2. The Joy of Movement | with Kelly McGonigal
58 min

If you’re in a workout rut, our guest today has the answer — and motivation — you need!

Kelly McGonigal is a health psychologist, author, and lecturer at Stanford University who specializes in understanding the mind-body connection — and her TED Talk, “How to Make Stress Your Friend,” has over 21 million views! As a pioneer in the field of "science-help," her mission is to translate insights from psychology and neuroscience into practical strategies that support personal well-being and strengthen communities.

Her bestselling books are based on classes at Stanford, all backed by research. The Willpower Instinct is based on her popular psychology course The Science of Willpower and The Upside of Stress began as Living Well With Stress.

Her latest book, The Joy of Movement, explores how physical exercise can be a powerful antidote to the modern epidemics of anxiety, depression, and loneliness. Kelly describes the book as “at once a love letter to movement and to human nature, including our remarkable abilities to persist, cooperate, and experience transcendence,” and you’re going to learn all about it in today’s episode.

I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek of this inspirational read, and I can assure you that this is one book you will want in your collection. Not only is Kelly herself incredibly relatable but the science in her book and this episode is incredibly motivational!

You will learn about...

  • The gifts that movement give to us (1:30)
  • How you can use exercise to prepare yourself for whatever it is you want to do (3:00)
  • The power of music and its role in the psychology of exercise (6:00)
  • The science behind group flow yoga experiences (9:00)
  • How exercise can make us happier and more resilient (13:00)
  • Why exercise is a powerful antidepressant (16:00)
  • Hope molecules and how Kelly learned to love her muscles (21:30)
  • How different forms of exercise mimic different kinds of mind-altering drugs + why you don’t need to run to get a runner’s high (24:45)
  • What happens when you exercise outdoors (34:40)
  • How physical activity helps you think differently about yourself and what you’re capable of doing (41:00)
  • How writing The Joy of Movement changed how Kelly teaches (52:20)
  • Two things you can do every day to nourish your body, nourish your brain, and increase your connection to others (57:00)

131: How to Take Control of Your Life and Boost Your Confidence
What does it take to be in control of your life? Where can you find the confidence that you need? Nutritionist and educator Jane Durst-Pulkys shares her journey of battling self-doubt, overcoming her lack of self-esteem, and building her confidence. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode131. Topics Discussed in this Episode: * Jane’s journey toward boosting her confidence * Working with empowering afformations * The 7 Chakras * The technique to uncover where energy is blocked * The 7 deadly words * Rewiring the brain * The common excuses that people come up with * Where nutrition comes into play with rewiring the brain and boosting your confidence Key Takeaways: * Your issues are in your tissues. * Homeopathy allows you to figure out where the energy is blocked in your body and how to get rid of it. * Life is supposed to be a joyful experience, but when there are these energy blocks in the body, people aren’t able to fully live the life that they’re looking for. * When you feel confident, every cell in your body radiates that confidence. * Words are either disabling or enabling. How you speak to yourself is very important. How you talk to other people impacts every cell in your body. * The 7 deadly words are the following: can’t, should, if, or, need, must, and try. * Studies have shown that if you were to spend 10 to 20 minutes in a meditation or a contemplation type of exercise, it allows your body to calm down, and it allows for more creativity to flow through. * For you to feel good inside, you have to have amazing energy. * There are 5 new food groups available today: frozen, fried, fast, junk, and processed. There’s also a lot of CRAP - carbonated, refined, addictive, and processed foods. But if you want to feel amazing, you need to eat whole, live foods. Action Steps: * Figure out what’s holding you back and utilize your full potential. * Be kind to yourself. * Love yourself. * Think about what you say and how you say it. * Take some time for yourself and do some meditation. * Subscribe to the 80-20 rule when it comes to nutrition. It’s what you eat 80% of the time that matters the most. Jane said: “I think it’s really criminal to be a man or a woman in this world and to not have that joy and that feeling of [having] your own life in your hands.” “We need to help each other. We need to compliment each other. And if we all were kinder to ourselves, then we could all be more empowered to feel better about ourselves.” Thanks for listening! How Racial Identity Can Impact Your Relationship With Food w/ SharRon Jamison
Learning how to put yourself in someone else’s shoes is critical for understanding the political, pathological, and personal ways in which black women and women of color experience their relationship to food. The truth is, food affects people differently, especially when it comes to their racial identity, and it is only by shedding the societal ‘should’s’ and outdated believes that we can soar higher. Key Takeaways If You Want To Better Understand Why Food Is Political, Pathological, and Personal You Should: * Hold space for the anger of black women and women of color * Stand with black women and women of color in solidarity * Do not shrink into shame but instead shine in power * Ask how best you can support black women and women of color * Become committed to the sisterhood and stop living from a scarcity mindset * Understand the lasting effects of food insecurity and racism * Create space for people to work through their pain without trying to rescue them * Embrace the incredible journey of discovering your own soul * Let go of the beliefs that undermine your gifts and strengths Putting Yourself in Someone Else’s Shoes with SharRon Jamison SharRon Jamison is a teacher, leader, minister, author, entrepreneur, and life strategist who is passionate about helping others be who they were born to be instead of settling for what society has told them to be. Through her own experience with racial injustice, eating disorders, and the patriarchy, SharRon breaks down boundaries and exposes inequalities so that women can come together and heal as a community. Down With the Patriarchy The patriarchy that we have been socialized into thrives by pitting women against each other and forcing a scarcity mindset. We are told not to trust other women and to compete with them as if there is only room for one of us at the top. While there is evidence of a light being turned on in America, we are still at the beginning stages of this illumination. SharRon sees the first step to dismantling the patriarchy as white women coming together and standing with black women and women of color. Next, we need to embrace our ability to not shrink in shame but rather to shine in our power. Thirdly, white cis-gendered people need to be vocal about asking marginalized communities how they can provide support. Finally, by being committed to the sisterhood, we can spread the education necessary to stop wounding people of color. Racism, Food, and the Diet Industry Food is political, can be pathological, and is very personal. Many things may impact your ability to be healthy that are not directly in your control. This plays into the patriarchal system by keeping those oppressed and giving them very little opportunity to rise up from that oppression. The BUGS (beliefs that undermine your strengths and gifts) that society has told you to believe are true are keeping people suffering. SharRon wants you to remember who you were before society told you that you were not enough, and work to help others without the same privileges to stop being ignored by this broken system. Equip yourself with the tools, remember who you are, and advocate for other people so that we can step into the illumination that so many desperately need to see. Have you ever connected the dots between systematic oppression, patriarchy, diet culture, and racism? Share how you are working to heal the ‘sister wound’ through sisterhood in the comments on the episode page. In This Episode * The four steps that you can take to come together with other women and heal the collective wounds of the patriarchy (9:03) * Personal ways that being a black woman has altered SharRon’s relationship with food (15:29) * Why food carries different political, pathological, and personal weight for women of color (18:32) * How your racial background and socioeconomic status can impact your health and wellbeing (24:01) * The importance of decolonizing your thinking and connecting your history to your density (28:15) Quotes “We are being used as puppets to wound each other. And when we are aware of what is happening, we will stop wounding each other and start winning with each other and change the entire status quo.” (8:05) “Just like a fish does not know they are swimming in water, sometimes we do not know that we are swimming in this toxic pool called white supremacy.” (11:32) “I think that it is really, really important that people see how racism touches every aspect of their lives. So now, a lot of black women are not getting help, and anytime you don’t get help, you don’t get hope.” (18:10) “People are hurting, and it is overlooked because when you are a person of color, you don’t have visibility. Or you are deemed as less valuable. So I feel pain, but I also feel pride. I feel pride because, despite limited resources, people find a way.” (24:42) “Who were you before society told you who you were? You were amazing before you were socialized to be second class, before racism, before sexism, before ableism. You came to the world amazing, greatness is in your DNA!” (28:47) Links Join the Tune In Membership Here SharRon Jamison Website What Not To Say To Women Of Color by SharRon Jamison Dare To Be Me Program Deciding To Soar 2: Unwrapping Your Purpose by SharRon Jamison Follow SharRon on Facebook | Instagram Join the Listen To Your Body Newsletter Steph Gaudreau Website Check out the full show notes here! Dr. Stephen Cabral
1759: Collagen Deficiency, Soaking Seeds & Nuts, Whole House Air Filter, Medical Procedure Cleanse, Dairy-Free Probiotic (HouseCall)
Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I’m looking forward to sharing with you some of our community’s questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Let’s get started! Kelsey: Collagen deficiencies run in my family. The females get really saggy skin, especially all over the legs and I’ve noticed my upper eyes are having the first signs of drooping. I take collagen supplements but I just read something about collagen not being absorbed unless taken with silica. Is this true? Can you recommend any anti-aging tips for better collagen production or just general anti-aging recommendations? Lara: Hi, dr. Cabral:)My question is regarding soaking nuts & seeds.. there are so many contradictory information out there, I’m really confused..Some say everything should be soaked to minimise the phytic acid and encime inhibitors, others that some nuts and seeds don’t have to be (cashews, Brazil nuts, pistachios, pine nuts, smaller seeds like sesame, chia, linseed, hemp seeds..)..Which info is correct and why? Then you read that it should be soaked in a water with a little salt in it, but a nutritionist I asked said that binds the minerals in them and takes it out of the nuts so it’s not recommended..?Then there are so many different information on how long to soak which nuts/seeds/grains/legumes.. how long is best for which? Then, some say to soak in a refrigerator, others not to..How about roasting them after? Does that take away any of the nutrients?Or just leaving them soaked and probably refrigerated so they don’t go bad?Basically I’m interested in all information about this topic but don’t know where to find it because everyone says different stuff..Also, is it bad to eat lots of these..?Thank you so much, as always, you are a lifesaver! Lots of love to everyone healing out there.. Katharina: I wanted to first thank you for all your teaching! I am almost finished with IHP Level 2 and have learned so much! I am an RN in a busy Boston hospital and it has been quite a year. I am using the knowledge gained in IHP for my family and beginning a small practice helping others get their health back! What I haven't heard throughout (And with so many podcasts I have probably just missed it) is about air filters. I am currently working my way through the whole podcast list and have searched for air filters and listened to those. I know you recommend a couple of freestanding ones, but what about just putting HEPA filters on your forced hot air system for the house? My husband asked me when I told him I wanted to buy an IQ Air and I was a bit stumped at why IQ air is better... He sort of just lets me do whatever crazy health stuff I want, but I want a solid answer to stand behind here! Can I just put a filter on the heat/air conditioning system I have now and filter the whole house at once? Ivana: Hi Dr Cabral,Two years ago at age 22, I was diagnosed with Crohn's and had to have 5cm of my small intestine removed due to a stricture. I am fully in remission, no medications, sticking to the kind of lifestyle you promote and doing great. I did the CBO protocol and I'm now on the CBO finisher, I cannot thank you enough for creating something like this protocol, it did wonders for me and I can't believe something so simple made such a huge difference! Although I feel great now, I know that at some point in a year or two I will need to do a colonoscopy or an MR enterography to check on my intestines. As you probably now, when preparing for such a procedure, they give you a bunch of aggressive laxatives that are artificially flavoured and full of additives. How harmful is this in terms of wiping out the good bacteria in the intestines? Would there be any alternative way of cleaning your intestines, for instance, drinking just liquids and shakes for two days and then taking some more natural laxatives? Would it be useful to do the CBO protocol after the procedure?Thank you for all the work you do, the fact that the information you share and your 3 months protocol helped me more than 7 years of doctors' appointments says it all. All the best! Brianna: Hello,So, my doctor recommended me to go on the Candida diet and I noticed there’s a Candida & Bacterial Optimizer (CBO) protocol and I definitely want to try this due to the fact I’m having a hard time coming up with meals to eat, however, I did notice one of the probiotics does have milk in it and I have been vegan / plant based for almost 5 years now and don’t have dairy so is there any way I could get this protocol without the probiotic that’s on there that has milk? I am currently taking a probiotic from my doctor and the strains are the same minus 2 strains.
