UFYB 169: Misconceptions about Thought Work & Mindset Coaching
Play • 38 min

There are a lot of misunderstandings about life coaching out there - that coaching is about gaslighting and spiritual bypassing, that it’s about learning how to “fix” yourself on your own, that it’s only for privileged people. In today’s podcast, I break down the 5 biggest misconceptions about mindset coaching to reveal what coaching is really about: taking control of your experience of the world and generating more love and compassion for yourself and others.

Kate Kennedy
Pussycat Dull
This week, Kate reads from listener-submitted stories about the embarrassing (and now hilarious) ways in our youth that we tried to make people jealous and/or acutely aware of how well we're doing following a romantic rejection. From the classic "sorry wrong IM" all the way to a full John Tucker Must Die reenactment, these stories represent the good, the bad, and the delightfully cringy of Livin La Vida Four Loko in the mid-2000s. But first, Kate discusses some broader thoughts on mid-aughts media & pop culture and how it influenced her 'hot girl' days, then her sister Kelly joins her to discuss her participation in an MLM, Valentine's stories, myspace, and more; followed by the two peppering in their bad dating stories as they listen through listeners' quests to go from dull to Pussycat Doll in peak "Don't Cha" culture. 121: EPISODE 121 - "Pre-Grieving" is Stealing Your Moments
Today on the pod we tackle one of the biggest obstacles to human personal peace - pre-grieving. Pre-grieving is when we worry about future events (and the pain and suffering connected to them) to such an extent that we steal our ability to be present in the moment, and actually enjoy our lives. It is a problem to some extent for all people, but especially for those of us who are prone to overthinking and micro-analyzing life. Join me for a discussion that may open some willingness in you to examine your pre-grieving, and hopefully offer a compelling argument to let this habit go. XO n. Who Cares? (Part 4): Care During COVID
Caregiving has always been hard work, and heart work. It has always been challenging, rewarding, grueling and life-giving. It has always been work worth doing, and work whose worth is challenged, or hard to quantify. And adding COVID to the mix…didn’t help. This episode is filled with stories from caregivers; people who were thrust into this role by COVID, or found the role further complicated by COVID. It is a reminder that you are not alone, even when you are bone-achingly lonely. An piece of recognition and appreciation for all of you. A few additional things: Our friends at Still Kickin have *two* upcoming caregiver workshops to help you find connection and support. Extremely Achievable Family Traditions
What are some small traditions we can lean on right now to create more joy and meaning for our families? We’re talking LITTLE. Preferably free. Not exhausting. Super fun. Lifetime of memories created. Our listener Lee inspired this topic in our Facebook group:  What about an episode about fun or special traditions for the rest of the year? When I was growing up, the “birthday person” always got breakfast in bed. I’ve brought the tradition to my own family as an adult, and it’s such a fun and special way to start the day. I’ve been trying to build more traditions for my young family (my kids are 3 and 6), especially during the pandemic, since we haven’t seen our extended family much, and a lot of our other markers are missing. In this episode we discuss some of our (and our listeners’) favorite family traditions. A few Rules of Traditions we discovered while recording this episode: Giving the ordinary a special name, song, day of the week is part of what makes it a tradition. Pizza Friday! Porch Popsicle Time! It’s all in the branding.  Traditions are like leprechauns: if you go looking for one, you probably won’t find it, but you can tell when one has appeared. Keep your eyes and ears open for fun moments that can become traditions simply by repeating them. Limitations are where the ingenuity– and the fun– comes in. What Rube Goldberg creation can be made exclusively with what’s in this junk drawer? What famous painting can we recreate using old bedsheets?  This moment we’re all in is tough. It’s also a crucible where family traditions might be formed. Even thinking about tradition-making has lifted our spirits– the idea that we can find “little fun” that might somehow become what will be remembered of this year we’ve all spent mostly at home.  * Leave us a rating or review in your favorite podcast app! * Join us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/whatfreshhellcast * Instagram: https://instagram.com/whatfreshhellcast * YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/WhatFreshHellPodcast * Pinterest: https://pinterest.com/whatfreshhellcast * Twitter: https://twitter.com/WFHpodcast * questions and feedback: info@whatfreshhellpodcast.com Learn more about your ad choices. 250: How to Build Empathy and Improve Relationships
One of the biggest complaints I hear from clients is, “I wish my partner/parent/friend/whoever would be more empathetic!” We often look down on or get frustrated with those we don’t feel are empathetic enough, but empathy isn’t a trait you either have or you don’t...or a trait that makes someone good or bad. Like any healthy habit, it’s a skill we learn...and anyone can learn it if they want to! Everyone wants to be heard and understood, and this is why empathy is such a beautiful skill in life: it’s a tool that helps us connect more deeply with others and show them we care. In this episode, I’m giving you four simple steps that you can use to begin practicing and building empathy with any relationship in your life! Listen to discover: * The definition of empathy * Four simple steps to build empathy * How to get started with feeling emotions * Things you can ask the other person to show you care * Why showing empathy is different than prying When you practice empathy, you open your own heart and emotional body. You deepen connection with others but also yourself! Being able to show empathy is deeply connected to our ability to feel our own emotions. And since feeling emotions and being present are core parts of The Adult Chair, as you do your own work and live in your Adult Chair more often, don’t be surprised when you find that empathy begins to come more naturally. It’s all part of being healthy! “If you don’t listen well to others and automatically go into “fix it” mode, you may need to brush up on your empathy.” - Michelle Chalfant “Offering empathy to another human being will get you much further than fixing them.” - Michelle Chalfant “Deep listening with empathy can change someone.” - Michelle Chalfant “Empathy is a skill that can be learned.” - Michelle Chalfant Resources TAC Circles https://theadultchair.com/taccircles/ (Previously “TAC Gatherings”) More Adult Chair The Adult Chair Website https://theadultchair.com The Adult Chair Membership https://theadultchair.com/membership/ The Adult Chair Workshop https://theadultchair.com/events/ The Adult Chair Coaching Certification https://theadultchair.com/certification-program/ TAC Circles https://theadultchair.com/taccircles/ (Previously “TAC Gatherings”) Stay Connected Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/michelle.chalfant Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MichelleChalfantFanPage/ The Adult Chair Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/theadultchair/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/Michellechalfant *** EPISODE CREDITS: If you like this podcast and are thinking of creating your own, consider talking to my producer, Danny Ozment.
