Ep 66: Overcoming obstacles
Play • 18 min

Hello friends. I’d like to talk a little today about overcoming obstacles. Now, I’ve been around awhile and have experienced a lot of things but I won’t pretend to be a know-it-all in this situation. I’ve been through a number of life pivots and was hoping to address this topic and give you some encouragement on your journey as well.

There are so many things that can get in our way. We have plans, and goals and hopes and dreams and we can get frustrated and discouraged when things don’t go as planned, but what has ever gone according to plan, right? Can we really point to anything and say that it went exactly the way it was supposed to go? Does anything we achieve come easy? Is success painless?

I mean even when we download someone’s step-by-step instructions, we find that there are always some other steps involved. Am I wrong?

Life can be so crazy sometimes. We fight, we push, we struggle to try to keep up and just keep our heads above water at times.

I know what it’s like to have a family and to try to run a business while raising kids. And now, add in all the COVID craziness into the mix. If you’re a mom and you’re trying to launch your business, or a dad and wondering how to put all the pieces together and still be present for your kids, then hopefully, I’ll give you all (or as they say here in Virginia) give y’all some hope today.

Because we all need a ray of hope sometimes. We all need that encouragement and for someone to help cheer us along when we’re wondering if our dreams can become a reality someday.

 So, if:

·      There’s chaos all around you

·      You’ve lost your job

·      Your career is in a rut and you don’t see a way out

·      Recently divorced and life is upside down

·      You don’t have enough time to take care of the things you want to do

·      Or even the obstacle of our own fears and doubts about ourselves

I’ve found over the years that we can overcome a lot of obstacles that face us with a positive mindset. The way we look at things.. at challenges.. at our fears.. about ourselves, can be overcome, even if it’s a little bit at a time, over time.

Hopefully, this episode will be the encouragement you’ll need for not only today, but tomorrow as well.

So what CAN we do when we’re going through a challenging time? How are we supposed to just THINK our way through this?

Well, I’ve got an E-book called ‘How to Overcome Challenges by Changing Your Mindset’ and I’ll post a link to the E-book for you in the show notes, but I’ll be using some excerpts of that E-book for you today that I think will help you through these challenges your facing.

The first step in overcoming any challenge is to expect the best out of the situation. Or at least, expect something good can happen. When you go into a challenge and you’re expecting failure, chances are pretty good that you’ll fall short of your goal. Your mindset going into any situation plays a big role in whether or not you’re going to come through it with success.

Even when your situation seems overwhelming and completely unbeatable, you can choose to think the best of it.

I remember a time (and you may have heard me say this in the past) when I was going through a divorce after 27 years of marriage, and I lost my job (because I was an emotional mess) and just saying ‘God, you’re going to have to help me through this. You’re going to have to show me the way, because I don’t see the way right now. ‘

So, I’m a Christian and believe that God doesn’t shield us from life’s problems, but will hold our hand through life’s problems. And that’s what I was asking for, then.

I was saying, ‘God, you can show me the way out.’ You see, that’s believing there is a way out. That’s knowing, in advance, that there’s a way out.

And part of learning the way out of a tough situation is to learn and acknowledge how this situation came about in the first place.

Obstacles usually don’t come out of thin air, for no reason. Even though it’s something blocking our path we can learn from it and focus on solutions instead of the problem.

Try some of these tips to focus your mindset on expecting the best:

Use positive self-talk. When you face a challenge, do you find yourself saying, “I can’t do this? Or, I can’t go through this AGAIN?” If that’s the case, your self-talk is sabotaging your success. Instead, tell yourself you can and will succeed.

Replace negative thinking with positive, productive thinking. Think about the road before you in a way that spurs you on toward success.

Remind yourself that the only way to fail is to give up and, instead, resolve to keep putting one foot in front of the other until you reach your goal.

Believe in yourself. You have the ability to do some amazing things. You just have to trust in your abilities, gifts, and talents.

Think about accomplishments from the past. You’ve certainly succeeded at many things before, but you’ve likely forgotten. Focus on previous victories and you’ll feel confident to tackle that challenge that’s staring you in the face right now.

With the proper mindset in place, your talents, desires, and abilities will naturally lead you to success. Even if you fall short, you’ll make the most of the experience by learning from it and moving forward in a positive direction.

In every situation, there is a silver lining to be found and appreciated. Do you look at something that’s hard and get easily frustrated about how hard it is? Do you always believe that the worst-case scenario is the only scenario? You can learn to think differently and steer the ship of your life in a different direction.

What’s the high point of the challenge you’re facing? There’s something positive about the situation you’re in. What is it? What can you learn from this? How can you grow from this experience? How will this experience make you a better person? How will this event in your life alter your future for the better?

Hey, I’ve been fired from a job in the past (remember, I was a mess from the divorce).

Discover the lesson. Every situation has something to teach you if you’ll look for it. Ask yourself: What can I learn from this challenge about my abilities and my circumstances?

How will this situation improve the quality of my life?

The only way you’ll find solutions to the frustrations you face is to look for them. Think of something in your life that’s standing in your way or frustrating you. Instead of thinking of all the reasons this bothers you, think about ways you can make it better. Is there someone you can ask for help? Are there habits that you can change? Can you schedule your time differently?

The questions you ask yourself about your situation will determine your attitude. And, your attitude will determine your chances of success. Ask yourself why things are so frustrating, and your mind will return many reasons for you to be frustrated. Ask yourself how you can solve the dilemma you face, and your mind will give you the answers you’re looking for.

There’s a popular book out called ‘Happiness is a choice’ and you can get it on Amazon, but anger and frustration is also a choice, not just happiness.

I like to give people this tip: ‘Think about what you’re thinkin about.’ It’s just a way to keep our thoughts in check.

If you spend your time complaining about the situation you’re in, you’ll spin your wheels and stand on the same frustrating ground. I’m not asking you to deny reality, but make your reality better by asking yourself how you can affect things in a positive way.

When you worry about what might happen in the future, you’re avoiding the productive thinking that can make all the difference in your life. You’ll also miss out on the gift that’s found in the present moment.

There are some good things that we can focus on in the present. Challenges can help you grow as a person, or it can cause you to stop you in your tracks. The choice is yours.

Be strong and face what’s in front of you. The more you face your fears head on, the more confident and motivated you’ll become as you consciously step closer and closer to your dreams.

The list of what-ifs you face could go on forever if you let it.... “What if I embarrass myself? What if I fall short? What if this doesn’t work?” Your mind WILL answer those questions and prevent you from EVER moving forward. Is this what you really want – or deserve?

I talked about the ‘If only’ mindset trap in episode 60 of the Podcast. Things can spiral down pretty quickly if we don’t keep our thoughts in check.

Solutions can come in many different ways, like help from others that have gone through something similar, or even the exact same thing. Has anyone you know, gone through a similar circumstance and come out successfully? Are there books written by people who’ve succeeded in this area that detail how they arrived at their success? Can anyone in your community help you with this project?

I’m connecting with others, locally on LinkedIn, even today. Why? There’s value in community. I’m old enough to remember seeing people in my community, actually get together to talk about life and help each other with the problems they were having.

This doesn’t happen much today. We can’t just text our way through our problems. Watching YouTube may help, but talking to real people about real problems is what we were meant to do. People connecting with people.

Ask your friends and family if they’ve faced a challenge similar to yours, and ask what steps they took to accomplish their goal. Listen to what they have to say. Really listen,  and see if you can take their ideas and implement them into your own situation.

Creative thinking is sometimes necessary. Out-of-the-box thinking can help you see your situation in a whole new perspective.

I’ll give you an example. I was talking to someone a few days ago about the labor shortage and he was asking me if I had any ideas on how he can hire more reliable part time help for the business. I told him about how AARP has community job placement programs in place to keep senior citizens employed. You’ll probably find that the most reliable people will be the older members of your staff.

Starting today, map out a plan for a way out of your situation. What’s the next step you need to take? If you don’t know what the next step is, then your next step is to find out what comes next.

When you complete the first step, what do you do next? What do you do after that? Coming up with a game plan is simple. All you do is list the steps you must take in order. You can tweak and improve your plan as you get feedback on what is and isn’t working. The first draft of your plan is just the beginning steps to your success.

Sometimes, the best way to lay out a roadmap is simply to brainstorm and write down ideas for possible tasks you can take without waiting for someone or something else. You can always edit the list later. What one thing can you do right now?

I’ve found that when I do something a little outside my comfort zone, it wasn’t so bad after all. Then, I find that I’m more confident and my self- image has improved a little more as well.

Once you’ve set out your plan of action, and what that ‘one thing’ is that you can do right now, take the first action step immediately. Instead of sitting around and looking at your plan, hoping things work in your favor, make things work in your favor by taking the first step forward. This will create the momentum you’ll need and motivate you to truly believe in the probability of your success.

The hardest part about accomplishing any goal is getting started. The good news, though, is that once you’re moving in the right direction, you’ll be unstoppable if you choose to be. You only climb a mountain one small step at a time.

So, if you’re looking at a situation where you don’t see a way out, you need to get some forward movement in your life so you can see what is and isn’t going to work. If something, or someone is standing in your way and you don’t see a way out, you can make a way. There is always a way.

Take a little step forward every day. Even if that little step is a positive thought or belief that some good will come out of this. They don’t have to be physical steps, they can be mental steps.

If you feel afraid, confront your fear. Expand your comfort zone, just a little.

If you’re consumed with negativity, remember what I said before and ‘think about what you’re thinking about.’

If you lack confidence in yourself, focus on your strengths, not your weaknesses. Start from that vantage point.

If you’re in an unhealthy relationship and you don’t have the support you feel you should have, first talk to them about it and see if that can change. If not, and you’re not married, then get out.

Friends, there will always be challenges that we face in life and sometimes, they’re huge. Now is this Podcast all about starting an online business, yes. Is this episode straying from that theme, well I don’t think so. Because I know that in order to start an online personal brand business, you need to have a positive mindset.

Nothing good will come from a negative mindset. And you’ll hear me speaking about positive mindset in this Podcast on a regular basis.

Not every answer to every challenge we face in the business realm will be found in a business book. I don’t just read my episodes from business books.

We can learn from each other. We need each other. We can support each other. I need support through problems just like you do. I have people I can go to when I have issues and I hope that you do as well.

Challenges will always be there. Obstacles will always be in the way but remember, if there is no way, then make a way.
