EP023: Improving Professional
Play • 48 min

In this episode I’ll take a look at what ‘professional’ looks like when it comes to horse care…I’ll look at what I call the factory-training business model and why we need to change it…. …I’ll share a bit of my story of when I reinvented myself and how that benefitted my horses and why it’s so important that heart-centered horse professionals learn how to thrive in the horse business… not just so they can have a fulfilling sustainable and profitable life they can LOVE… but because it directly influences the quality of life of horses.

This pod is brought to you by For The Love Of The Horse: Transform Your Business. When the heart-centered professionals thrive, so do the horses. For more information on how I help people with their horse businesses go to dressagenaturally.net/professionals

Feeling and Finding The Correct Diagonal in the Trot
Landing on the correct diagonal can be hit and miss for many riders. Let’s face it, there’s a chance you’ll get it right 50% of the time! And while most riders are pretty well versed on their diagonals in the trot… It’s ‘feeling’ the diagonal that causes confusion. Trotting has a two-time beat. The 1,2,1,2,1,2,1,2,1,2 that you experience and feel when you’re in the saddle. If you do sitting trot, it will result in a sit, sit, sit, sit, sit, sit, sit, sit rhythm. However, most riders can ‘tire’ a little when it comes to riding a constant sitting trot! And so, we learn to post or rise in the trot. The 1,2,1,2,1,2 is matched with an up,down,up,down,up,down of the riders backside. The rhythm of up-downs and the rhythm of the trot are a perfect match. The Correct Diagonal The reason your horse creates the 1,2, rhythm in the trot is because of how he moves his legs while he is trotting. The right-back foot moves with the front left foot. This is the ‘1’ part of the rhythm. Then the left-back foot moves with the right front foot. This is the ‘2’ part of the rhythm. The trot is very ‘even’ with regards to what is moving where… This is also the reason it can be hard to ‘feel’ what diagonal you are on at any given point! The correct diagonal is when you are moving with the inside hind leg - and, by association, outside front leg - of your horse. There is a little rhyme, ‘rise and fall with the shoulder by the wall’. That about sums it up. As your horse's outside shoulder is forward, you want to be ‘up’. As this shoulder moves back, you want to be down. I have a post and an episode HERE about how to identify the correct diagonal through sight and voice... Read More... The Connection Between Bodily Sensation & The Emotional Brain
It’s a raw, uncut, unedited podcast for you this week! I had planned to release a different episode, but we made an executive decision to hold that off for a couple of weeks’ time (super excited to bring that to you then!). In the meantime, I had two options: * Leave the podcast for this week and have a two-week gap * Roll with whatever came up even if I didn’t have time to present it as a perfect package Given this is here with you now, I have gone with the latter. So here it is for you, my Sunday morning conversation around the nature of sensation and the relationship it has with our emotional brain and motor patterns and function (isn’t this what everyone muses over when they are having their Sunday morning coffee?). What’s the deal with all of that? Here’s a brief breakdown. Many of us find ourselves in groundhog day experiences with our horses based on certain feelings or sensations that arise in the body. Whilst those sensations can feel concrete and absolute, they are inherently subjective. Think of them as a mash-up of everything you have thought, experienced, or been told in relation to a similar experience in the past. What then happens is that our body registers a certain feeling in response to the environment, and we label that feeling based on something that has happened in the past. That labeling or thought process then triggers a motor response and we find ourselves acting out the same experiences on a repetitive loop. In order to move away from that, there are some key things we need to consider: * Our associations with sensation and discomfort in the body as a whole, and the decoupling of stories and labels around them * The secondary gain we experience from what we would primarily understand as negative behavior or experience * The true meaning of sensation and how we can use that to bring ourselves more into the present We discuss all this and more in this episode!

Episode 19: Hunting Methods
We are back with season two of the Hunting Dog Confidential podcast. In the first season, we answered the question of “what dogs are used as hunting dogs?” We looked at various breeds and types of dogs that are hunted all over the world, both in the modern day as well as throughout history. Now, we turn our attention to the “how.” How are dogs used and what are the various methods of hunting with dogs? Since the beginning of the human-dog partnership, dogs assisted humans in finding game, pursuing game, catching game, and bringing that game back to the hunter. We still see these behaviors today, whether it’s pointing dogs, flushing dogs, sight hounds, scent hounds, spitz dogs, terriers, or retrievers. Dogs use their superior senses to enhance the human hunter’s ability to locate and ultimately kill prey. We will introduce a slight change in format for this season by welcoming guests onto the podcast. These experts will share their firsthand knowledge in a variety of hunting methods. For this episode, we introduce these various methods as a bit of a teaser for what’s to come. For bird dog owners, the most common method of hunting is with a bird dog and a shotgun. But hunting with a bird dog might look a little different in North America as compared to continental Europe or the United Kingdom. Special training techniques reflect the normal behavior of the native birds, which partly explains why Pointers are bred to be unerringly steady upon finding and pointing a bird. Falconry introduces another element: the care and training of a bird of prey. The dogs must be trained to work cooperatively with the bird in a way that’s effective for the hunt and safe for the bird. Big game hunting is often done with hunting dogs, whether that’s versatile hunting dogs being used on driven deer hunts in Europe or packs of hounds being used on bear or mountain lion in North America. Small game hunting takes many forms, whether that’s squirrel hunting with a feist, raccoon hunting with coonhounds, or chasing rabbits with beagles. In the UK, ferreting rabbits is frequently done with a dog that can catch the rabbits once they are chased out of their warren by the ferret. The bottom line is that dogs solved the question of “how,” both for the ancient human nomadic hunter as well as the modern dog enthusiast who is looking for recreation and purpose. Our dogs can take us on a pretty incredible journey if we are smart enough to follow them. As always, we thank you for listening and invite you to submit feedback or questions to us at HDC@northwoodscollective.com . We would love to feature your questions in an upcoming episode!
