The State VS Keith Davis Jr.
Play episode · 34 min

If you don't know the story of #KeithDavisJr., make sure you listen to this episode of the #GroundingsPodcast.

Keith is being framed for murder by the Baltimore police and the state of Baltimore.

Police shot at Keith over 44 times, hitting him in the face and neck.

Keith has been in jail for a crime he didn't commit since 2015.

Keith has been through FOUR trials because Marilyn Mosby, the state attorney, is determined to see him behind bars.

Keith was the first high-profile police in shooting in Baltimore since Freddie Gray, and because Marilyn Mosby gave the allusion (at the time) of accountability for Freddie Gray's murder, she's now being as hard on Keith as possible to win back the trust of police, police unions, and prosecutors.

Virtually all evidence — surveillance footage, ballistics reports, firearms reports, firearms registries, witness testimonies — show that Keith is innocent.

Keith's wife, Kelly, was on the phone with him when police began to fire over 44 rounds at him. She has fought relentlessly to free him since that day.

We get into all of these details, the context for his involvement, who he is, the lies and scandal and coverup surrounding his case, in this episode.

You can donate to Keith's family here.

You can follow Bilphena and Amelia as well.

Becoming Kwame Ture with Amandla Thomas-Johnson
In this episode we interview Amandla Thomas-Johnson, about his new book, Becoming Kwame Ture. Amandla Thomas-Johnson is a British-born writer of African-Caribbean descent. He is based in Dakar, Senegal, from where he covers West Africa. He has reported from a dozen countries, and has covered social movements from Trinidad and Tobago to Chile to Mauritania. He has worked for the BBC, The Guardian, Al-jazeera, and Channel 4, among others. Amandla discusses the myopic historical view US historiography has of Kwame Ture (who the US generally remembers as SNCC activist Stokely Carmichael), limiting his life’s work predominantly to the 16 years he lived in the US rather than looking at it from a wholistic and international perspective. In the conversation, we cover Ture’s Pan Africanism, his relationship to Sékou Touré and Kwame Nkrumah, and the development of the All African People’s Revolutionary Party (AAPRP). We talk about his commitment to Palestinian solidarity and support for social movements around the world. We also discuss Ture's involvement in attempts to return Kwame Nkrumah to power in Ghana, and his involvement in the Democratic Party of Guinea (PDG). Along the way Amandla tells fascinating stories, including Ture’s connections to the lives of figures such as Ho Chi Minh, Fidel Castro and Amilcar Cabral. This conversation and the book, reveal pats of the life, politics and organizing of Kwame Ture that have largely been neglected by most biographers operating from a US centric lens.

Ep. 305: The Legacy of White Supremacy in American Christianity
Robert P. Jones is the CEO and Founder of PRRI and a leading scholar and commentator on religion, culture, and politics. He is the author of the acclaimed book The End of White Christian America. His new book is White Too Long: The Legacy of White Supremacy in American Christianity. Jones reflects on the relationship between racism and white supremacy in White Christianity and the Age of Trump. Jones also explains how the lie that Christianity is somehow “race neutral” and “colorblind” does the work of right-wing politics and of sustaining social inequality along the color line in the United States and around the world. He also shares new data on authoritarianism and White Christian identity politics. Chauncey DeVega reflects on the emotional state of the American people in these weeks prior to Election Day 2020 and the cost of being a hope warrior and the need for both inspiration as well as healthy pessimism (and realism) about the tough fight ahead. In the age of Trump’s pandemic, Chauncey DeVega returns to the movies (again) and shares his thoughts on Yellow Rose, The Last Shift, and The War with Grandpa. And Chauncey defends the honor of rats in the face of the horrible slur that “Republicans are escaping Donald Trump like rats fleeing a sinking ship”. Episode 188 - The Israel Lobby
Roqayah is off this week, so Kumars is joined from the top of the hour by returning guest cohost Nora Barrows-Friedman, associate editor at the Electronic Intifada and cohost of the Electronic Intifada Podcast as well as The Brief, along with Jewish Voice for Peace organizer Estee Chandler, founder of that group’s Los Angeles chapter, producer of Middle East in Focus and Middle East Minute+ on KPFK, and host of the upcoming podcast called The Breakout Room with Estee Chandler. After sharing her personal path to Palestine solidarity activism, including her career in Hollywood as an actor and visual effects artist, Estee introduces listeners to the saga surrounding The Lobby – USA, a four-part Al Jazeera documentary exposing Israel’s covert influence operations in the United States that remains largely unseen almost three years after its completion due to a successful pressure campaign from the Israel lobby to get the government of Qatar to censor the film, later obtained and released by the Electronic Intifada. The gang discusses the context of the surge in repression of the Palestine solidarity movement after 2014, when an initial wave of victories for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaigns were followed by a critical mass of activists explicitly linking white supremacy in the US and Israel-Palestine at the protests sparked by the police killing of Michael Brown. Estee explains what the documentary reveals about the strategy and methods of Israel lobby organizations as well as the close relationships between them and the Israeli government. To RSVP for the special screening of the 1 hour supercut (plus a Q&A to follow) this Thursday October 15, go to You can follow Estee on Twitter at @caliactivist and keep up with her organizing with JVP Los Angeles @JVP_LA. Black Agenda Radio 10.26.20
Welcome to the radio magazine that brings you news, commentary and analysis from a Black Left perspective. I’m Margaret Kimberley, along with my co-host Glen Ford. Coming up: Millions of young people in the United States now see themselves as agents of transformational change, and one of the best places to begin is by studying Malcolm X. We’ll talk with an activist student of Malcolm’s life and work. And, white nationalist militias seem to feel right at home in western North Carolina. A young activist from Gastonia says the whole country needs to undergo a process of DE-white supremafication. But first – the world is reeling from the double whammy of Covid-19 pandemic and a global economic depression. The crisis has created an historic opportunity for the super-rich to massively restructure capitalist economies in ways that spell disaster for poor and working people. We spoke with Anthony Monteiro, a Duboisian scholar and activist with the Philadelpohia Saturday Free School. The Black Radical Tradition has always emphasized that Black American liberation is part of a global struggle. Desmond Fonseca is a doctoral student of history at the University of California who has lately been immersing himself in the study of Malcolm X. Fonseca is greatly impressed with Malcolm’s writings, speeches and organizing work – especially in his latter years, when Malcolm was an outspoken advocate of Black American internationalism. Lydia McCaskill is studying for both her Masters and Doctoral degrees at North Carolina Central University, and hopes to become a Constitutional Lawyer. But right now she’s a whirlwind of political activism in her hometown of Gastonia, in western North Carolina. McCaskill has launched a Stop Injustice Initiative.
