Talking Luft! with Svein Tuft. Ep. 17
Play

He almost needs no introduction. Svein Tuft. Man. Myth. Legend.

He’s a Canadian mountain man, ex pro and teammate, and most of all, a good mate of mine.

You heard from him here on the pod last year; telling epic stories from bike packing days, before he became a pro bike rider and eventually went on to wear the Pink Jersey at the Giro d’Italia.

If you haven’t listened to that episode, Sveino’s Journey, it’s the perfect place to start before you hear him Talking some Luft.

He’s now retired from pro cycling and is back to just enjoying riding his bike in true Sveino fashion – bike packing trips in the mountains, as far and long as he can go.

We recorded this up in Andorra after a 3 day trip in the mountains and it was the perfect send off.

Cheers to the good times!

This is the last Talking Luft for 2020 as I take a break from the bike and podcast for the off season. Join us back here again in February for an all new season of Talking Luft.

And stay tuned to The Cycling Podcast next week for my last Life in the Peloton episode for the year, where Svein turns the mic on me and I tell a little of my story.

But for now, enjoy this episode with Sveino.

Cheers guys,

Mitch

Episode 69: Winter Riding -- Tips and Tricks from Laura and Ted King
Your Guide for a Great Winter Ride! This is a special one, welcome to King of the Ride podcast. Here we have return guest/sometimes-co-host Laura King and Ted talk about how to optimize your cold weather riding. You asked, we answered. After more than 1000 questions came pouring in, Laura and I summarized them and answer them today in this podcast. Here in Vermont, where the sun rises at lunchtime and sets a few minutes later, we need to make the most of our riding window and that takes lots of hardware, software, and just the right equipment. Here are some products mentioned in this podcast: Velocio is the only clothing we use. From stifling hot to frigid cold, there is NO better clothing out there. Alternating piping hot Ginger Mapleaid and Lemon Tea Mapleaid from UnTapped in a vacuum bottle is a definite. Bar Mitts are our dropbar bike hand covering of choice, now with Extreme Cold models. 45NRTH is our go-to for winter riding boots. Their Ragnarok are good MTB shoes for the slush and their Wolfgar are great in the deep frozen tundra. We also use their Cobrafist for arctic riding on a flat bar bike. Planet Bike SpeedEZ are the fenders currently on my bike. SKS Xtra Dry fender is currently on Laura's bike. Rene Herse Hurricane Ridge tires when I need some tread. Otherwise their Barlow Pass or Snoqualmie Pass are totally fine -- wide and supple. 45NRTH Dillinger 5 are 5" studded tires for fat biking. More questions? Send them to @iamtedking or @lauracameronking.

Ep. 62 - Kait boyle, FKT on the kokopelli
On the morning of Christmas Eve 2018 Kait Boyle was at the height of her ultra endurance racing career, having won the 24 hour World Championship in 2018 and set a new record on the AZT 300. Her life would take an unexpected turn later that day when she was involved in a horrific vehicular accident that left her with a long list of injuries and a long path to recovery. Like many of you, I watch her social media feed for months as she dedicated herself to rehabilitation and ultimately back to fitness. * * * Almost a 2 years, and a pandemic later, she finally found herself at the top podium again. This time in the form of an FKT on the Kokopelli Trail. On Nov. 6th, 2020 Lael Wilcox, Kurt Refsnider, and Kait all met in Moab at the start line of the Kokopelli, each of them on ITT's with FKT's on the mind. Kait was able to finish with a time of 13 hrs, 7 mins, which was good enough to beat the long standing time set by Rebecca Rush by 25 minutes. In doing so, she answered 2 years of questions and uncertainty. She was equally rewarded for her hard work, perseverance, and PATIENCE. As a personal fan, I remember cringing seeing the gruesome pics from her crash and injuries. It was hard to watch, I can't imagine how hard it was to live. * * Pictures courtesy of Rugile Kaladyte In addition to her accomplishments on the bike she is also the Co-Founder of Bikepacking Roots, which supports and advances bikepacking, the growth of a diverse bikepacking community, and access to and the conservation of the landscapes and public lands through which we ride. Her contributions on and off the bike are both impressive and valuable to this community that we all love. It was great to share in this milestone with her and hear about her journey over the past couple of years. Kait, congrats on the FKT, and we look forward to rooting for you in future races. You can learn more about Kait on her website or follow her on social media.
