The Honourable Tony Clement is a former Minister in the Stephen Harper Government federally, and the Mike Harris and Ernie Eves Governments in the Province of Ontario.
During his time in the House of Commons (2006-2019) Mr. Clement served as: Minister of Health, Minister of Industry, President of the Treasury Board and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario. He therefore played a lead role in getting Canada’s economy back on track after the most significant global economic recession since the 1930s. In Opposition Clement was Foreign Affairs Critic and Justice Critic.

About Rima Berns-McGown
Dr. Rima Berns-McGown is the former member of Provincial Parliament for Beaches-East York. She served as the Official Opposition Critic for Poverty and Homelessness and a member of the Standing Committee on the Legislative Assembly.
Before she was elected, Rima taught Diaspora Studies at the University of Toronto. She holds a PhD in International Politics from the University of Aberystwyth, an MA from the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International studies of the Johns Hopkins University, and a Bachelor of Journalism and Political Science from Carleton University. She has a long history of writing about and advocating for systemic change that creates equity and societies that truly work for everyone who lives in them.
Rima was born in South Africa of a mixed background and is proud to be a member of Ontario’s first Black Caucus.

How China built a network of surveillance to detain over a million people and produce a system of control previously unknown in human history.
A cruel and high-tech form of colonization has been unfolding over the past decade in China’s vast northwestern region of Xinjiang, where as many as a million and a half Uyghurs, Kazakhs and Hui have vanished into high-security camps and associated factories. It is the largest internment of a religious minority since World War II.

About Terror Capitalism: Uyghur Dispossession and Masculinity in a Chinese City
In Terror Capitalism anthropologist Darren Byler theorizes the contemporary Chinese colonization of the Uyghur Muslim minority group in the northwest autonomous region of Xinjiang. He shows that the mass detention of over one million Uyghurs in “reeducation camps” is part of processes of resource extraction in Uyghur lands that have led to what he calls terror capitalism—a configuration of ethnoracialization, surveillance, and mass detention that in this case promotes settler colonialism. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in the regional capital Ürümchi, Byler shows how media infrastructures, the state’s enforcement of “Chinese” cultural values, and the influx of Han Chinese settlers contribute to Uyghur dispossession and their expulsion from the city. He particularly attends to the experiences of young Uyghur men—who are the primary target of state violence—and how they develop masculinities and homosocial friendships to protect themselves against gendered, ethnoracial, and economic violence. By tracing the political and economic stakes of Uyghur colonization, Byler demonstrates that state-directed capitalist dispossession is coconstructed with a colonial relation of domination.

About Darren Byler
Darren Byler is a sociocultural anthropologist whose teaching and research examines the dispossession of stateless populations through forms of contemporary capitalism and colonialism in China, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia.
His monograph, https://www.dukeupress.edu/terror-capitalism (Terror Capitalism: Uyghur Dispossession and Masculinity in a Chinese City) (Duke University Press, 2021), examines emerging forms of media, infrastructure, economics and politics in the Uyghur homeland in Chinese Central Asia (Ch: Xinjiang). The book, which is based on two years of ethnographic fieldwork among Uyghur and Han internal male migrants, argues that Chinese authorities and technologists have made Uyghurs the object of what it names “terror capitalism.” It shows that this emergent form of internal colonialism and capitalist frontier-making utilizes a post-9/11 discourse of terrorism, what he shows produces a novel sequence of racialization, to justify state investment in a wide array of policing and social engineering systems. These techno-political systems have “disappeared” hundreds of thousands of Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims in “reeducation” camps and other forms of productive detention while empowering millions of state workers and private contractors who build the system. The book considers how the ubiquity of pass-book systems, webs of technological surveillance, urban banishment and mass internment camps have reshaped human experience among native Uyghurs and Han settler-colonizers in the capital of the region...

Erin O’Toole and his Conservatives are fighting a very smart battle in this election, outflanking the Liberals to the left on working class issues and stealing the NDP’s thunder. The biggest loser in this battle is Liberals who increasingly become the party of the elite and out of touch. It’s a smart strategy.

Yesterday marked 10 years since we lost Jack Layton. Agree with him or not, he was giant in the world of Canadian politics and his impact and influence is still felt, and missed.
The Liberals seemed to have grossly misjudged the ease to which they would sail through this campaign. They seem to be regrouping on strategy and rolled out their ‘platform’ — spoiler alert, it’s policy bullet points and literally nothing we haven’t heard from them yet. Did they botch this whole thing?
We look at the current polling and ask, can the NDP continue their upswing?

The results of the Nova Scotia election were a stunner. After calling an early election to seek a majority, Iain Rankin and the NS Liberals were soundly defeated in a whopper of an upset. The Progressive Conservatives will now form a majority government and the results have to leave the federal Liberals wondering what this means for them come September 20th.
The NDP policy platform, Ready for Better, has a lot to like. It’s an inspiring policy plan, but like always, there’s room for improvement. We look at some of the highlights and discuss a few places where the party could stand to be more bold.

Here it is folks — Trudeau’s electoral dysfunction is finally over. The Liberals are busily leaking to the media that an election call is coming on Sunday and we’ll be heading to the polls September 20th. The NDP policy platform is live, and the party is positioning itself in contrast to the Liberals. Will it be enough?
Then, we aren’t speculating, we in a fourth wave of COVID-19. Will the Liberals and the Conservatives agree to the commitment the NDP made to ensure all candidates are fully vaccinated before they begin campaigning or will they put public health at risk?

We now know statistically who the Canada’s vaccine hesitant are and they ain’t Maxime Bernier stans. It appears middle aged white women in Ontario who Liberal are the ones we should outraged by, you know, besides for the obvious reasons.

Corporate Canada’s leaders have come together to launch an unprecedented initiative - rapid testing of their employees in an effort to “get the economy back on track.” Their plan comes at the expense of working Canadians, frontline workers, and provides a very dangerous false sense of security.
Ottawa has announced yet another round of corporate bailouts in the form of a cash loan of up to $1 million to business. With all the wage subsides and rent subsides pouring into corporate coffers, the government is intent on finding more ways to prop up failed businesses instead of investing in struggling Canadian workers.
Big news this week out of NDP HQ. Q4 of 2020 was a near record setting fundraising quarter with $2.5 million raised. The party is out of debt, has cash in the bank, and seems ready for an election. Could 2021 be the year of the NDP?

Socialist Leadership in NB, Student Loan Psych Out, & Expropriation or Payday?
The NBNDP will elect a new Interim Leader this Saturday after a crushing defeat at the polls. We’re joined by Chris Thompson, a candidate for the job, to talk about his role in building party infrastructure and the long road ahead.
We reported in November that the House of Commons voted unanimously for NDP MP Heather McPherson’s motion to extend student loan reprieve through the summer. We cheered, millions of Canadians sighed with relief, and then.... nothing happened. Nearly a month after the vote, payments are being taken and nearly 200,000 Canadians have filed for payment support.
Its no secret that urban centers have become havens for the elite. Toronto and Vancouver are unaffordable for all but the ultra-wealthy and commuting is becoming more and more difficult. The City of Vancouver is fighting housing costs by expropriating derelict properties for conversion to affordable housing. Except, are they really? Or are they just buying them from the slumlords who hold them?

The Liberals gave delivered the Fall Economic Update, chock full of corporate welfare and without mention of the problems that plague working Canadians. The NDP response reflected the politics that we deserve, and the Conservatives grandstanded on issues that matter to mostly no one. How can we move forward?
COVID-19 has shown us that global problems require global solutions. Nation states are simply not positioned to solve the challenges that transcend boundaries, our international institutions reflect the will of governments (from democracies to dictatorships) and cannot possibly move us towards righting our world in the face of nationalism. We need a United Nations Parliamentary Assembly on the path to a global governing body to advance humanity.
The situation for invisible workers in Canada is bleak. Migrant farmers, exempted from many of the few protections Canadian workers enjoy, have become casualties of this pandemic. They deserve better than imprisonment and near slavery.

Neil McLaughlin studied at Cleveland State University and the City University of New York. He was educated as an intellectual in the social circles around Dissent magazine, the Socialist Scholars Conference in New York, and the American Democratic Socialist movement.

Last night, the Green Party establishment expelled her from the race for “bringing the party into disrepute” just days before voting is set to begin.
This is an affront to democracy and everything a party that claims to be built on grassroots stands for. It is in direct opposition to millions of Canadian voices calling for needed change.
