P-Soupers, this week - the chat with Dr Steve Jones - continues. We touch upon role modelling -in terms of the ripple effect when men disclose how they've sought support for their mental health or volunteered for psychological wellbeing training. We talk about how we must understand and respect the culture of an organisation when considering interventions, that's across the board and particularly for men's mental health. ACT and Authentic Leadership FM
Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 5 Episode 32 of People Soup – it’s Ross McIntosh here.
It's a bit different this week. It's a solo episode, a cup-a-soup if you like. What I want to do is build on the idea I shared earlier this year about having a separate sister podcast of PeopleSoup for leaders. One where they can tune in and really hear about bite sized practical skills that they can use to develop and evolve their own authentic leadership style. So I wanted to present my emerging idea to you all and hopefully get your views.
Think of this as a kind of, discussion paper if you like. I'd love to get your ideas and views on how ACT can support the development and evolution of authentic leadership.
I've called the episode Act and Authentic Leadership FM. And Authentic Leadership FM is the new holding name for what will perhaps be a spin off podcast.

"The Overthinker's Guide to Life" with Andrew Sewell
Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 5 Episode 29 of People Soup – it’s Ross McIntosh here.
And P soupers - that little teaser at the beginning was from the very end of my chat with Andrew Sewell. We'd finished the formal interview and he reflected on my observation of his creativeness coupled with his doubt - when I was coaching him about 8 years ago. Dr Sarah Swan - Coping with Breast Cancer
Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 5 Episode 26 of People Soup – it’s Ross McIntosh here.
P-Soupers - it's a special one this week - over the Summer, me and producer Emma experimented with a couple of live recordings, and our first courageous participant was Dr Sarah Swan - a verified rock chick who has written an extraordinary book called, "Coping with Breast Cancer, how to navigate the emotional impact throughout your journey". It's based upon Sarah's lived experience and her expertise as a clinical psychologist, particularly in the application of ACT.
So in this episode you'll hear how Sarah first got into psychology, the trials of getting onto the clinical training to the point when she was about to give up, how she discovered ACT and then the life-changing, devastating experience, when Sarah was diagnosed with breast cancer. You'll hear my review of the book, Sarah talking about the writing process and how she kept going when she could barely see the screen through the tears. I’m delighted to be back to share part two of my chat with Dr Richard Bennett and Dr Joe Oliver - both clinical psychologists - both legends in their field- they joined me on the show to talk about self-esteem at work. We began by unpacking the concept that’s so popular and Rich and Joe draw upon the evidence to illustrate how self esteem can be quite a narrow and restrictive concept. People might say - "I’ve got high self esteem" or "I’ve got low self esteem" and it can feel quite rigid and inflexible. It can limit our behaviour and impact our whole career and or life. The chaps present their alternative perspective of self-acceptance - which effectively captures the nuanced and multifaceted experience of being a human.

Over the last few days I’ve been feeling a bit adrift and overwhelmed - the enormity of business planning, the complexity of my residency application, improving my Spanish. And as an aside, that’s nothing to do with Blue Monday, which is a nonsense created by marketing folk.
And I’ve also been trying to think of a topic for the next episode, my mind was all over the shop, lots of possibilities, so for inspiration I decided to listen back to my chat with Lou.

I’m going to be having a go at exercising my creativity - experimenting with ways to illustrate my point, which is, that we all live inside our heads - and often - we can assume other people are in their with us - think like us and really ‘get us’.
In my work and life I constantly marvel that workplaces can function, relationships can happen and agreements can be made, because I reckon we can spend a lot of time just assuming that people are thinking just like us. And what’s going on in someone else’s head - can shape how they look at and experience the world and how they show up. And the same applies to us. I combine my thinking with a great exercise from a recent guest - Diana Hill.

He shares the evolution of his approach to his specialism – anxiety, OCD, persistent worry, fears and phobias – which amongst other things combines cognitive behavioural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, exposure therapy and compassion focussed therapy. Reflections on the ACBS UK&ROI Conference 2020

It's a cup a soup this week. In this 10 minute episode you can hear me reflect on how I've used the ACT Diary over a turbulent year. 2020 has certainly delivered for us all on both the uncertainty and anxiety fronts. I've found the diary particularly useful in ensuring that I attend to my own self-care in a whole host of contexts.

It was great to welcome Shane to People Soup. Blimey what an interesting fella.
He's currently a lecturer at Liverpool John Moores University after completing his PhD at the University of Chichester.
Shane's interested in exploring the potential in merging the fields of behavioural analysis and differential psychology. He really set me thinking about a whole host of organisational issues and my stance in the workplace.

We have a chat about Basic Psychological Needs Theory which states that people strive to satisfy three innate needs, namely autonomy, belonging and competence (in every area of life).
* Autonomy - is about the need to feel that our pursuits are self governed and self endorsed. Or in other words, to feel we have control over what we do.
* Belonging - is about being connected socially and feeling integrated into a social group.
* Competence - is about the need to be effective in our efforts; so we feel like we're developing skills and gaining knowledge.
Some researchers called Deci and Ryan assert that needs for competence, relatedness, and autonomy are universal – they are essential, regardless of culture and life domain (Deci and Ryan, 1985b, 2000; Ryan and Deci, 2002).

It's Part 2 of my conversation with Dr Ian Tyndall. He's a cognitive-behavioural psychologist at the University of Chichester and is the head honcho of the Functional Behavioural Science Laboratory. This week – it’s a cuppa soup. A short episode – the lighthouse – it combines a poem I learned at school with a reflection on how we can keep sight of the things that give us meaning in our working lives. We call these qualities that give us meaning, our personal values. It can be difficult, scary and revealing to consider what gives us purpose in our work. To use these qualities as a guide for our behaviour & decisions can be challenging too. I consider my lighthouse – to be beaming out my personal values – when the sea is calm I can see the lamplight but in turbulent times they can disappear.

The conversation continues with a focus on how to introduce the concept of skilfully relating to the content that our minds can produce, which is also known as cognitive defusion. We also how Jaimie uses her experience of the context of the ballet world in a way that is both curious and cautious - she's keen not to make assumptions based upon her own experience. Exploring ACT training with Leo Hepler, Jaimie Persson & Paul Flaxman - Part 1

That's quite a title and this is quite a two parter. I was lucky enough to have the chance to discuss ACT in the workplace with Dr Paul Flaxman, Jaimie Persson and Leo Hepler.
We explore the delivery of training based upon Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in the workplace from three different perspectives. We have Paul Flaxman – together we redesigned an ACT in the workplace training protocol, which was then adapted by our colleague and pal – Jaimie Persson – to deliver to the students at Canada’s National Ballet School. One of the students was dancer – Leo Hepler – our star guest – who came on the show to reflect upon his experiences of receiving ACT training.

A conversation with Nicky Hemmings

What an absolute delight to spend some time chatting with Nicky Hemmings - lead psychologist at Soma Analytics. We discussed evidence based psychology in the workplace and the very new Evidence Based HR Forum set up by Nicky, MaddyScott, Craig Tindall and Professor Rob Briner.
Nicky talks us through the evolution of the Soma App - called Kelaa - how people interact with it - the data it can produce for organisations and the wider support they provide. What I particularly love is the story of how Soma came about through an experience with a friend of the co-founders Christopher Lorenz and Johann Huber.
We reflect on contributing to improvements to mental health at work and Nicky introduces the frog - which is used across the team at Soma - to help them get stuff done. Nicky also gives a glimpse of the research that Soma will be publishing soon - showing improvements across stress, sleep and well-being through use of the Kelaa app.

Ross presents some evidence on gender differences in organisations. Amongst other findings he covers 'Think Manager Think Male' and the glass cliff (where women can be put in precarious leadership positions). Drawing upon a Harvard Business Review he agrees that the route to leadership for women and other minorities is more labyrinthine than a ceiling. He finishes with a paper that suggests it's time to introduce positive discrimination to accelerate gender equality. The take away is a clarion call - to flag micro-behaviours - both good and bad.

Exploring values with Jonny Line

In this episode I speak to my friend, Jonny Line, who is an exciting new voice in organisational psychology.
Jonny begins by reflecting on a particular skill that he draws upon in a variety of scenarios at work and then considers his own experience of using Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT).
He describes the three step approach he has developed to support himself in noticing when he's expressed his core values of self development, creativity, fairness and supportiveness.

We can spend a lot of time on autopilot - research by 2 Harvard University Psychologist found that we can spend about 47% of our waking hours thinking about something other than what we’re doing, and this mind-wandering typically makes us unhappy (Killingsworth & Gilbert, 2010)
“A human mind is a wandering mind, and a wandering mind is an unhappy mind,” Killingsworth and Gilbert write. “The ability to think about what is not happening is a cognitive achievement that comes at an emotional cost.”
