Interview With "John Wick: Chapter 4" Editor Nathan Orloff
"John Wick: Chapter 4" has received the best reviews, audience reactions, and box office of the "John Wick" franchise. It makes it all the more impressive when you consider the latest film is nearly three hours long and could've gone wrong in so many ways in its final edit. Nathan Orloff ("Ghostbusters: Afterlife"), an openly gay film editor, brought a unique perspective to the "John Wick" franchise, which is known for its hyper-masculine themes and characters. His ability to connect with the material and understand the nuances of the action sequences made him an essential collaborator with director Chad Stahelski. He has contributed significantly to the film's success due to the handling of the pacing for such an epic action film, and he was kind enough to spend a few minutes chatting with me about his work on the film. Interview With "Creed III" Cinematographer, Kramer Morgenthau
"Creed III" recently opened in theaters to the franchise's best box office opening and is continuing the "Creed" franchise in new and unexpected ways. One of those fresh approaches was through the film's cinematography. Michael B. Jordan, in his directorial debut, brought on "Creed II" director of photography Kramer Morgenthau to execute his vision for the third and most ambitious film in the franchise yet. That ambition came from the decision to shoot the boxing scenes using IMAX cameras, a first for any sports film, and depict the action in a style that resembled anime. Interview With "The Sea Beast" Director Chris Williams & Producer Jed Schlanger
"The Sea Beast" dropped on Netflix over the summer to positive reviews but very little recognition from awards voting bodies until we got to the Annie Awards. Afterward, it was nominated for Best Animated Feature Film at this year's Academy Awards. This is one of the year's best animated feature films with an epic scope, beautiful animation, and excellent voice acting. "A House Made Of Splinters" had its world premiere at last year's Sundance Film Festival, where it mostly went under the radar for many despite receiving positive reviews. There were questions about its awards eligibility this year, given it did not have a U.S. distributor for the longest time. Still, it went on to receive nominations from various documentary awards voting bodies and even earned a Spirit Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature. Now, the film has been nominated for Best Documentary Feature at this year's Academy Awards, and many are starting to take notice of this delicate, harrowing, and essential piece of work which focuses on orphaned children in a war-torn Ukraine. Interview With "New Moon" Directors and Writers, Colman & Raul Domingo
Known for his Emmy-winning work on "Euphoria," and films like "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" and "Zola," Colman Domingo took on a new role with the animated short film "New Moon." Adapting a segment from his one-man show "A Boy and His Soul," Colman and his husband Raul set out to bring the words of Colman's mother to life. "I'm very much a mama's boy," Colman says. "For me, this is a testament to my mother's imagination." In "New Moon," Colman narrates the story of J.J., a young boy who is hearing about a special ritual from his mother. "I remember that moment so very well, of her teaching me about the New Moon and this ritual that I've had for years. The moment you see the New Moon, you just hold your hand wide open, hold your purse open, and whatever you're seeking, it will come to you." We all knew that Andrew Dominik's "Blonde" would be one of the year's most controversial films before its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival. And that turned out to be true. Interview With "The Blue Caftan" Director/Writer, Maryam Touzani
"The Blue Caftan," tells the story of Mina and her closeted gay husband Halim, who run a caftan store in Morocco. When they hire a young man as an apprentice, Mina begins to suspect Halim may be taking too much interest in him. The film had its world premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and has been selected by Morocco as their official submission for Best International Feature at this year's Academy Awards. Interview With "All That Breathes" Director, Shaunak Sen
"All That Breathes" had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize in World Cinema Documentary Competition and then played at the Cannes Film Festival later this year, where it won the Golden Eye award for the best documentary, becoming the first film ever to win both prizes. It was later screened at the New York Film Festival, is now playing in limited release, and has been nominated for two Critics Choice Documentary Awards: Best Cinematography and Best Science/Nature Documentary. It's one of the most strikingly beautiful and memorable documentaries of the year as it follows Mohammad Saud and Nadeem Shehzad, who rescue and treat injured birds in New Delhi, commenting on the state of global warming and how it's impacting our ecosystems. The 74th annual Primetime Emmy Awards were held last week at the Microsoft Theater in Downtown Los Angeles, California, on September 12th. Unfortunately, I missed watching the show live because I was at the Toronto International Film Festival, but I wouldn't miss the chance to podcast about the show and its winners for the world. Here to join me to talk about everything that happened, including some brief thoughts on some new shows we've been watching, such as "House Of The Dragon," "The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power," and "She-Hulk: Attorney At Law," I have Zoe Rose Bryant. Interview With "Speak No Evil" Director/Writer, Christian Tafdrup
"Speak No Evil" had its world premiere, digitally, at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, where it shocked and terrified audiences with its dark humor, which grows more sinister and more threatening until the cringe comedy is completely erased, and all that is left is stomach-churning horror. One of the stand-out films from the festival, it's been playing in limited release in New York and Los Angeles but will now be available to stream on Shudder starting September 16th. The Next Best Series Podcast - Interview With "Ozark" Emmy-Nominated Cinematographer, Eric Koretz
The dark journey of the Byrde family came to a conclusion in Season 4 of "Ozark" this year. For its final season, the Emmy award-winning Netflix show has been nominated for 13 Emmy Awards. One of them is for Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series (One Hour) for the series finale "A Hard Way To Go." Cinematographer Eric Koretz was kind enough to spend a few minutes discussing his work on the second half of season 4 (of which he shot four episodes) and, more specifically, his work on the series finale. Interview With "I Love My Dad" Star, Patton Oswalt
"I Love My Dad" had its world premiere at the South By Southwest Film Festival (SXSW), where it won the Best Narrative Feature Competition jury prize and audience awards. The feature directorial debut of James Morosini (who also starred in and wrote the film) tells an unbelievably cringey true story about James' relationship with his father, played by Grammy and Emmy Award-winning actor Patton Oswalt. Interview With "Not Okay" Director/Writer, Quinn Shephard
Actress turned writer, and director Quinn Shephard made her feature directorial debut in 2017 with the release of "Blame." Now, here she is five years later with her follow-up film, which has a wider platform (the film is currently streaming on Hulu), a bigger cast, and budget. "Not Okay" tells the satirical story of a wannabe influencer and writer who is a compulsive liar, piggybacking off of the trauma of others, all in an attempt to go viral. The unlikable lead character is brought to vivid life by Zoey Deutch. Quinn was kind enough to spend a few moments talking about the film's main character, where the idea for the movie came from, discovering 2022's breakout star Mia Isaac and more.
