He has helped raise tens of millions of dollars in financing for growth companies in the clean energy, transportation, and resource efficiency sectors. Before joining EV Connect, he led corporate development for NanoH2O, a venture-backed developer of energy-efficient water purification technology. Previously, he held executive positions in business development, product management, and marketing at AeroVironment, an Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Developer, where he spent seven years elevating the AeroVironment into the industry leader, spearheading the company’s global expansion and launching its fleet management software solution. He has held roles in business development, finance, and strategy for several venture-backed technology start-ups.

#59 | Interview, Kimmo Rauma, VP Danfoss Editron
For this episode of the AVID Learning podcast Ryan Maughan talks to Kimmo Rauma who was the founder and CEO of Visedo Oy now part of the Danfoss Editron group. Kimmo tells us about his personal journey, his early experience in business and how he came to set up Visedo and the early years and then the transition when Visedo was acquired by Danfoss in 2017. Ryan and Kimmo discuss some of the key electrification areas in the off-highway market, electrifying machines like stone crushers and forestry equipment. Kimmo encountered many challenges and difficulties in those early days engaging with the market and convincing customers why they should be looking to electrify their machines. Kimmo explains that he came to realise that there was more to the business case for electrification than fuel savings alone. Passenger cars often get the big headlines, but there are major advancements happening using electrification to improve the productivity and efficiency in off highway machinery. Machines that often work 7 days a week and in one year will operate for more hours than an electric car would in its entire life time. But understanding the nature of the challenge and the business case to make electrified machines a viable proposition is essential. Kimmo realised the electric motors low speed torque delivery and ability to manage transient load conditions better than a conventional diesel engine drive system was the key to unlocking huge benefits from improved control and productivity. Listen to this episode to learn more about Kimmo’s journey as an entrepreneur from pioneering start-up to major global corporation and find out more about the challenges and opportunities for electrification in the heavy duty vehicle and marine markets. The State of Carbon Capture, Removal and Utilization
Net-zero carbon pledges are heating up. Japan just committed to reaching net zero, just four weeks after China did the same. In total, seven of the 10 largest economies in the world (not including America, India and Brazil) have made such commitments. And that's on top of all the subnational players, the corporates, and others. It has become increasingly clear that we're unlikely to reach net-zero at any significant scale without some pretty heavy carbon management. That means carbon capture, carbon removal, and carbon utilization. As a result, the carbon management sector has seen a frenzy of activity over the past couple years, ranging from research to investment to innovation. Just this year we've seen venture capital flow into companies protecting forests, sequestering carbon in the soil, capturing co2 directly in the air, and converting captured CO2 into a range of products from cement to jet fuel. So in this episode, we make sense of both the economics and the technology.  Shayle Kann talks with Dr. Julio Friedmann, a senior research scholar at the Columbia Center on Global Energy Policy. Julio is an expert on all things related to carbon management. The Interchange is supported by Schneider Electric, the leader of digital transformation in energy management and automation. Schneider Electric has designed and deployed more than 300 microgrids in North America, helping customers gain energy independence and control while increasing resilience and reaching their clean energy goals. We’re also sponsored by NEXTracker. NEXTracker has more than 30 gigawatts of resilient and intelligent solar tracking systems across six continents. Optimize your solar power plant.

Ben Hunt: We're Not Going to Fix This from the Top Down
What do we call a society that—from Wall Street to Main Street, from Washington, D.C. to your local city council chambers—seems to have been uprooted from facts and time-tested fundamentals, and is being driven instead by whatever stories can be sold as truth? Ben Hunt calls it “Fiat World,” a world declared into existence. A former hedge fund manager, in 2013 Ben Hunt created Epsilon Theory, a newsletter and website that has become essential reading for more than 100,000 professional investors and allocators across 180 countries. He’s also our very special guest on this week’s episode of the Strong Towns podcast. Ben tells Strong Towns president Chuck Marohn that massive debt and dislocation, social media, and the 24-hour news cycle (among other forces) have helped shape a world in which everything is presented by declaration. We have to be in this world, Ben says, but “we don’t have to give them our heart. We can maintain a distance of mind, an autonomy of mind, so that we see clearly what’s happening...We’re not going to be the suckers at the table.” Ben and Chuck discuss some of the new rules—in the economy, media, and beyond—that must be understood, challenged, and changed. They talk about why capital markets and housing markets are too important to be left to the investors. They talk too about the “zombification” of cities, in which towns and cities are all unwittingly doing the same self-destructive things. Ben and Chuck discuss why this won’t be fixed from the top down and how local leaders can make the right decisions in a Fiat World. We also get an update from Ben on how Epsilon Theory readers have helped distribute N95 and N95-equivalent masks to healthcare professionals and emergency responders through a kind of “underground” PPE pipeline. Listen to this wide-ranging conversation and you’ll start to see why, back in May, Chuck recommended Ben Hunt and Epsilon Theory to help make sense of our new reality. Chuck wrote: “No matter how badly we want to believe it—and even I, at times, want to believe it—seeing beyond the narrative, realizing its inherent falsehoods, is the most important and empowering first step we can take.”Additional Show Notes * Epsilon Theory * “Fiat World,” by Ben Hunt * Epsilon PPE Requests * Ben Hunt (Twitter) * Chuck Marohn (Twitter)

Michael Kremer on Economists as Founders
Michael Kremer is best known for his academic work researching global poverty, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2019 along with Esther Duflo and Abhijit Banerjee. Less known is that he is also the founder of five non-profits and in the process of creating a sixth. And Kremer doesn’t see anything unusual about embodying the dual archetypes of economist and founder. “I think there's a lot of relationship between the experimental method and the things that are needed to help found organizations,” he explains. Michael joined Tyler to discuss the intellectual challenge of founding organizations, applying methods from behavioral economics to design better programs, how advanced market commitments could lower pharmaceutical costs for consumers while still incentivizing R&D, the ongoing cycle of experimentation every innovator understands, the political economy of public health initiatives, the importance of designing institutions to increase technological change, the production function of new technologies, incentivizing educational achievement, The Odyssey as a tale of comparative development, why he recently transitioned to University of Chicago, what researchers can learn from venture capitalists, his current work addressing COVID-19, and more.
