium on the hair and beauty industry's craft. Robots and AI might be knocking at various industries' doors, but they'll only be replacing repetitive and monotonous jobs. According to the World Economic Forum, the ability to read, understand and adjust behaviour when facing various emotions will be one of the top ten skills businesses will be giving importance to in the coming years, especially when hiring staff.

Prof. Denise Baden on Sustainability & Motivating Eco-Friendly Behaviours in the Salon Industry
[125] With the damage to our environment and the increase of plastic waste an ever growing concern, becoming more knowledgeable about the products we use, our actions and habits is key in discovering how we can make friendlier choices for both the environment as well as for ourselves.
In 2012, Professor Denise Baden from the Southampton Business School was awarded funds from the ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) to engage with hairdressers and their clients to establish more sustainable practices. Following the success of this project, she has since been working with awarding organisations to further embed sustainability into the industry’s practices. A couple of weeks out of Conscious Hair & Beauty taking place in London at which Professor Denise Baden will be speaking, this episode explores ways to motivate eco-friendly behaviours and sustainable solutions in the salon industry.

[105] Rebooking has a massive impact on salons and spas’ client loyalty. Unfortunately, not every client is always ready to pencil in a new appointment while they're at the til. More even, it can be challenging to get your staff in the habit of asking people to rebook, and well maybe you don’t have a receptionist, so you’re relying on your team when they’re busy getting ready for their next client.
Phorest's new predictive rebooking SMS feature is geared towards clients who, based on their individual history with your salon, are due to come back to the salon soon. It's pre-emptive: you're offering these clients the chance to book maybe before they've even realised they need to. And from over 400 salons trialling this feature in February 2019, a total of €2,000 worth of rebooking SMS has been sent, resulting in over €93,000 salon revenue from the appointments booked as a result of those texts. It started strong with the podcast getting nominated and winning Silver in the category ‘Best Podcast’ at the 2017 Digital Media Awards! Retain the 9%: The Impacts of the Irish Government VAT Increase on Hairdressing

On October 9th, 2018, the Irish Minister for Finance announced a VAT (Value Added Tax) increase for hairdressing services along with a rise in National Minimum Wage and employers PRSI contribution, resulting in an industry call-to-action held on October 23rd, 2018.

#30Days2Grow: Katrina Sutherland on Her Salon’s Experience & Results
[074] On this week’s Phorest FM episode, Killian and Zoe interview #30Days2Grow participant and winner of the 'Share Your Experience' contest Katrina Sutherland, salon owner and founder of Katrina Sutherland Country Spa, opened in July 2007 and the first beauty spa north of Inverness.
Katrina, who hails from Occumster, Caithness, trained as a beauty therapist in 1988 at the Clydebank College in Dunbartonshire. During her time there she gained The Confederation of International Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology Diploma and The Public Institute Health and Hygiene in Beauty Therapy Certificate. She was also awarded prizes for Best Electrologist and Best Body Therapist for the year.

MJ Deziel on Building a Mobile B2B2C Business in the Hair & Beauty Industry
[058] On this week's episode, Killian and Zoe welcome Montreal-based hairstylist MJ Déziel to the show. Since graduating from "L'école des métiers des Faubourgs-de-Montréal" in 2012, MJ Déziel has been keeping herself very busy. They were recruited by the RedKen Canada Art Team, travelled the country to offer development classes, perfected her own training in London, Dublin, Tokyo and Las Vegas and has even launched their own business after spending some time working for other salon owners under commission-based business models.
In this episode, they discuss their business model for The Regulars, a company they co-founded in 2015, with their partner Philippe Bélanger, and which provides mobile B2B2C lifestyle and wellbeing services.
