Remember The Game #126 - The Wizard
I think we've had more requests to review this movie on the show than just about any game we haven't covered yet. I had no idea it had the following it did, but your wish is my (eventual) command. Get out your Power Gloves, fire up Mario 3, and say "Californiaaaaa" a few times; we're reviewing The Wizard.   Is it a great movie? Not at all. But if you grew up in the NES's prime years, The Wizard is a 2 hour trip back to your childhood. It's basically a long-ass Nintendo commercial, and it's awesome. My buddy Tyler returns to the show this week, and man oh man did we have a good time talking about Fred Savage and Lucas and all the other weirdos in this movie.    And as always, before we get to the main course, you get a delicious appetizer in the RTG Industries Infamous Intro! I talk about what Venom wears under the symbiote, would I like another TMNT movie in the style of the original trilogy, why I won't give out another perfect review score on the show, and more!   We also have a spin-off edition of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One'; it's 'WATCH One, Remake One, Erase One'!! We're talking gaming movies on the 'Crappy video game movie' edition of the show, starring DOOM, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and the Street Fighter movie.   If you want to skip to something specific, here's where to go:   0:00 - 2:40 Intro    2:40 - 6:33  Initial self-indulgent rambling   6:33 - 13:40 'Blowing In The Cartridge' (Listener comments & questions, and Letter Time!)   13:40  - 24:56 'WATCH One. Remake One. Erase One.'   24:56 - 27:23 What have I been playing?   27:23 - 30:10Listener's 'The Wizard' Memories   30:10 + 'The Wizard' Talk!   Enjoy the podcast!

Bioware Leaderless? EA Statement Leaves More Questions Than Answers (VL365)
BioWare has had no shortage of corporate messages to be analyzed since the start of Virtual Legality, but the announcement of the departure of the head of the studio *and* the head of the Dragon Age brand by a representative of Electronic Arts (EA) might just be the most impactful. What does it all mean? Should BioWare fans be concerned? Why would the departures happen simultaneously on a Thursday in December? And why isn't a new GM ready to take the reins? Let's dive in. Change isn't unusual, but "interim" change is...in Virtual Legality. DGC Ep 238: Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time (part three)
Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. We look at some of the snags around the Zora domain as well as its main dungeon, chat about mechanic literalization, and then Tim explodes a Lore Bomb. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Until becoming the Hero of Time Issues covered: the undercurrent of masculine tropiness, the canonical relationship between Ruta and Link, not loving the Zora section, ignoring the critical path minigame, solving a puzzle in different ways, running around for an hour because of presentation, experience with the series hampering you, the usability problem presented by longevity, Tim connects the dots for Brett, not wanting to enter the Lost Woods, looking for another way to get a fish, not having the Rumble Pack, showcasing the rumble add-on, an elaborate fishing mini-game, the Game Cast 'Cast, whether or not the message in the bottle is misplaced, resolution changes between N64 and GameCube versions, bottles on the critical path, being misleading, the multiple uses for bottles, telling a parent when you're asked not to, getting sucked into the giant fish, watching the king scooch over, circuitous routes to map locations, difficulty with cause and effect and timing, lack of clarity with affordances, not knowing the distance you can throw Ruta, introducing a new element, another level inside a body, the ability to do organic stuff in textures, the mini-boss room, an unnecessary difficulty spike, the easier multi-stage boss with tentacles, failing mini-games and not wanting to repeat them, literalizing mechanics, upgrading without experience points, korok seeds in Breath of the Wild as a similar literalized mechanic, using the primary verbs to collect, the cutscene with Zelda and Sheik and Ganondorf, getting the Ocarina of Time, the Lore Bomb about the origin story of Ganon, overexplaining the lore, supporting differently abled gamers, bringing Zelda mechanics into musou games. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Big, Dark Souls, GameCube/Wii, Chris Hecker, World of Warcraft, Nintendo 64, Tomb Raider, System Shock 2, Thief, Pinocchio, Kingdom Hearts, Breath of the Wild, Far Cry 2, Assassin's Creed (series), Homer, Star Wars, future_Tarzan, Edgar Rice Burroughs (obliquely), Death Stranding, Metal Gear Solid (series), Johnny Pockets, Left 4 Dead 2, Sony, Microsoft, Valve, Age of Calamity, irreverentQ/Nolan Filter, Dynasty Warriors, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers.
