The Wanderer - Songs of Resistance: Wandering From the Fold
Songs of Resistance: Wandering From the Fold. AKA, Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing. Welcome to another mini series of The Wanderer, this time focused on trying to understand and define worship. Each episode will look at the history of a particular Hymn and its origin story, how it may have roots in Justice and what it may encourage us to participate in today. Further, every episode will end with a recorded version of the song by Tim, to listen to after walking through the song's history.
This week, a well known oft sung Hymn and one of Tim's favorites: "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing." What was Robert Robinson's (Bob) journey? While this isn't a justice oriented song as the others have been, what can we glean? How does scripture in form the lyrics? What's an Ebenezer?? How did his own song come back to minister to himself?
Tim covers some of the history, but not all. Bob had a long journey that was fraught with turmoil. He had a long ministry that many loved but ostracized him at times as well. He was married and had 12(!) kids.
This is the long road.

Reorientation to the Center. This episode, Mike and Tim read an email asking about how to approach 'Church discipline.' Mike takes us on a journey through the 'centered' approach and how 'Church discipline' should look more like a reorientation to the center. Tim asks questions about the church model and how it is built to set up Pastors for failure. How can we better change the model? How can the chasm or wall built between the public and private self be dismantled so that Pastors can share vulnerability and struggle more openly? How does the performative nature of Church feed this? How does capitalism?? About That Article... This week, Mike and Tim invite friends Pastor Suzie Lind and Author Katie Haseltine to share their perspective, wisdom and experience as women in the Church, in light of the article published by the Gospel Coalition. How has a woman's sexuality been framed? How was a woman's relation to a man set up? What trauma does this all bring into a relationship? How does it continue in the marriage? What about for men? How has this imbalanced dichotomy effected men's understanding of their own sexuality? How does it effect the way men, the Church and society view and treat women? What does the Bible say? First, Mike takes us through a review of the first six chapters of the book, "Beautiful Union," that this article was taken from. What does it get wrong theologically?
