Shawn Yoon is a Korean and in this episode, we talk about the sexual history of Korea from the dawn of Confucianism till roughly World War 2. We filmed the episode from 10 pm to midnight in Korea time, and realized that the topic needed more time to get us from WW2 to the present day, so we are filming part 2 soon. We dive into Confucianism, the Samurai, how Japanese Imperialism and capitalism impact prostitution and sex work. Shawn posits that cities cannot exist without prostitution, and we uncover many inconvenient truths around Asian sexual history and human trafficking. Sex is arguably the most important topic a person could talk about, yet sex education is generally overlooked in the curriculum of most schools, and in this episode sex work at the population level, throughout history is our main focus.
Part of the theme of this show is creating unity, and I firmly believe that one of the best ways to do that is by learning from our history, which often involves surfacing inconvenient truths. This episode is not for the faint of heart.
