11. Understanding The Phobias (homo, trans, and biphobia)
Having an intense fear or preconceived idea about another person different from yourself based on skin colour, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, ability or any other identity dimension ususally occurs for one of four reasons: the unknown, anxiety of your caregivers, religious beliefes, and/or learned behavior.
The phobias I talk about in this episode are homophobia, transphobia, and biphobia. Each has serious and lasting negative effects individuals in the 2SLGBTQI+ communities. Treating people with disrespect, hostility, aggression, contempt, prejudice, aversion, or hatred will not create inclusive spaces. Creating awareness of each of these concepts, and how they play out in the real world is the first step to changing them.
In this episode I talk about:
* the three phobias affecting 2SLGBTQI+ - homophobia, transphobia, and biphobia
* real life examples of words, comments, and language that perpectuate these phobias
* the term cissexism and how it impacts 2SLGBTQI+ individuals
