Hallelujaween Part Two: Black Horror (Feat. Professor Tananarive Due)
1 hr 2 min

We're continuing the conversation with part two of our Hallelulujah-ween spectacular! This week, we’re talking Black horror movies with film historian Tananarive Due! She's a professor whose course, called “The Sunken Place: Racism, Survival and the Black Horror Aesthetic” has gained national attention! She teaches on Black Horror and Afrofuturism at UCLA and is an executive producer of Shudder's documentary Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror. She's also worked with Get Out's Jordan Peele on several projects including her work on the annotated screenplay of the film.

Tre'vell and Jarrett chat with Professor Due about Black horror tropes, art imitating reality and what she'd like to see next from the Black horror genre. Plus, we'll discuss the real-world and imagined horrors of  Get Out, Lovecraft Country and more! You don't want to miss it.

But first...

Pass the Popcorn

Tre'vell and Jarrett have opinions about this year's Halloween candy power rankings.

DIS/Honorable Mentions

This week, Jarrett has an honorable mention for a few films. First up is the documentary Totally Under Control about the US government's response (or lack thereof) to COVID-19. You can watch it now on Hulu.  Next is Black Box, with Phylicia Rashad and Uncorked's Mamoudou Athie. You can catch it on Amazon Prime. Also, Jarrett tries to convince Tre'vell to watch The Lie. You can watch it for yourself here

Tre'vell has an honorable mention for the new show "Sovereign" from Ava DuVernay & Bird Runningwater which will be the first network show to center an indigenous story.

And finally, Tre'vell has an honorable mention for #fantifam member Rachel who shares her Halloween (or Hallelujahween) plans for 2020.

We're having a Friendsgiving! Friends of the pod Michelle Peralta (she/her) and Moury Minhaz (she/her) and everyone has brought some dishes for you! We’re dishing on the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Reunion, and all the feels it brought up for us. We dish on Patti LaBelle being caught up in another controversy involving a white guy's burner account and her nephew, and James is going undercover to Parler an alt right social media platform and he might need your help. In the main dishes we give you ways to Celebrate Native American Heritage Day, which is the day after Thanksgiving, and Michelle gives us some much-needed mental health tips/practices, believing in ourselves, redefining our value, and community care as we end out the year. Feel the love- it’s Friendsgiving here on Minority Korner.
