What is an executive?

Today we focus our career discussion on the executive ranks of an organization. We talk about what the role of an executive is, what attributes make up an executive, and what skills we can all start building today to succeed as an executive.

It turns out, defining an executive role is not straightforward. There are several attributes that can encompass a modern executive:

• Signing authority
• Weight of role power (towards the top of a multi-layered organization)
• Responsibility/Ownership of large initiatives
• Decisionmaking authority to allocate the organization's resources
• Large "blast radius" (decisions impact lots of people)

We also discuss five cornerstone skills for succeeding as an executive. Luckily, these are all skills you can start building, practicing, improving, and demonstrating today:

• Dealing with complexity
• Defining and living your core values
• Mastering the art of delegation
• Building and cultivating exceptional relationships
• Broadening your gaze internally and externally
