  • Knowing your vision helps in the hiring process.
  • We all have values and expectations. You need to know how to communicate them and develop them within your business because your values and common sense are not always the same as others.
  • In a traditional business, job/role descriptions are common, but they don’t mean much. In smaller businesses, people may be hired, but their role is not particularly clear.
  • After establishing expectations, integrate them into conversations, feedback, and other results-focused interactions.
  • Performance is not an opinion.
  • Get buy-in at the beginning of someone’s tenure in their position so anytime they meet or do not meet expectations—especially when they do not meet expectations—it does not need to feel like a personal issue.

  • If you could get every listener to start doing something THIS week to help them be a better leader, what would it be? 1. Have a compelling reason or vision for doing what you do, 2. clarify your values and expectations, 3. make sure your team members have clear roles and responsibilities, 4. make sure there are measures to track contribution, and 5. follow through and provide feedback.
  • As a general life principle, is it better to ask “why?” or “why not?” “Why?” because of being challenged to see the connections between things as a child.
