This is a topic that is very close to my heart (and Lesley Logan is brilliant in this conversation!) — Pilates instructor pay rates. We are going to unpack the questions, hangups, and ethical conundrums around what to charge as a Pilates instructor. There has been a deluge of questions on this theme, and our expert guest Lesley Logan dives in to answer them and give us her insights into why we undervalue ourselves as a profession. Get your brain moving as we think about how much to charge, how to charge, and how to be in the right mindset.
Most movement professionals get into teaching because they love it and they want to help people. But, for some reason, Pilates teachers often think that charging appropriately for their skills and exercise is wrong or unethical. And the truth is you're not charging for your time; you’re charging for the transformation that you provide. Move away from the scarcity and fear mentality, and understand the true value that you provide to your students.
Price vs. Value
A lot of information about quality is contained in a price. For instance, most people feel that more expensive equals more valuable. Or that something on sale or discounted is unwanted or less valuable. How do we, as instructors, stop ourselves from undercharging? First, own the transformation that you give someone — think about the changes that happen and the life that your students are going to have because of your Pilates classes. Second, trust that you are not selling something that doesn't actually do anything; Pilates has tangible benefits and tangible results. So, when you’re setting your Pilates instructor pay rates, don’t sell yourself short.
You have unique talents and skills. That’s why you are an instructor! Your students come to you for those abilities, and they value the transformation your Pilates class prompts. If you devalue your services with a rock bottom price, you risk your student devaluing their transformation as well. It’s not unethical to charge for your skills and expertise. If you discount yourself, you'll be discounted — when people are figuring out their budget, they don't always cut out the most expensive things; they cut the things that feel discounted to them. If you are concerned about the value you bring as an instructor, there are easy ways to improve your skills.
