Topic: Challenge Your Biases

Note from Aimee J.You will do amazing today!

Action: The first thing I need you to do is accept that you can be affected by biases. If you can’t do that, then you won’t get anywhere. Then I want you to hear about a few types of biases: confirmation bias, self-serving bias, and the halo effect.

Confirmation bias - tendency to interpret new evidence as confirmation of one's existing beliefs or theories (women are bad drivers)

Counter: Keeping an open mind. Looking for evidence from all sides and not just one.

Self-Serving bias - tendency for a person taking credit for positive events or outcomes, but blaming outside factors for negative events (test grades)

Counter: Don’t ask “who’s fault is this?” or blame the circumstances. Focus on “what can you learn from this?”

Halo effect - tendency for an impression created in one area to influence opinion in another area usually positive (beauty = smarts)

Horn effect - tendency for an impression created in one area to influence opinion in another area usually negative (bald = bad)

Counter: Be objective and not base your opinions on first impressions

If we don’t challenge our biases, then we won’t grow.

Affirmations:

You are Awesome.

You are Loved.

You are Needed. And most importantly,

YOU ARE ENOUGH.
