EP. 23: Freedom to Have Fun
Play • 23 min

“Adulting” can often make us feel bogged down by jobs, parenting, and other community responsibilities, and it can be difficult finding time to “play.” Elisa and Eryn look at the importance of loosening up and having fun, and why that needs to be a priority for all of us. It’s not a waste of time! In fact, we need to be intentional about it.

Notes and Quotes:

  • “Why is it that when we get older we quit playing?”
  • “I can think of all the other priorities in my life, but play is not one of them. It feels selfish.”
  • “Maybe another reason we don’t play is because we need to give up a little control.”
  • “The hardest time of my life to play was when I was mothering young children. Because they are always playing, and you want them to, but you don’t have any time to play.”
  • “Try to enjoy play with [your kids], and then try to ask for a break. Ask for a sitter for the kids and go out for girl time or date night. And do something silly!”
  • “I think sometimes we think it’s reckless, and really it’s being faithful to play.”
  • Popcorn ideas of how we can begin to play: Do something you have never done! Take a pottery class. Learn to knit. Try oil painting. Be present. Play with your kids. Try to say, “Yes.” Get out in nature. Car karaoke.
  • “Play is for the very young. And when we are young, we aren’t scared to play. To play as an adult is to become yielded and vulnerable and open and exposed, and that is dangerous. We have learned we can be hurt in that condition.”
  • “Doesn’t God delight in that vulnerability when we expose ourselves to His love?”

Jesus is the Center
Like we said at the beginning of the week, this life is marked by a single choice: who or what will we center our lives around? Today we will look to the person of Jesus Christ. He is the first and the last; everything was created for him, by him and through him. To center your life around anyone else is futile and empty. As we look to Jesus today, may our eyes be fixed on his eternal goodness and glory. Allow your heart to be stirred in adoration, worship and devotion to the only true King this world has even known. Our Scripture for today comes from Isaiah 9:6, and today's worship is Holy and Anointed One by Vineyard Worship. ________ Last year felt like a wilderness and a desert in many ways. Yet in the midst of the fear, unrest, and anxiety, God moved. In fact, during 2020, over half a million men and women joined the First15 community! With all this growth, we need financial help to propel forward the mission to guide believers all around the world to experience God the first 15 minutes of their day. We’ve set a goal of seeing 221 new monthly donors come on board this first month of 2021. And we want to invite you to give your first gift as a First15 monthly partner today. Episode 12: Prayers That Will Drastically Change Your Life
We've been on such a fruitful journey on this podcast. We've learned that prayer is the way we communicate with the Maker of the Universe, and He not only hears us, but He also responds. We've learned that through prayer, we access healing, wisdom, discernment, peace, protection, joy, and so much power we could never experience on our own. On our last podcast in this series, we share specific prayers that can drastically change your life. We also close out this series by praying together over these areas so that you can start experiencing the benefit of prayer today. Key Takeaways: • If changing our thoughts from negative to positive can turn our day from good to bad, they also have to power to direct the course of our lives. • Our Heavenly Father is ready and willing to guide and direct our steps and provide us with His wisdom and discernment to make the right decisions. • Even when we are weary and weak, the Lord is willing and ready to grant us His strength to surrender to the things we think I can't do or be.
