Target Audience
This activity is targeted toward primary care and geriatric healthcare providers and advanced providers.
Statement of Need
A common chronic condition seen in the primary care setting is atrial fibrillation. The management of this disease can be complicated with many facets. Providers should be aware of the risk factors of untreated a-fib; as well as how to recognize, screen and manage the condition. Additionally, providers should incorporate the latest screening and treatment options for optimal care of their patients, minimizing their risks of complications from A-Fib, including stroke.
Objectives
At the conclusion of this offering, the participant will be able to:
* Discuss the prevalence of atrial fibrillation.
* List the risk factors of atrial fibrillation and monosymptomatic atrial fibrillation.
* Describe management strategies of atrial fibrillation.
* Identify when specialty care is needed for the management of atrial fibrillation.

Statement of Need
Firearm injuries are now the leading cause of death in persons 0-24 years old, surpassing auto accidents. Yet, providers may not consistently ask parents/guardians about firearm ownership as a part of the wellness/preventative exam. Or, they may not be comfortable addressing firearm ownership and safety. Research and statistics have concluded that children who live in a home with a firearm are at increased risk of death by suicide or unintentional injury compared with children who live in a home without firearms. This podcast will discuss the guidelines for safe gun ownership as well as effective communication strategies in addressing gun ownership with parents/guardians as well as adolescents. The American Academy of Pediatrics has issued guidelines for safe gun ownership that will be reviewed as well as guidelines for providers.
Objectives
At the conclusion of this offering, the participant will be able to:
* Discuss the epidemiology of firearm injuries in children.
* Discuss the current trends in intentional and unintentional firearm injuries in children.
* Describe effective strategies to discuss firearm safety with families.
* Review the evidence-based practices to reduce the risks of gun-related injuries to children and teens; including screening recommendations and firearm storage/safety.

Statement of Need
When patients are being treated by multiple providers and/or by a variety of physicians, The caregivers may not be aware of the complete prescription listing a patient has been prescribed. This is especially true if the patient sees providers in multiple healthcare systems, in that a centralized list may not be available in the electronic medical record. These circumstances may lead to potentially inappropriate prescribing (over-, mis- or underprescribing). Additionally, physicians/providers may not routinely do a medication review with patients that are at risk of polypharmacy.
Objectives
At the conclusion of this offering, the participant will be able to:
1. Define polypharmacy; highlighting the prevalence.
2. List the factors that contribute to polypharmacy.
3. Describe the risk factors of polypharmacy.
4. Review effective strategies for deprescribing of medications.

Statement of Need
A recent study released indicated that approximately 35% of the population is Kentucky is obese; putting Kentucky in the top 10 list for obesity in the US. The negative effects of obesity on a patient's health increases decreases their quality of life, increases co-morbidities and risk of early death; therefore it is important for providers to be knowledgeable about viable surgical treatment options so that these can be discussed with patients.
This program will provide those that listen an overview of the different bariatric surgical procedure. This will include the indications, contraindications as well as patient outcomes. This information will give providers information necessary to advice patients on viable surgical options for weight management.

At the conclusion of this offering, the participant will be able to:
1. Discuss the patient selection process / criteria for bariatric surgery.
2. Describe different surgical options for weight management; including criteria, indications, contraindications and outcomes.

Statement of Need
Suicide is a major public health concern and the second leading cause of death for adolescents. Research suggests that many patients that commit suicide had seen a health care provider within two months preceding the event; yet, research also indicates that pediatricians may not feel adequately trained to manage behavioral health complaints, including suicidality. These factors reinforce the need for practitioners to screen patients for imminent suicidal risk. However, even if a screening assessment is utilized routinely, providers may not be fully comfortable managing a patient presenting an identified risk. (Adolescent suicide: what can pediatricians do? Chronic pain is one of the most common reasons that patients see their physician. A report by the Institute of Medicine indicated that one in three Americans suffer from chronic pain. Therefore, it is important for providers to understand key factors in treating patients with pain that would affect diagnosis and treatment plans. Additionally, providers should be aware of effective nonpharmacological and pharmacology treatment options as well as the latest guidelines in the use of opioids for chronic pain management.
