Dr. Natalie Crawford, Jane Wake and Dr. Christine Ekechi | A Hot-Topic Pregnancy Special
50 min

What happens when a fertility physician, a trainer specializing in pre- and postnatal fitness, and an ob-gyn talk pregnancy in an unfiltered setting? Find out in this very special episode, in which three leading maternity experts get real about the struggles many of us face but few of us discuss. Natalie Crawford, MD, starts with the factors that affect conception and beyond, focusing on age, stress and nutrition. Trainer Jane Wake busts eye-roll-worthy exercise myths once and for all. And Dr. Christine Ekechi sheds light on the emotional toll of motherhood, including miscarriage and the racial disparities in maternity healthcare. Heavy stuff? Sometimes. But to these notable women, this convo is long overdue.

#43 Fatal Conveniences™: Shallow Breathing: Take a Deep Breath
Pay attention to the way you breathe. Take a deep breath in right now. Are your shoulders raising? If so, you’re probably shallow breathing. Welcome to Fatal Conveniences™ This is a bite-sized segment that parallels The Darin Olien Show. In these segments, we get into society's Fatal Conveniences™. I define these as the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to. These things save us time and trick us into thinking they're actually good for us. But it's those same things that are breaking down our health and the health of the environment around us. I've spent most of my adult life obsessively researching these "conveniences." On every show, I pick one topic, and we dive into it. My goal is to make you more aware of these traps so that you can push back on them. Remember, it starts with you and the choices you make. So, if you're willing to look at your world from a different perspective and make little tweaks that amount to big changes, then this segment is for you. Shallow breathing keeps us in a perpetual state of stress. When you’re stressed, your breathing quickens and you inhale shallowly. However, if you breathe this way normally, your body is constantly in a state of stress. Shallow breathing, or thoracic breathing, comes with a laundry list of negative side effects. And you may not even realize you’re doing it. Instead of thoracic breathing, we all should be diaphragmatically breathing. This long fancy word just means you should be using your diaphragm to draw air into your body. Watching a newborn is a perfect example of diaphragmatic breathing. They draw air through their nose into their lungs, and their belly expands. As they exhale, their belly contracts. Try doing that now. See the difference? So besides stressing us out, what other harm is shallow breathing causing? Well, it limits our functional movement and muscular balance for starters. It also messes with our immune system and metabolism and can even cause muscle and joint pain and stiffness. But don’t worry. In this segment, I break down how to tell the difference between shallow and diaphragmatic breathing. And I give you ways to practice how to quit shallow breathing for good. Other info in this segment: I reveal the reasons behind my obsession with fatal conveniences The definitions of thoracic and diaphragmatic breathing How to tell if you’re shallow breathing How many breaths you should be taking per minute PTSD and breathing How you can retrain your body to breathe using your diaphragm Links & Resources: The Effect of Diaphragmatic Breathing on Pain, Anxiety and Depression Breathing Pattern Disorders and Functional Movement The Effect of Diaphragmatic Breathing on Attention The Respiration Connection The Physiological Effects of Slow Breathing in the Healthy Human How Shallow Breathing Affects Your Whole Body The Oxygen Advantage by Patrick McKeown Listen to Patrick McKeown’s episode of The Darin Olien Show Netflix’ Down To Earth’ Official Trailer Download Darin’s amazing new lifestyle app and get 3 days free at 121Tribe.com Barukas Nuts 15% discount with code “DARIN” Want more great info on how to detoxify your life? All About All About Fitness - The Trailer
Losing weight. Gaining muscle. Improving definition. Better health. Whether you exercise because you want to or you feel that you have to, you want to make sure that you are doing the best exercises for your specific needs and goals and THAT is why you should be listening to the All About Fitness podcast. I've been a certified personal trainer for more than 20 years and for much of the past 12 years I've been traveling the world to teach fitness education workshops for some of the largest organizations in fitness including certification organizations and equipment companies. For 2 years I was the director of education for a national health club company. For 5 years I worked directly for the American Council on Exercise (ACE), the largest non-profit fitness certification organization in the US, to develop education content, since leaving the organization as a full-time employee in 2013 I have produced content and helped with exam development as a contractor. In the early 2000s I taught the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), the largest for-profit fitness certification organization, for a health club company and since 2014 I have taught their online education program for individuals preparing to take the certification exam. I am one of a few people who has written textbook chapters and content for the 2 largest certification organizations. In addition, my book, Smarter Workouts: the Science of Exercise Made Simple, was published by Human Kinetics in 2019 and can teach you how to design workout programs for your specific needs. In addition to contract work for ACE and NASM, currently I develop and teach education programs for Nautilus and StairMaster; this means that I write and develop education for some of the most well-known names in the fitness industry, the point is that if these organizations trust me to develop their content then you can trust that anything you hear on the All About Fitness podcast will be research-based and backed by actual science. While I may not have hundreds of thousands of social media followers or have shirtless pictures in a top fitness magazine, the chances are that if you work with a personal trainer or fitness instructor then they have probably been influenced by my work either through an education program I've developed or content I've written for one of the above organizations. On the All About Fitness podcast not only will you learn about the best types of exercises for your fitness goals, you will also learn how to use exercise to slow down and manage the aging process. There is an overwhelming accumulating body of evidence to suggest that exercise can help slow down the effects of time and by listening to the All About Fitness podcast you will learn how you can take advantage of that for your personal workouts. To get a free chapter from Smarter Workouts along with 1 of the 21 workout programs available in the book, go to www.petemccallfitness.com and sign up for the mailing list. Q&A: Volume When Cutting, Training by Muscle Fiber Type, and Best Tip for 40+ Lifters
I’ve churned through over 150,000 emails, social media comments and messages, and blog comments in the last 6 years. And that means I’ve fielded a ton of questions. As you can imagine, some questions pop up more often than others, and I thought it might be helpful to take a little time every month to choose a few and record and share my answers. So, in this round, I answer the following three questions: * “Why should we not reduce the amount of weightlifting volume that we’re doing when we cut because you don’t need as much volume to maintain muscle as you do to gain muscle, and when you’re at deficit, you’re not going to gain muscle.” * “Are there different ways to train different types of muscle fibers to gain muscle and strength faster?” * “What one piece of advice would you give for continuing exercise through your 40s and older?” If you have a question you’d like me to answer, leave a comment below or if you want a faster response, send an email to mike@muscleforlife.com. 143 You Are The One
What is more beautiful than a being that knows itself? In this uplifting and inspiring episode @SriMati investigates her deeply held belief that you are the one you’ve been waiting for. In this epoch dominated by patriarchal, intellectual societies we are forever trying to reach a consensus on what is right and what is wrong. Yet if we examine creation through the lens of Ayurveda we understand that we are each unique. There is not another one of us in the entire multiverse. Therefore how could we possibly know what is right for anyone else? Julie’s life mission is to help us expand into the understanding that if we don’t receive ourselves as divine, then no one else is going to do it for us. No one! So it’s time to get real with who we are, take responsibility for our own divine blueprint and step joyfully into our fullest life experience. EPISODE LINKS.... Christmas is coming! Why Men Seldom Succeed Before Age 40 (DQ Solo)
#189. Register for Design the Next Year of Your Life 2021 (for men): TheGreatManWithin.com Join the Men’s Only Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheGreatManWithin Books Referenced: Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill Multi-Orgasmic Man by Mantak Chia The Enlightened Sex Manual by David Deida Why Men Seldom Succeed Before Age 40 Napoleon Hill had a theory that men seldom succeeded before the age of 40 because they dissipated their energy through over-indulgence of sex. Here are some excerpts on his thinking as written in Think and Grow Rich: “I discovered, from the analysis of over 25,000 people, that men who succeed in an outstanding way, seldom do so before the age of forty.” “This study disclosed the fact that the major reason why the majority of men who succeed do not begin to do so before the age of forty to fifty, is their tendency to dissipate their energies through the over-indulgence in physical expression of the emotion of sex.” “The majority of men never learn that the urge of sex has other possibilities, which far transcend mere physical expression.” Here’s my take: From my studies on sexual energy – leaning on the likes of Mantak Chia and David Deida – it’s not so much about the over-indulgence in sex, rather it’s the over-indulgence of ejaculation. As these teachers espouse, ejaculation is the releasing of vital life force that could otherwise be transmuted into love, creativity and the driving force behind your purpose. As Deida says in his book The Enlightened Sex Manual: “One of the main effects of too-frequent ejaculation us a very subtle spiritual dullness.” I can’t help but agree with aspects of all of these teachings. As a man who spent most of his live over-indulging in sexual pursuits and ejaculating far too often, I felt that spiritual dullness and dilution of my life force. In fact, it was during an 11-month abstinence period from sex, masturbation and ejaculation when I decided to change my entire life – leaving a 15-year career in corporate to live my life’s mission of helping men achieve their potential. All that extra non-ejaculated energy needed somewhere to go…so here I am. If this is speaking to you, I encourage you to listen to today’s episode of The Great Man Within Podcast. -DQ
