Pilates is about exercise and healthy movement, but different styles of Pilates approach different aspects of fitness and movement. John Garey joins us on the Pilates Elephants podcast to discuss what he loves about teaching an athletic form of Pilates. He describes why we shouldn’t get hung up on using a prescribed number of springs in a given exercise, but instead use the springs that allow us to progress our Pilates practice to where we want to be. The whole point of exercise is to be challenged and develop.
Pilates also aims to provide space for better mental health by encouraging the right movement. Your students are supposed to use the springs that work for them in the exercise that they’re doing and the stage that they’re at with their movement practice. As they develop their skills, the springs used should change as they progress their knowledge and change their body. Don’t let your students get fixated on where other people are at — encourage and empower them to focus on finding their flow.
