The Shift with Shaye_Critical History with Valda Wiles
This week Shaye is joined by a giant in Australia’s nursing history, Valda Wiles AM. Valda commenced her nursing career in 1956, and was a pioneer in the field of critical care nursing. She was also instrumental in winning today’s clinical care structure and the introduction of Clinical Nurse Specialists in our nursing teams. On top of this, she was also a union stalwart and authored a book on the history of critical care in Australia. For her work, she was awarded an Order of Australia in 1997.
**CORRECTIONS**
**The use of cardiac defibrillators by RNs in response to cardiac arrest was in the mid 1970s (long before AEDs)
**Ms Patricia Staunton, General Secretary of the NSW Nurses Association, (Later the Hon. MLA, AM) delivered us the Clinical Career Structure not Ms Mary Henlen**
Valda's book is entitled; There's A Bird In My Hand And A Bear By The Bed -- I Must Be In ICU: The Pivotal Years of Australian Critical Care Nursing
by Valda Wiles and Kathy Daffurn
