Scarlet Udaan: Sanya Sharma #63
We couldn’t have picked a more informative episode to end our season with. Sanya Sharma is a 19-year-old law student based in the UK and the founder of the global organization Scarlet Udaan. The aim of the organization is to raise awareness of Female Genital Mutilation. The team has members from different parts of the world including India, UK, Indonesia, US, Canada and many more.The World Health Organization estimates that 200 million females around the world have undergone FGM/C. The name Scarlet Udaan, comes from the word 'Scarlet'- a brilliant red colour which signifies the strength in one's womanhood; and the word 'Udaan'- is a Hindi word which means 'to soar' or 'to fly': It symbolizes freedom and the limitless possibilities that exist for an individual. Through the organization, she hopes to bring awareness of Female Genital Mutilation and the impact it has on the lives of females belonging to different communities all around the world. She believes, together, we can end Female Genital Mutilation.This is Sanya sharing an untold story and we hope you'll listen.

Amsterdam Ave.: Pooja Tripathi #62
Pooja Tripathi is a first-generation Indian American actor, filmmaker and violinist based in New York City. She grew up in Pittsburgh & NYC, and studied at Carnegie Mellon University.
Pooja is the co-creator of new Dutch American dramedy series Amsterdam Ave. which was created by a 90% female crew and takes place in The Netherlands and NYC. Having a predominantly female crew was an intentional choice as she believes, the industry does not provide enough opportunities for women in filmmaking.
Even though Pooja has played the violin since she was three, Pooja never thought herself to be an artist. She grew up thinking she would have a stable corporate career and dabble in arts as a hobby. After working at corporate jobs in top fashion houses, Pooja realized she was unhappy. She found the courage to quit and get into filmmaking with the help of her friend Dionne. Today, Pooja considers herself an artist first, and this is Pooja's charming story of letting the artist in her shine!

Think homeopathy first: Yashasvi Jhangiani #61
Yashi, as she's popularly known, is a Connecticut based homeopath with nearly three decades of experience in the medical field. Yashi's way of practising homeopathy is a bit different from the traditional way. She strives to empower and educate families that are looking for a safer, alternative way to good health. She does this by teaching them the basics of homeopathy so that they can manage everyday ailments themselves.
Over the years, Yashi has helped hundreds of families and thousands in need. Her practice was non-profit until 2017. The fee was to "Pay it forward" by supporting non-profits close to her heart. Since 2018, new families have been paying for her time, while #payitforward families that are part of the Homeopathic community continue to donate instead of consultation fees.

Culturally Ours: Karthika Gupta #60
Karthika Gupta's career has been a wonderful mix of corporate, technology and creativity. Currently based in Chicago, but having lived and worked in many parts of the world, she was always surrounded by so many amazing people who brought a rich cultural diversity into her life. And these interactions led her to want to know more about not just her culture but about other cultures too.After a successful 15 year career in banking, finance and management, she turned to photography 8 years ago as a way to creatively share compelling real-life stories for her clients. A Shamanic Life: Anahata Meher #59
Anahata Meher is a Shamanic practitioner based in Goa. Before finding Shamanism, she was a city brat living a comfortable life with no worries or ambition. Despite having all the comforts, Anahata found that she was angry all the time, to the extent that her husband suggested she seek help to manage the anger. She sought help from a hypnotherapist, but it was a trip to the mountains that truly changed her life. It was here that her journey of seeking began and led her to Shamanism which she believes changed her very existence.
Shamanism recognises and honours three worlds: the lower world, where one connects with mother Earth and the animal spirit guides. The middle world, which is one's reality and the upper world, which is the home of the celestial and spirit guides; a Shaman travels through these three levels to heal. One experiences healing through energies present in nature like plants, humans, crystals and stones. Surge for Water: Marita Peters #58
Water is the most important natural resource in the world; without it, life cannot exist. 2.1 billion people across the world lack access to clean drinking water. Marita Peters, the Executive Director of Surge UAE chapter, is determined to change that.
Marita's childhood friend, Shilpa Alva, is the founder of Surge. Growing up together, they had a shared dream to do something that makes a difference in the world. Both Shilpa and Marita shared similar lives growing up. They were NRI kids who mostly visited India only during the holidays. It was during these trips they realized that running water was not available to everyone and the thought that they must do something about it occurred to them. It was this thought that later led to Shilpa setting up Surge, a non-profit organization that focusses on providing clean water and sanitation in water-stressed areas.
Since its inception Surge has impacted over a million people across the world. Marita shares her wonderful story of fulfilling a childhood dream with her best friend, Shilpa and how their bond is now enriching the lives of so many across the world.

Fateh: Dipti Mehta #57
Dipti Mehta is a scientist, entrepreneur, writer and an award-winning artist based in New York. She grew up in a conservative, patriarchal family in India. But she was not one to keep quiet; she questioned everything, especially why she was treated differently from her brothers.
At twelve, an All India Radio executive discovered Dipti at an elocution competition and offered her a ten-minute slot on the radio. She used this opportunity to share her budding feminist ideas.Since then, Dipti has used art for social transformation, for being the voice of those who have none, and towards changing the deeply patriarchal patterns that exist in our culture.
Dipti shares her inspiring story of understanding patriarchy, breaking social stereotypes, and purposefully championing gender equality.

Unfair is lovely too: Anu Kumar #56
“Don’t you have long sleeves you can wear while you’re outside?”, “I brought a new brightening face scrub for you to try.”, “Try not to stay in the sun too long, you’ll get dark." South Asian kids listen to these kinds of comments all the time. And not from outsiders but people close to our hearts. This was also the case for Anu Kumar. Born in New York to Indian Immigrant parents, from Southern India, Anu moved and was raised in Knoxville, TN. Anu was confused when she realized that people, who are like her of Indian descent didn't like their dark skin and people who are from around the world who have much lighter skin wanted to become darker. Anu shares her story of growing up in almost two different worlds, one where her skin colour was appreciated, even desired—the other where she was constantly reminded that it was something undesirable and in need of being fixed. She talks about how she overcame Colorism, identifying and accepting her inner thoughts on this subject and working on being comfortable in her own skin.

The Ex-Files: Vandana Shah #54
Today, Vandana Shah is amongst the top divorce lawyers in India. The story of how she got there is unique. Vandana was in an abusive marriage and only got out of it because her in-laws pushed her out of the house one night. With only 10 dollars in her account, Vandana rebuilt her life taking every opportunity that came her way.
When she found that she was running around in circles as a litigant, because of her limited understanding of the law, she decided to study law. She chose to document her journey as a litigant in a book to help others who may be in similar circumstances. The book, The Ex-Files: The Story of my Divorce is a best-seller and currently part of the judicial college syllabus.
Vandana shares her story of triumphing over adversity while keeping a positive outlook towards life and inspiring other victims of domestic abuse find the courage to rebuild their lives.

Bhavna has a career in IT, but her passion lies in connecting people through food. She's the author of the blog, Just a Girl from Aamchi Mumbai which featured in the top twenty blogs in Perth.
Her most recent venture, The Modern Desi, a culinary experience represents both, the girl holding on to her culture and roots in India and the newer her as she embraces and grows in a different culture in Australia.
Bhavna's birth-home, India and home of choice, Australia are different at various levels. Yet, both societies have strikingly similar views towards those choosing to be childfree. Suzanna grew up surrounded by nature and by all things natural in Munnar, India. When she moved to the city, she quickly adapted to the city life of access and "use and throw" mentality. Womaniya on Road Trips: Priti Vishwakarma #51
Priti Raman Vishwakarma's love for travel began after her first solo trip to Himachal Pradesh in India. Despite her initial apprehensions, she found the courage to travel alone, and her life was forever changed. She hopes that by sharing her experience, others are encouraged to travel more. That's how Womaniya on road trips, a travel company for women, led by Priti began. Priti has Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy and was advised by the doctor to stop travelling after she had a seizure at an airport on one of her trips. She weighed her options and decided not to give up on her dream of travelling. Now, Priti briefs her co-travellers about her condition and how to handle the seizure if it happens. She continues to be amazed by the support and encouragement she receives from other travellers while doing what she loves.

Schizophrenist: Reshma Valliappan #50
Reshma is an artist-activist advocating and supporting several issues from mental health and sexuality to human rights.
Val Resh as she's popularly known was diagnosed with schizophrenia at twenty-two. Since then she's had many diagnoses. She does not let these labels define her and calls herself the schizophrenist, combining the words schizophrenia and artist-activist.
She gives us an insight into what it is like to live in our society with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, in her book Fallen, Standing. Forgiveness and Acceptance: Mehek Gidwani #43
Addiction is a progressive mental illness. Mehek Gidwani shares her story of addiction, recovery and now living a sober life. She was born and raised in Hong Kong and had her first interaction with alcohol and drugs at the tender age of thirteen. The drug didn't seem like a drug. It was a natural thing found around the house. What started as a fun, exhilarating experience and way to fit in with friends quickly progressed to full-blown addiction by the age of fifteen.
She was torn, one part of her wanting help, wanting to get better, and the other part was utterly fighting and trying to push it away. Rehab became a huge turning point in her life. Her values, how she viewed the world, her relationship with herself completely changed and she was able to forgive herself and come to a place of acceptance. Today she works as a Holistic Addiction Recovery Coach supporting people who are in recovery from addiction.

No More Nirbhaya: Janani Viswanathan #42
Janani Viswanathan from Sunnyvale, California was on a break from work a couple of years ago, and that lead to her becoming the co-creator of Project NoMoreNirbhaya in Chennai, India. This initiative aims to create safer public spaces for women. Their team teaches free self-defence sessions for school and college girls. They've also conducted gender sensitivity training for bus drivers and conductors and safety audits to rate which parts of the city as safe or unsafe. She also works as a Crisis Counselor at Crisis Text Line- helping people in crisis over text and is an active domestic violence advocate at a South Asian organization based in Bay Area and a certified California Domestic Violence Survivor Counselor. She hopes more people will be encouraged to support organizations that are taking action to make India a safer place for all.

Too Blessed to be Stressed: Gulshan Kavarana #41
Gulshan Kavarana is the founding member of SFS - Special Families Support group - a support group for families with children with special needs and an art mentor at Mawaheb, an art studio for adults with special needs. Zara, her younger daughter, was diagnosed with Dravet's syndrome before the age of one. At the time Gulshan desperately tried to seek advice from others who may have been in a similar situation like hers, but she couldn't find a network. So she set up SFS, a place where others like her could find support, seek advice and even have fun. Gulshan shares her journey of how she got from denial to acceptance and why she thinks she's now at a stage, where she considers her life to be too blessed to be stressed.

Wings of Angelz: Shobhika Kalra #35
Shobhika Kalra is a campaigner for wheelchair accessibility. She was thirteen when she was diagnosed with Friedreich's Ataxia, a degenerative disease affecting the nervous system and movement. By the age of eighteen, she was bound to a wheelchair.
She says, "Disability is not something that can stop people". She has facilitated building over 1100 ramps in Dubai improving accessibility for the many residents there. She hopes to build ramps in India so it can be more inclusive of people with different abilities.

Maithili Appalwar is a 22-year-old senior at Georgia Tech. She and her team won the People's Choice Award at the Ideas to Serve Competition hosted by Georgia Tech's Institute for Leadership and Entrepreneurship and they used the money as their pilot fund for Thrive.
Maithili is passionate about improving mental health in low-resource communities which is why she started Thrive with two friends.
Thrive hopes to be a platform that helps improve student mental health in India including mental health literacy workshops delivered to students and teachers by Thrive facilitators and daily meditation and gratitude journaling activities delivered by trained teachers.

A girl’s faith: Karina Calver #27
Karina Calver is a survivor of incest. She shares her story of enduring rape and how she has turned her life around to become the woman she is today.
The silence that surrounds incest survivors can make them feel isolated, and Karina hopes by sharing her story others will know they are not alone.
Survivors are all around us, among our friends, at school, at work, places of worship and it's likely we don't know they are survivors. The taboo around the subject makes it hard for them to share their stories and for others to understand the impact this can have. Karina wants to bring the conversation out in the open where nothing is a taboo anymore so that victims do not need to be scared to speak their truth, fear seeming inadequate and not being an equal.
She wants others to know that they are capable of building a life of their choice filled with love, happiness and surrounded by people who are willing to help every step of the way.

Prasha S Dutra is a is a mechanical engineer currently working as a Quality Manager in a manufacturing facility in Rhode Island. She grew up in a small neighbourhood of Delhi in India and was always interested in the science of things. Prasha credits this curiosity to her upbringing. Growing up her father encouraged her to watch How it's made on the discovery channel, and she observed her mum be the unconventional one as the only working mum.
She shares her story as she wants more girls and women to have the opportunities life offered her because of her education and hopes more mums and dads are persuaded to encourage their daughters to follow careers in the STEM (Science, technology, engineering, mathematics) fields.

Sandi Saxsena, our guest today played the role of a supporting spouse in all aspects of her family except financial planning. She was focused on the children as they grew up and her husband met all the wants and needs of the family. That is, until one day, they hit financial challenges.
Sandi had to step out into the working world for the first time at 44 with no prior work experience. Sandi did not let that stop her. She kept her faith and focus on finding a job, and she did as a financial consultant. Now 20 plus years on, she has gone on to pay off the debts and secure her future. She is completely independent and lives life on her terms.
She believes every woman whether one is working or not is responsible for their financial future and she shares her insights on how one can start on that path.

Always loved, never forgotten, forever missed: Sheetal Mulani #23
Our guest today Sheetal Mulani shares her story of rebuilding her life after her son Mohit passed away at the age of 21. The loss of a child regardless of age is one of the most devastating experiences a parent can face. One is never going to stop feeling the loss, and that gap is never going to be replaced. Sheetal and her family have had to find a way to love and care for each other so their family can survive despite missing a very precious part.
Mohit was diagnosed with anxiety and ADHD while he was away at university and put on medication, which Sheetal believes changed the person Mohit was. She was unaware of his diagnosis or treatment until it was too late. She hopes in sharing her story more parents become aware of some of the changes to watch out for in their children so more children can be safe.

For our season finale, we're talking about a subject that is mainly Indian- Joint families, an arrangement where many generations bound by a common relationship live together in the same household. It’s common to see this kind of living arrangement in Indian families residing outside India as well. Some of us may have grown in one, and others married into one. Joining us in our conversation today is Aashna Mulgaonkar who was born and grew up in one of the largest joint families in India. At its peak, 150 members lived together in the same house - the Mhamai Kamat family in Goa.

She moved to a new country with her kids when the youngest one was just three months old and her older daughter was four. Sanky, as she is lovingly known, decided like so many of us do, with a move and new additions to the family, to take a break from her job.
When she was ready to go back to her career, she found that it was not an option. The laws of the country demanded that her practice is current. The break meant she could not continue as a psychotherapist, a job she is passionate about and loves.
