Twin Row Versus Single Row: Corn & Soybean Results On Raised Beds
In the Arkansas delta, where cotton was king, cropping systems were dictated by what was good for cotton. When Matt Miles started producing corn in 2006, he planted single row corn on 38 inch spacing on raised beds with furrow irrigation between the beds. Then he experimented with twin rows atop each raised bed and the results have never varied — twin rows trump single rows by at least ten bushels per acre. Matt and Layne Miles explain the practices they employ to maximize twin row production.

Insights and Lessons Learned From 25 Years of Using Plant Growth Regulators
Lee Lubbers and his brother Terry surveyed their wheat in 1998 and determined they needed stronger plants to prevent lodging. Their search for a solution took them to the specialty crop arena where they discovered plant growth regulators. At the time, PGR’s weren’t commonly used in broad acre Ag outside of cotton. Are You Spending Too Much on Fertilizer and Not Seeing The Results?
There is an economic principle that states that, after a certain point, each additional unit of input (like fertilizer) will result in progressively smaller increases in output (like crop yield). This means that there's an optimal amount of fertilizer for a given crop in a given soil, and beyond that point, you're just wasting money. Well, as it turns out, much — or maybe even most — of your applied Phosphorous and Potassium is unavailable for your crops. In the old days of inexpensive fertilizer this was less of a problem. However, as commodity prices dip and fertilizer prices remain elevated, you need to maximize your fertility applications. Chad Henderson maximizes his investment by treating his dry fertilizer with a biocatalyst. The $4 per acre treatment yields Chad an additional 12 bushels while using less fertilizer. Agronomist Steve Sexton explains how it works.

Member Spotlight: Russ Uselton — A First Gen Farmer Carving Out A Business On Rough Ground
Russ Uselton’s farm ground is so rough and rocky, he jokes that he looks south from his Tennessee perch and yearns for Chad Henderson’s red Alabama clay. All kidding aside, Russ — who started from scratch — is building a business on highly erodible, small patch farming, with a mixture of crops and cows. The first generation farmer bought cattle in 2005 and planted his first crop in 2018. Today he runs 200 cow-calf pairs on 1,000 acres of pasture and farms 500 acres of corn and soy. Russ talks to Damian about starting out, why he has to use cover crops, and the creativity required when you only own 40 acres!

Treating Late Season Corn Smut At Planting Time
Kevin Matthews had a field of corn get hit with hail third week of June. After analyzing the field, he decided to vary from his usual practice to salvage hailed corn. He usually applies fungicide and a foliar fertility product within 48 hours of a hail event if he thinks the corn can be saved. Fungicide is key, FMC’s Gail Stratman tells us, because those falling ice balls open up a lot of infection points on the corn plants inviting corn smut into the crop. Because this field had Xyway applied at time of planting, Kevin opted to split the field for an educational trial: Half will receive late-season fungicide, half will not, relying solely on the application at time of planting. Stay tuned, because if this works, you might just save yourself some time and money on late-season treatments.

We're Not in Kansas Anymore: Milo in Maryland?
Temple Rhodes was looking for an alternative to soybeans as a double crop following his wheat harvest. With sandy, less-than-good ground to work with, and tremendous deer pressure, Temple - with commentary from his father — decided soybeans wouldn’t work. After doing a little research and consulting with Nachurs’ Tommy Roach, Temple opted to experiment with 185 acres of double crop Milo, or grain sorghum as it’s also known. Drainage AND Subsurface Irrigation Using The Same Pipe?
In Fall of 2021, Miles Farms installed drainage tile on 35 acres as a trial with ADS. Drainage tile isn’t used in the Arkansas Delta where Matt and Layne Miles farm. However, they didn’t stick plastic pipe in the ground just to be different. Their objectives: Faster farming by being able to get on the field earlier. Changing their practices to allow no-till planting on 15” rows versus raised beds. Better irrigation by reversing the flow of water when the Delta heats up (and it always does!). Matt and Layne explain the early results of their drainage and irrigation install.

Why Seed Fails & What To Do When It Does

In-Furrow For A Firm Foundation
Temple Rhodes started applying nutrients in-furrow at time of planting 12 years ago. He didn’t get everything right the first go-round but in the learning years since, he’s certainly become a believer. Last year one of Temple's experiments demonstrated a 2,500 to 3,000 corn plant emergence difference between in-furrow nutrition acres versus non in-furrow treatment. The difference, according to Temple is in the building of the foundation. “I’m building a factory within that plant and you can’t build a factory without a firm foundation." Shrinking Grid Size To Diagnose A Soil Problem
In the past decade or two, soil sampling evolved from pulling a few plugs of dirt from each field to doing so on a grid. Grid sampling — if you’re unfamiliar — means gridding your field into blocks of 5 acre or even 2.5 acres. The more samples from each field, the better to more accurately prescribe your crop inputs. But sometimes dividing your field into 2.5 acre chunks isn’t small enough to straighten out a stubborn problem. Building Skeletal Strength In Soybeans
Kelly Garrett and Mike Evans have identified that one of the biggest yield limiters for soybeans is branch strength. They have spent a lot of time getting enough fertility into the plant in order to grow more pods, but if the branches can’t hold the pods, that’s a problem. Strategies For Reviving Soil Biology In A Dead Field
The Red River valley of southern Manitoba experienced flooding in Spring 2022. XtremeAg affiliate Riley Anderson had one field submerged under flood waters for more than a month. This would be a problem anytime of the year but with it happening during spring warm up, the flooding killed off soil biology. As Riley puts it, “It smelled like it was dead and rotting.” Now he’s working to revive his soil biology to make it productive and healthy sooner versus later. Xyway - Do's And Don'ts For Using This Game Changing Fungicide
In 2021 FMC launched Xyway, a systemic fungicide engineered to be applied at planting as a tank mix with starter fertilizer. 95% of the farms that used the product saw great results. But those farmers who applied Xyway in-furrow, especially in cool, damp soil, experienced germination issues.
Iowa farmer, Kelly Garrett, having heard of this potential issue through XtremeAg users, opted for a 2x2 application (2 inches deep and 2 inches away from the seed bed). His farm saw a 26 bushel yield bump using Xyway AND he didn’t have to perform a second fungicide treatment mid-Summer. Kelly is joined by FMC’s Gail Stratman to explain what we’ve learned about an effective and convenient fungicide.

Increasing Phosphorous Uptake (For An 8 To 1 Return?)
Robb Dedman was sitting in an Ag conference when he heard a presenter explaining how a product could increase phosphorous uptake in corn. As the crop consultant and biz partner to Matt Miles, Robb had been noticing that very problem at Miles Farms: The soil held ample “P” yet the crop tissue samples showed a deficiency. So, Mr. Dedman went on a search and discovery mission. He found a company named AgrotechUSA and conducted trials last year with their NutriCharge product, which increases phosphorous availability to plants. The results and the return on investment were significant.

These forces combine to create a real opportunity for manure utilization via drip irrigation. Planting Less, Harvesting More — Results From Soybean Population Reduction

Lee Lubbers and his brother started farming when even established farmers had trouble getting loans. It was during the midst of the ’80’s farm crisis. The brothers scraped and toiled to keep improving their financial position — always paying their expenses before themselves. Even so, their relationship with their local bank deteriorated and they were cut loose and left without financing heading into spring. They scrambled, found money, and then went about finding a lender to be their business partner. They did so.
