2. The Joy of Movement | with Kelly McGonigal
Play • 58 min

If you’re in a workout rut, our guest today has the answer — and motivation — you need!

Kelly McGonigal is a health psychologist, author, and lecturer at Stanford University who specializes in understanding the mind-body connection — and her TED Talk, “How to Make Stress Your Friend,” has over 21 million views! As a pioneer in the field of "science-help," her mission is to translate insights from psychology and neuroscience into practical strategies that support personal well-being and strengthen communities.

Her bestselling books are based on classes at Stanford, all backed by research. The Willpower Instinct is based on her popular psychology course The Science of Willpower and The Upside of Stress began as Living Well With Stress.

Her latest book, The Joy of Movement, explores how physical exercise can be a powerful antidote to the modern epidemics of anxiety, depression, and loneliness. Kelly describes the book as “at once a love letter to movement and to human nature, including our remarkable abilities to persist, cooperate, and experience transcendence,” and you’re going to learn all about it in today’s episode.

I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek of this inspirational read, and I can assure you that this is one book you will want in your collection. Not only is Kelly herself incredibly relatable but the science in her book and this episode is incredibly motivational!

You will learn about...

  • The gifts that movement give to us (1:30)
  • How you can use exercise to prepare yourself for whatever it is you want to do (3:00)
  • The power of music and its role in the psychology of exercise (6:00)
  • The science behind group flow yoga experiences (9:00)
  • How exercise can make us happier and more resilient (13:00)
  • Why exercise is a powerful antidepressant (16:00)
  • Hope molecules and how Kelly learned to love her muscles (21:30)
  • How different forms of exercise mimic different kinds of mind-altering drugs + why you don’t need to run to get a runner’s high (24:45)
  • What happens when you exercise outdoors (34:40)
  • How physical activity helps you think differently about yourself and what you’re capable of doing (41:00)
  • How writing The Joy of Movement changed how Kelly teaches (52:20)
  • Two things you can do every day to nourish your body, nourish your brain, and increase your connection to others (57:00)

137: Anxiety, Gut Health, Medical Freedom and Some of the Best Health Hacks
In this fully packed episode, we chat with Dr. Nichole Morris about a variety of topics around women’s health, including some of the best lifestyle hacks and strategies that we can implement in our day-to-day life for overall vitality. You can find all the info and links about this episode at Topics Discussed in this Episode: * Root cause medicine * The connection between anxiety and gut health * The causes of anxiety * Homeopathy and biotherapeutic drainage * The role the liver plays in our healing * Lifestyle hacks for overall vitality * Medical freedom and transparency in healthcare * The PAR-Q * Why 5G could be harmful to our health Key Takeaways: * Human beings are complex. We’re a physical body, but we’re also a mental, emotional and spiritual body. The three all work together, and they’re so intertwined. * Gut health and emotional trauma are the biggest places where anxiety comes into play. * Homeopathy is the concept of “like cures like”. * Biotherapeutic drainage is a combination of low-dose multiple remedies that work down to the cellular level to open up the cells and drain them of the toxic burden that they’re holding on to. * Medical freedom is having the ability to choose what goes in and on your body, what medications you choose and don’t choose, and what surgery you want to have or not have. * 5G means fifth generation cellular communication data. It can also mean the frequency or gigahertz. * 5G from your phone is a much higher frequency than what we see in 4G and WiFi in a smaller wave. Because the waves are small, they don’t penetrate large things. For this reason, we need small cell towers up to every 500 feet or closer. The wavelength can penetrate millimeters into the skin surface. Action Steps: * Lifestyle hacks: * Use castor oil packs to support your liver. * Do skin brushing. * Practice four square breathing. * Take cold showers. * Turn your phone off at night or at least put it on airplane mode. * Spend time in nature. * Give yourself a “Mental Health Day” once in a while. * Eat “real” food. * Drink a lot of water. * Take supplements. * Move your body as much as you can. * Build boundaries with toxic people. Nichole said: “Most of our physical ailments or disease or disturbance in our body comes from an emotional sphere.” “My goal is to make sure people have the information that they need to make very informed healthcare decisions. And in a time like 2020 and 2021, I think we are seeing an emergence of the importance of you -- the individual, the listener -- being your own best doctor.” Thanks for listening! 252: 5-Minute Wellness Routines to Feel Good Now w/ Robyn Downs
If You Want to Create Your Own 5 Minute Wellness Routine You Should: * Acknowledge your striving mindset and the differences found in a feel-good mindset * Shift your mindset by taking actionable steps to put yourself into a feel-good state * Allow yourself time to focus on how you feel rather than be productive * Customize your routine to fit into your daily schedule and create habits that enforce that routine Have you spent your 20’s going non-stop, only to feel the physical burden of your constant busyness now? Often times we don't even realize how bad we feel because we get used to it as our ‘normal’. But the truth is, self-care is a non-negotiable for survival, and you deserve a minute to pause and take care of yourself. The Feel-Good Effect With Robyn Downs Robyn Downs has been in the same position you are. Robyn has dedicated her life to spreading the feel-good effect. Using simple, science-backed strategies, Robyn helps people implement small hinges that can create big change when it comes to their emotional and physical wellbeing. Her work taps into cutting-edge science and psychology, neuroscience, mindfulness, and habits to help you find more calm, ease, and joy in your life right now. Gentle Is the New Perfect Robyn lives by the motto that ‘gentle is the new perfect’. By rejecting the striving mindset that so many of us have been caught up in, Robyn wants you to focus on what feels good instead. The feel-good mindset focuses on self-compassion, flexible thinking, and gratitude, the exact opposite of the striving mindset. Despite what you may have been told, being kind to yourself will not make you lazy or a quitter. But it will allow you to stop striving for perfectionism and make space for joy and rest in your daily life. Get in Where You Fit In You may think that you don't have time for self-care or to take a break. With Robyn’s 5-minute wellness routine, you can practice shifting your mindset for just an instant and see what a world of difference it can make. Robyn’s system puts into place actionable ways that you can put yourself into a feel-good state. By practicing the 4 R’s, revive, refresh, restore and rest, you can customize how it works into your life in as little as 5 minutes. The beauty in Robyn’s method is that it allows you to stop being productive and take some time to create actions and habits that are solely related to how you feel. Can you relate to our stories today? Are you feeling the physical repercussions of busyness and are ready to create small changes to support your brain and body? Share how you will create more ease in your life through a 5-minute wellness routine with me in the comments section of the episode page. Quotes: “If you are going to make long-term sustainable change, you need the mindset and you need the habits and routines. And often what we do is we try to say we need better habits or we need this routine, which is wonderful… but the thing that was actually standing in my way was mindset.” (9:21) “The antidote to the striving mindset is the feel-good mindset, and that is self-compassion, flexible thinking, and gratitude.” (16:00) “In terms of feeling good, the place to start is to start awareness about how you feel and how you want to feel. Which sounds pretty basic, but most of us have not learned how to do that.” (23:51) “I kept playing with the idea of ‘what is the shortest amount of time I can give this for the biggest impact?’, and I did find that five minutes, it's not about the amount of time, it's the energy that comes from it.” (32:15) “It’s not about adding another thing to your to-do list, it’s a way that you ground yourself so that you can be here and feel good. That’s how you stay out of the burnout trap altogether.” (38:21) In This Episode * Learn why perfectionism and comparison thinking is standing in your way (9:45) * How to navigate and reorient what it means to have it all (15:43) * Tangible practices that can cement a feel-good mindset instead of a striving mindset (18:52) * Tips for creating your personalized 5-minute wellness routine (31:15) * Suggestions of rituals that you can relish in to make time for you where it fits into your life (35:45) Resources Mentioned: Register for the Perimenopause and Menopause Relief Summit The Feel Good Effect by Robyn Downs Real Food Whole Life Website The Feel Good Effect Podcast Join the Real Food Whole Life Community Follow Robyn on Instagram | Pinterest Related Episodes: Essentially You Episode #149: Why Mindfulness and Mindset Are Key To Healing Miracles with Elaina Ray Other Resources: Check out the full show notes page Keep up with everything Dr. Mariza Follow Dr. Mariza on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Youtube Podcast production & marketing support by the team at Counterweight Creative

EP49 | SIBO Relapse, Retreatment & Prevention + New Therapy Ideas That Give Us Hope with Dr. Allison Siebecker
We are ending the podcast where we began: with the incredible Dr. Allison Siebecker. In this wind-down episode, I wanted to cover some frequently asked questions around relapse, retreatment and prevention. So many people end up in cycles of SIBO that they feel they will never exit from. But there is so much to be hopefully about, even for chronic SIBO cases, and this conversation really shows why. Not only does Dr. Siebecker help troubleshoot some scenarios of stubborn SIBO, she gives an overview of an entire new toolkit of therapies that have shown incredible clinical results. None of these ideas involve aggressive herbals or antibiotics—in fact, very few require any pills at all. Even if you feel you know everything there is to know about SIBO, I assure you this episode will open your mind to a whole new world of healing. A quick taste of what we’ll cover: * How many courses of herbs and antibiotics are too many * What are the signs that someone is reacting to a treatment itself or die-off * How long do you wait to retest after treatment? And when is retesting not worth it * When to start prokinetics and how long to take them for * A whole arsenal of new therapies: Frequency Specific Microcurrent, Neural retraining systems, Neural therapy, Electrical stimulation, Myofascial release, Craniosacral therapy, Hypnotherapy, Immunoglobulins, Low Dose Immunotherapy, Peptides, Tapping and more! Resources, mentions and notes: * The SIBO Made Simple Book – ON SHELVES NOW!! * Submit your book receipt to join Gut Heal Bootcamp on 1/18 * Sign up for my Low FODMAP Cooking Classes (1/27 is Italian Stallion!) * Pay it forward: write a book review on Amazon to support my work (you don't have to have bought it there) * Join the SIBO Made Simple Facebook Community Page * Subscribe to the newsletter (and receive a free low FODMAP cookbook) * Follow me on Instagram to keep the conversation going * Dr. Siebecker's Website * Dr. Siebecker’s New Therapies for Treating SIBO Summit * Bysmouth biofilm remedies: Paul Anderson’s formula, Priority Biofilm Phase 2 Advanced * Carol McMakin – FSM * Gupta Program + DNRS This episode is brought to you by SIBO Made Simple – THE BOOK! How To Stop Self-Sabotage When You Are TTC
Devon Baeza joins us today as we're digging self-sabotage and why this matters for fertility. By January 19th most of us have already given up our New Years' resolution. I know…my chip habit is back (gluten-free and organic but still…lol). And even if you are still pushing through you may be dealing with self-sabotage. We set the goal to eat better, get more sleep, exercise more, and work on our stress, and then life gets in the way…. and next thing we know we’re yelling at our partner, eating the processed foods, and up at 3 am scouring the internet looking for answers. And it all just feels exhausting. This quote by Jim Rohn sums it up “your life does not get better by chance, but by change”. That’s why our Fab Fertile Method includes a Functional Nutrition Practitioner (who develops a customized protocol) and a Fertility Coach (that helps you to implement the changes) so that you can fast track your chances of a successful pregnancy. What can you do to recognize and eliminate self-sabotage so that you can prepare for pregnancy success without wasting time? I'm excited to welcome Devon Baeza back to the podcast. Devon is the Fertility Finance Coach. She combines her degree in finance, years of fertility treatments, and master life coach training to help women make, save, and manifest money to fund their future family FAST.
