EP. 24: When We Feel We Aren’t Enough (with Laura Smith)
Play • 32 min

We all experience life-defining moments. Some of those moments can be good and life-changing while other moments are not so good. What happens when we allow those not-so-good moments to negatively define our identities? Speaker and best-selling author Laura Smith joins Elisa and Eryn to share ways in which we can learn to overcome the lies that we’ve believed and focus on God’s life-changing and freeing truth.

Bio of guest:

Laura Smith is an avid storyteller through her books, blog posts, and public speaking. Her recent book How Sweet the Sound focuses on the beauty and truth that come from Scripture-inspired hymns. Along with being a wife and mom, Laura’s hope is to use her writing and public speaking to help others discover the identity that God has instilled in each of us.

Notes and Quotes:

  • “I think it’s so interesting how, you know, you can grow up thinking one way about your family life, and then you step into this awareness of what it really is.”
  • “He loves us for exactly who we are, because He created us in His image—because He created us!”
  • “In college, I had my Bible. I would read it every day, then I would put it under my pillow and go do whatever the heck I wanted. I believed in God, and I loved him, but I didn’t live like it.”
  • “It was some sort of lie that I started to believe when I was younger, that if I do these things, then ‘this’ will make ‘this’ true.”
  • “I am trying to honor the fact that forgiveness and trust are not the same thing.”
  • “I can forgive [my dad] and be kind to him, but I don’t have to trust him and let him into my safe spaces.”
  • “We tend to think that when we come to know Jesus that everything is just ‘BING’ and resolved and wrapped up in this box with a pretty bow on it. And real life is often: God promises and does meet the desires of our hearts. Sometimes it’s now, sometimes it’s  later, sometimes it’s not really in this lifetime.”
  • Three resounding themes: God is almighty. He loves us unconditionally. He will never leave us.
  • “So many of us want to throw out the pain in our lives; the hardness of our lives; the embarrassing, depleting, revealing in our lives; and think, ‘Okay, now God can come in, and now He can do something with me.’”
  • “God planted good in the soil of your pain.”
  • “We have to really focus on who we are listening to for our identity.”
  • Three ways to stay in the truth that God created me as a masterpiece: Read the Bible every day; pray every day “Who do you see me as?”; hang out with core people you can trust and confide in.

Episode 12: Prayers That Will Drastically Change Your Life
We've been on such a fruitful journey on this podcast. We've learned that prayer is the way we communicate with the Maker of the Universe, and He not only hears us, but He also responds. We've learned that through prayer, we access healing, wisdom, discernment, peace, protection, joy, and so much power we could never experience on our own. On our last podcast in this series, we share specific prayers that can drastically change your life. We also close out this series by praying together over these areas so that you can start experiencing the benefit of prayer today. Key Takeaways: • If changing our thoughts from negative to positive can turn our day from good to bad, they also have to power to direct the course of our lives. • Our Heavenly Father is ready and willing to guide and direct our steps and provide us with His wisdom and discernment to make the right decisions. • Even when we are weary and weak, the Lord is willing and ready to grant us His strength to surrender to the things we think I can't do or be. 140: How to Focus When You are Multi-Passionate
Do you have multiple businesses or lots of business ideas? Are you struggling with figuring out how to focus when you are multi-passionate and enjoy many different types of endeavors? Have you ever gone on a trip and felt like there’s no way you could do all the activities you want to do in the time you’re there? This is similar to how we often feel as multi-passionate Christian women. We have so many ideas and so much we want to accomplish, and it can be really hard to narrow down and focus on one thing. In this episode, I want to walk you through a process that I’ve used for myself to learn how to focus even when you have lots of ideas and passions you could pursue. This will be especially helpful if you are an entrepreneur or if you have business ideas, as I’ll be focusing on this from a business angle. For the full show notes for this episode, go to estherlittlefield.com/episode140. 2 problems with trying to promote multiple businesses: * It’s very challenging to try and build or grow more than one business because it's hard for people to know who to refer to you. * We can spread ourselves too thin and end up being ineffective leaders. How to Focus When You are Multi-Passionate: * Step 1: List out all your ideas * Step 2: Become self-aware * Step 3: Put it all before God * Step 4: Ask yourself: what would you really love to do? * Step 5: Get input from trusted mentors or advisors * Step 6: Run your options through the ‘ideal business’ filter * Step 7: Decide and take action Action Step: Join the free Communicate & Connect Challenge. This challenge will help you to communicate effectively about what you do - your business or your passion project AND connect with the types of people who need to hear what you have to offer. We’ll work through this together so you feel confident when someone asks you what you do, have the words to create curiosity instead of confusion, and can keep the conversation going to lead people down the path of working with you!
