Stéphane Nicoll on Contributing to and Growing Communities
Jim Grisanzio from Java Developer Relations talks with Stéphane Nicoll, a software engineer based in Belgium working on the Spring team. Stéphane talks about his experience becoming a Java developer, his observations seeing Java evolve and improve, and the importance of contributing to Java and Open Source generally. He's keen on building community by directly engaging engineers at events as well as mentoring contributors through the development process for issue reports and code changes. He said that "building our community is super important for us" as he outlined the process that he and his team uses to welcome new developers. That says it all.

Program Update: The Move to Java!
In this short episode Jim Grisanzio talks about his move to the Java Advocacy Team in Oracle's Java Platform Group and the coming changes in the podcast. A new name will be announced soon, and we'll be focusing on profiles of Java developers globally. The format will remain the same in terms of casual conversations one on one or in small groups.
Communities are about people. So, that's what we'll be talking about here with Java developers. Who's doing really cool work? Who's solving the toughest problems? Who's creating new opportunities? Who's new? Who's been around forever? Everyone has something to contribute. It'll be great fun.
We've already engaged with the Java community in many previous episodes over the years, so we're looking forward to even more Java from here on in!

Oracle Code Innovate Retools, Embraces Virtual Format to Engage Developers
Jim Grisanzio from Oracle Developer Relations talks with Chip Baber from Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) about the Oracle Code Innovate Program. The conversation centers around building the cloud community by working directly with developers — that's side by side, hands on coding collaboration — on real cloud projects for active customers.
The program, which started in 2018 with in-person sprints and moved virtual in 2020, uses a flexible Agile framework that spans a week of interactions, such as planning, training, ideation, coding, standups, demos, etc. What’s great about the program is that all sides learn — the customer’s developers get more direct experience coding in OCI, the customer’s executive management gets needed projects initiated that can be evolved to eventual deployment, and Oracle gets valuable engineering feedback that can help improve OCI. There are many times during this discussion with Monica Godoy where she expresses her passion for the Oracle Application Express (APEX) technology and also the APEX community. I met both of them in Brussels in February 2020 during the preFOSDEM 2020 MySQL Days. This is where the MySQL community comes together for two days of intensive technical sessions before going to the premier European open source conference — FOSDEM (Free and Open Source Software Developers' European Meeting). Yes, there's that much content to deal with so you need a conference before the conference!
Before the pandemic, Oracle used to send many engineers from various open source projects at the company to FOSDEM to participate in the event and to engage the other 20K developers from around the world there. And the MySQL team at Oracle was always a big part of the conference.

In the absence of having a magical crystal ball, it requires amongst other things, experience, vision, creativity, good judgement, recognizing patterns beyond the obvious and a track record. When I think of making predictions, or forecasting the future, I am thinking of people who can determine inflection points. This is not an easy task, and there are some people like serial entrepreneurs who do it better than others. #370: Complexity Revisited: Software and Safety
In a 5-month period beginning in late 2018, two Boeing 737 Max aircraft crashed in similar circumstances, killing 343 people. Investigators determined that in each case the crash was caused by problems with flight control software unique to that aircraft model. All 737 Max aircraft were subsequently grounded, where they remain, and the story remains in the news. This podcast, a rebroadcast of a show published on March 21, 2018, looks at the increasing complexity in software, and at what can be done to reduce that complexity and increase safety.

The good news is that the US Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts 24% growth in software developer jobs through 2026. That’s well above average. The outlook for database administrators certainly isn’t bleak, but with projected job growth of 11% to 2026, that’s less than half the growth projected for developers. Job growth for system administrators, at 6% through 2016, is considered average by the BLS. So while the news is positive all around, developers certainly have an advantage.
