Talk World Radio: Matt Hoh on Running for Election in a Rigged System

This week on Talk World Radio we're speaking with Matt Hoh. In 2009, Matthew Hoh resigned in protest from his post in Afghanistan with the State Department over the U.S. escalation of the war. Prior to his assignment in Afghanistan, Matt had taken part in the U.S. occupation of Iraq. Since his resignation, he has been a peace activist and truth teller. In 2010, Matt was named the Ridenhour Prize Recipient for Truth Telling and, in 2021, he was awarded as a Defender of Liberty by the Committee for the Republic. Matthew is a member of the Board of Directors for the Institute for Public Accuracy, an Advisory Board Member for the Committee to Defend Julian Assange and Civil Liberties, Expose Facts, North Carolina Committee to Investigate Torture, The Resistance Center for Peace and Justice, Veterans For Peace, and World BEYOND War. He is a candidate for U.S. Senate from North Carolina.

Talk World Radio: Myrna Pagan: U.S. Cleanup Effort in Vieques Is a Joke

This week on Talk World Radio, we're speaking with Myrna V. Pagan a longtime activist from Vieques, Puerto Rico, the Colony of the Colony. She is the founder of the Vidas Viequenses Valen movement (Vieques Lives Matter) established by the people of Vieques to continue their struggle for justice when they, after decades of protests and a campaign of nonviolent civil disobedience forced the U.S. Navy to close its bombing range and base on May 1, 2003. The struggle continues now in the cleanup stage of this Super Fund site where for more than 60 years a trillion pounds of explosives and toxic substances were dropped by the Navy and its NATO allies on Vieques creating an environmental nightmare and health crisis.

This week on Talk World Radio we're discussing efforts by local residents to save a mountain in Montenegro from being turned into a military training ground. Milan Sekulović is a journalist and environmental activist. He started to deal with environmental activism after the government of Montenegro declared the mountain Sinjajevina a military training ground. Milan is the son of a farmer and was born and raised on Sinjajevina. Together with other members of the local community, he formed the Save Sinjajevina movement, of which he is currently the president. They have been working for the preservation of the mountain for four years, and so far they have prevented attempts to use heavy weapons on the pastures of Sinjajevina. Kathy's efforts to end wars have led her to living in war zones and prisons over the past 35 years. In 2009 and 2010, Kathy was part of two Voices for Creative Nonviolence delegations which visited Pakistan to learn more about the consequences of U.S. drone attacks. From 2010 - 2019, the group organized dozens of delegations to visit Afghanistan, where they continued learning about casualties of U.S. drone attacks. Voices also helped organize protests at U.S. military bases operating weaponized drone attacks. She is now a co-coordinator of the Ban Killer Drones campaign and serves on the Advisory Board for World BEYOND War.

Alfred W. McCoy is the author of a tremendous new book called To Govern the Globe: World Orders and Catastrophic Change. He also holds the Harrington Chair in History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After earning his Ph.D. in Southeast Asian history at Yale in 1977, his writing has focused on Philippine political history, the history of modern empires, and the covert netherworld of illicit drugs, syndicate crime, and state security. His first book, The Politics of Heroin in Southeast Asia (1972), sparked controversy over the CIA’s attempt to block its publication. His book A Question of Torture: CIA Interrogation, From the Cold War to the War on Terror (2006) provided the historical dimension for the Oscar-winning documentary feature, Taxi to the Darkside.

Stuart Parkinson is Executive Director of Scientists for Global Responsibility. He has been an expert reviewer for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and provided advice to UK negotiators to the UN climate change convention. He then spent a year working for Friends of The Earth, co-ordinating research and policy work highlighting the link between environmental problems and social injustice. Lisa McCrea is an environmental and human rights activist, and the mother of five. She lived on the former George Air Force Base in California from 1987 to 1991. She found out 30 years after first stepping foot on the base that it was and is extremely contaminated with numerous toxic substances, including nuclear waste. She became partially disabled in 1990 and completely disabled in 2003, at the age of 35, as a direct result of her contamination exposure. In 2017, she switched her focus from corporate contamination to military contamination. Jeffrey Sterling, CIA Whistleblower, on What He Now Thinks Was the Purpose of Operation Merlin

Jeffrey Sterling is a former CIA case officer who was convicted of violating the Espionage Act and was in federal prison in Colorado. I don't think that prior to this program Sterling has been asked whether he believes the official purpose of the progam he worked on giving nuclear bomb plans to Iran. Does he really think the purpose of giving obviously flawed bomb-part plans to Iran was to slow down a nuclear weapons program that may not even have existed? Timmon Wallis is the author of Disarming the Nuclear Argument and The Truth About Trident. He has a PhD in Peace Studies from Bradford University in England, and has been working on nuclear disarmament and other peace issues since the 1970s. Most recently, he was Program Manager for Peace and Disarmament for Quakers in Britain, before moving back to Northampton, Massachusetts. He has also been Executive Director of the Nonviolent Peaceforce. As a member of the ICAN (International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons) team at the UN in 2017, Timmon took part in the negotiations which led to the adoption by 122 countries of the Nuclear Ban Treaty and won ICAN the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize. With his new partner, Vicki Elson, he is now running NuclearBan.US, the campaign to get cities and states in the United States to comply with the Nuclear Ban Treaty. Daniel Kovalik on Morgan Freeman and the Plot to Scapegoat Russia
