Overcoming a Love/Hate Relationship with the Beach: Pam Uzzell
Today’s guest is Pam Uzzell, the creator and host of Art Heals All Wounds - a podcast that’s changing the world - one artist at a time.
Pam and I met as members of the “pod squad,” - the slack community created by Squadcast - a remote podcast platform we use to record our shows.
Pam reached out to me a few months ago with a wonderful story about her love-hate relationship with the beach. It starts out in childhood and ends in her adulthood - with the series of events in between that helped shape and form her sense of self-worth and belonging.
It’s a self-described rom-com of sorts.
We talk about the differences between East Coast and West Coast beaches, how relationships reflect who we think we are or should be, and all the ways we listen to the beach - not just with our ears, but deep within our body - and soul.
Here’s Pam’s story of how her love/hate relationship with the beach became a profound lesson in love, acceptance, and belonging - when she finally chose to listen!

Jamaican Beach Lifeguard Vibes: Stories of Heroic Rescues, Coconut Climbing, and Scuba Adventures with Oneike Jackson
My guest today is Oneike Jackson, the beach manager at the Boardwalk Beach Resort in Negril, Jamaica. I have to say, after editing this episode, I couldn’t stop smiling! His high-vibe Jamaican energy is just that palpable.
Oneike is a great storyteller; however, he did not want to come on the podcast at first. He was shy, and he didn’t know what to say - but his partner Cathi, who has been on the podcast numerous times, said “Don’t worry, Paige is so easy to talk to - it will be fun!” And true enough, when I got him talking, the conversation was. . . jammin’!
One of the things I admire so much about Oneike is that he's not afraid to admit that when trying something new that makes him nervous - his way is to acknowledge it and then "do the 'ting.”
Also, I will NOT close my eyes the next time I get on a water slide!
He is very proud of his island home and eager to share its unique vibe with everyone who visits. It makes me want to hop on a plane and head to Jamaica - right now.

5 Beach Reads For Your Perfect Beach Escape - Anytime, Anywhere!
I have a slight obsession with books. My house is filled with stacks of unread novels, coffee table books, and hidden gems waiting to be explored. But today, I want to focus on a specific genre that holds a special place in my heart: beach reads!
A good beach read is more than just a book you read while lounging on the sand. It's a book that transports you to the beach no matter where you are. It's a chance to let go of everyday stress and immerse yourself in a world of relaxation and adventure. And with summer coming to a close, there's no better time to indulge in beachy literary escapism.
Here are five beach reads that are speaking to me right now:
1. *On Fire Island *by Jane L. Rosen - This is the perfect example of a book I bought because I heard about it on a podcast! Thsi time it was mine! For more, check out Episode 68: On Fire Island: A Journey of Love, Loss, and Resilience with author Jane Rosen.
2. *Beach House Memories*, by Mary Alice Monroe, is the sequel to The Beach House I read earlier this summer. Reading this second book will be like coming back for another summer visit with friends.
3. *Silo* by Hugh Howey - I don’t typically go for dystopian post-apocalyptic science fiction when I want to relax, but after binging the first series on Apple TV, I have to read the books now!
4. *When We Believed in Mermaids* by Barbara O’Neal. This title popped up on a friend’s Facebook post, and I just had to add it to my list because, well, mermaids!
5. *Florida’s Golden Galleon’s - The Search for the 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet* - by Robert F. Burgess and Carl J. Clausen This book is perfect for history and treasure hunting fans.
Remember, a beach read doesn't have to be a physical book. Travel magazines about your favorite beach destinations can be just as captivating. And who can resist a good audiobook during a long drive to the coast?
Whether lounging on a sun-soaked beach or simply dreaming of the ocean, good beach reads will transport you to a world of relaxation and wonder.
Even if you can't physically be at the beach, pick up a beach read off your shelf or pick one up at your local bookseller (it feels good to support small businesses) and let your mind escape to sandy shores.

The Curse of Hawaiian Black Beach Sand and the Thrill of Collecting Shells, Sand and Souvenirs at the Beach with Jenny
“One cannot collect all the beautiful shells on the beach. One can only collect a few. One moon shell is more impressive than three. There is only one moon in the sky.” ― Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Gift from the Sea
It’s hard to think about going to the beach and not wanting to take a little something with you to remember being there. It’s like the shore has this magnetic pull, urging you to pick up a seashell or some other treasure and take it home.
But what if you found out that if you took that little piece of the beach - you would be cursed?
On this episode of The Beach Speaks, my guest, Jenny Paul, and I discuss the joys of collecting shells, sand, and souvenirs at the beach. Jenny shares her experiences collecting sand from various beaches worldwide, including the fascinating pink sand of Bermuda and the black sand of Volcanoes National Park in Hawaii.
We reminisce about her connection to the beach, including childhood memories of losing a water shoe and the recent discovery of a silver dog tag on the beach etched with the words "authentic self." She shares a story of collecting something at the beach that might be cursed, adding an intriguing twist to our conversation. All these experiences lead us to reflect on the profound meaning of the things we find on the beach.
I’m so happy that Jenny agreed to share her story of the cursed sand because, sometimes, a “curse” can actually be a blessing! Although neither of us expected that our conversation would take such an existential turn - it did bring up some interesting questions that I’m sure the beach has been asking me, but I guess I haven’t been paying attention - until now.

Connected to the Beach with Amanda Soler
My guest today is Amanda Soler; the creator and host of the SolFul Connections podcast.
It seems appropriate that her podcast is called SoFul Connections because Amanda embodies connecting on a soul level; it's in her DNA.
I noticed this from the moment we first met - on the virtual social forum Clubhouse; I'm not sure in what “room” we connected or what the discussion was, but what I am sure of is why - it was our soul's connection to the Beach. Of course, that’s what the beach Speaks is all about, right? Stories about our connection to the beach!
When Amanda left me a voicemail on my website asking if I would be interested in "cross-pollinating" our podcasts - I would be a guest on hers, and she would be a guest on mine - I thought: what a brilliant idea to connect.

It's Seaweed Season and I'm Going to Cancun!
*How do you feel about seaweed?*
I bet you could smell it as soon as you heard me say the word!
When I think about the beaches here on the Atlantic coast, I never really considered that seaweed could be a problem.
*I only notice it when it's washed up in small patches along the shore or in the ocean - but it’s never really gotten in the way of my enjoying the beach.
*
On the Gulf Coast, however, when a specific type of seaweed piles up on shore, it’s an entirely different story. *For people wanting to enjoy a perfect beach day, it’s a smelly, unpleasant nuisance, and for some ocean life, it can be - deadly.*
Scientists following the rapidly growing collection of this Sargassum didn’t consider it too much of a threat to the coastline until recently; the seaweed collection generally stayed in the Atlantic Ocean.
However, around March this year reports started flooding the newfeeds of what had now become *an apocalyptic-sized 5,000-mile-wide patchwork of Sargassum clumps floating in the Atlantic -* making its way toward Florida and other coastlines alongGulf of Mexico, a giant blob of seaweed twice the width of the United States was now threatening to dump smelly and possibly harmful piles across the beaches.
I started to pay more attention to this massive “blob” of seaweed, thinking, “Wow, how awful it would be if that blob reached Cancun!”

Let's Talk "Beach Travel Wine" with: Lyle and Leanne
Is Australia on your beach bucket list? If it is, you’re going to really like today’s conversation with travel podcasters Lyle and Leanne, who *live on the beach in Australia! *
Their podcast is called Beach Travel Wine, and I first heard about it when Leanne sent me a message.
She told me that they sold their business and retired to travel, especially the beaches, all over the world - and of course, Australia. They downsized and bought a unit on the beach where they can see the ocean from every room and get to sleep to the sound of the waves.
Apparently, 90% of Australians live within 5km of the beach - so you can see how it's an important part of their lives. While Lyle and Leanne love going to the beach to swim and enjoy the water, one of their favorite things to do is wake up in the morning for a walk along the beach.
The beach is also about connecting with family. Having eight grandchildren it's the perfect place to come together.
At the time we recorded this episode Lyle and Leanne had just returned from a *14-day tour of Mexico that ended in - Cancun. * I was just about to travel there, so I was really interested to hear about it.
Something else that I really wanted to hear about was their experience *scuba diving and snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef* and going on a *"Reef Sleep"* where you sleep out on the deck of a pontoon boat miles from shore on the Reef.
It's just you, a few friends, and the ocean as the sun sets and the stars come out.
We talked about the best beaches in Australia, their travels to Spain, where they are traveling to next, and Lyle describes one of the beaches that many travelers dream of going to but, he thought was . . .well, kind of underrated.

I'm Out of My Comfort Zone! The Beach Speaks to Rich Roll
I was recently inspired to step out of my comfort zone and write a letter to someone that I deeply admire - my all-time favorite podcaster Rich Roll, host of the Rich Roll podcast.
Sitting down to write the letter, I thought - wouldn't it be fun to do it in audio form instead - podcaster to podcaster?
It makes sense because, you know me, I love podcasts! My friends joke that I’m always saying, “You know, I heard on a podcast…” and, more often than not, it’s the Rich Roll podcast.
For context: On EP 35 of The Beach Speaks, I talk about attending a retreat in Italy hosted by Rich and his wife, Julie. It’s a significant part of my story about meeting my soulmate, quitting my 9-5, and moving to the beach.

Lost and Found at the Beach: Connected to My iPhone
I was on the beach taking sunrise pictures with my new iPhone 14pro, and when I opened up my photo app to find some to post on Facebook, I glanced at the number under the “recent” file: 46,454! I wasn’t entirely shocked at the number, but it did make me think about *how I could have that many images on my phone!*
There’s a lot of talk about how our “smart phones” are making us “dumb” - stealing our attention and taking us away from the present moment, and honestly, there are times when I’m on the beach, I’ve had to remind myself to put away the phone and *just be*. However, I really love capturing moments at the beach with my “smartphone” and sharing those moments with you!

My Getaway to Jensen Beach and What the Beach Had To Say About It
When I think about my 2023 beach bucket list, the ones at the top are on the Gulf Coast - the ones on practically every travel guide’s top 10 Florida beaches, like Caya Costa, Captiva Island, Sanibel, Destin, and Pensacola.
Jensen Beach was not on my bucket list, but when I got a chance to go - even though I had a lot of work on the podcast left to do - how could I say no? When I hear "go to the beach," - I'm on my way!
I spent more time in the hotel room trying to edit and publish an episode, battling a series of tech issues, stressing out over some arbitrary deadline I created for myself - and missing out on precious time on the beach!
The beach was speaking to me - and I wasn’t listening.
I love exploring new beaches (and revisiting old ones) because each one has a different message for me - if I listen. What I don’t know, the beach knows.

Close Encounters of the Marine Kind part 2
This episode is a continuation of the theme, close encounters of a marine kind, from Episode 56, which I recorded with my friends, John and Jennifer.
I thought I’d start out telling one or two of my own stories of scuba diving with my family; I was certain that recalling these events would be like an easy drift dive in the crystal clear waters of a Florida Spring, however, as I sat down to take notes, it felt more like doggie - paddling in the murky water of my memories. I could recall the events - but few of the details!
I thought it might be helpful, and maybe a little more entertaining, if I invited my daughter, Baylee, and son, Austin, to join in on the conversation.

I just got back from a whirlwind week between Christmas and New years traveling around the Tampa area visiting our close friends - our "Tampa crew" - and a surprise visit to one of the gulf coast* beaches on my bucket list!* Anna Maria Island!
Also, stay tuned for more stories of marine encounters, including a surprise encounter with a *piranha* and a one-of-a-kind *dolphin sighting - **from an aircraft carrier!*

Close Encounters of the Marine Kind (Part One) with John Bailey and Jennifer Young
I was on an exercise power walk on the beach (which is really kind of a misnomer because I stop so much to take pictures and videos - I’m not sure how much “exercise” I’m getting!) brainstorming themes for the podcast when I began thinking about all the marine life in the ocean, which got me thinking about SCUBA diving, and of course, our friends John Bailey and his wife Jennifer Young immediately came to mind because, well - they are super into diving. Remember the commercial for Calgon bath powder? The one where a woman, totally frazzled and exhausted from the day's chaos, cries out: “Calgon, take me away!” Then she magically appears in a bubble bath, soaking in an oasis of relaxing healing water.

What's So Great About Maui? with Cathi Taucher
*Aloha Beach Lovers!* I’ve been talking a lot about the not so fun aspects of beach life - hurricanes. The Beach Spoke to Me in a Cat 4 Hurricane!
A friend of mine from “up North” asked me what’s it like to be in a hurricane? That got me thinking about my past 22 years living in Florida. How many hurricanes had I been in?
I grew up in the mountains of Pennsylvania. The only “natural disasters” I ever experienced were blizzards - which were fairly common and not all that disastrous. It wasn’t until I moved to Florida that I had ever been in an actual natural disaster - a hurricane.
I had just moved to Orlando when *four hurricanes* rolled through Florida - one right after the other:
Charlie, Francis, Ivan, and Jeanne.
Don’t you love how hurricanes have “everyday” names?
It makes sense to give hurricanes a name because it makes it really easy to talk about them later, like: “Remember when Andrew came one night and took our roof ?” Or, “Katrina - yeah - she was bad”
And, like people, hurricanes have different personalities, are difficult to predict, and you never quite know what they’re going to do.…

Ever since Hurricane Ian hit Florida a few weeks ago, I told you I would do an episode about what it’s like to be in a hurricane at the beach - and I fully intend to do that - soon, However, in the meantime, as I start collecting hurricane stories, I thought it might be interesting to hear from one of my fellow podcasters, Kevin Lowe, who lives a few hours south of us near Daytona Beach.

Greece Is Calling And I Must Go! with Ramona Crabtree-Falkner
Did I ever tell you about the time I ran away from summer camp to go to the beach? Well, I guess I might be a little dramatic - I didn’t really “run away.” It was more like I “wandered off.”
One summer when I was about 7 years old my parents joined a private boat club on the long island sound that had tennis, boating, and. . . a beach! We didn’t own a boat, but my parents were really into playing tennis. I couldn’t care less about that -* **the beach was calling, and I just had to go!*

"I Quit!" and How These Five Episodes Saved My Show
Welcome to my 50th episode!! Now you might be thinking, “Ok, 50 is a good number - but what makes it so special? Why not 100?” Well, here’s the deal, according to the latest podcasting statistics, in the past several years a LOT of podcasts started, but the truth is most of those shows are - dead. There are many good reasons why a show ends but most of the time it’s because people realize that podcasting can be really hard, and really lonely.
Then there’s this thing called “pod fade” where you get tired of all the effort and wonder “Is anybody listening?” and then, you just fade away. I heard that “pod fade” often hits you around the 50th episode. So, the fact that I made it to 50 and I’m still here means a lot, because, honestly I was seriously thinking about packing up my microphone and quitting the show.

A Travel Blogger's Tale Of An Untamed Soul: with Alise Saunders
Wouldn’t it be great if you could just leave your job, travel AND make a living doing it?
In 2018, Alise left her corporate life and six-figure salary, feeling like she wasn’t living life fully. She created her first business, a virtual bookkeeping company, and two years later realized and embraced her dream of being a travel blogger.

Stuck in a Funk? Try Some Beach! with Judi Dunlap

A Gen-Z Perspective: Kristen Gmerek of Remember the Sunfowers

Life is crazy right now – and not “crazy good” as I like to say. It's the kind that completely uproots everything you know and turns it inside out kind of crazy.
It's like a movie with wayyyy too many plot twists.
As if a pandemic and complete economic nightmare wasn’t enough, throw in an earthquake or two, some giant murder hornets (what the what?) and now, unspeakable murders by the police, peaceful citizen protests threatened with tear gas and military force, and Bible brandishing (ok, that was just strange).

It all started on a complete whim by Owyn and her mother Laurie Moffitt, in the little town of Fernandina Beach, Florida.
Owyn has always loved the ocean. Her first word as a baby was "beach." By the time she was four years old she was determined that when she grew up, she would be a marine biologist and study the whales.
Years later with the same determination she had at 4 years old, she enrolled at Florida Atlantic University and discovered by the end of her freshman year that Marine Biology was not going to work out. Let’s say, Math and Chemistry were not her forte. Mental Health and the Role of Telepsychiatry: Margaret Parnell and Amy McLaughlin
We have a problem - a* big problem* - and let’s face it, we’re at a point where we *have *to talk. Because, it’s getting personal. . .

When they asked me over for tea to pick my brain about the ins and outs of podcasting, I expected just an informal chat about my experienced so far.
Little did I know, they had - what I think - is a fabulous idea for a podcast…of their own!
And they had a LOT of questions.
So, When I opened up my “bag of tricks” – meaning, my recording equipment – to show them what I use, before the first question even came out, they said, *“Let’s record this!”*
Leave it to these two to have what I call the *vision **beyond** the vision* – and believe me - they make things happen!
And for me: well, there’s nothing like showing up for tea - and leaving with a podcast!

Everything Matters with Dennis and Kathy Lang
I first met Dennis and Kathy Lang at their full moon yoga class here in Jacksonville Beach and, let me tell you, whether you’re a novice or an experienced yoga practitioner, you will walk away from the experience feeling relaxed, more aware of the mind/body connection, and perhaps inspired – maybe even a little enlightened! After that class, I said: “ I have to have them on the podcast!”
While Dennis and Kathy do teach yoga here at The Beaches, they travel the world , leading yoga/meditation retreats and workshops. You can also find many of their guided meditations and music on the popular meditation app: Insight Timer (which I use almost daily).

Paige on The Talking Heads and Passion
I have many podcast heroes - one of which is Jonathan Fields, creator and host of The Good Life Project. Prior to recording this episode, I was reading one of his recent blog posts about The Talking Heads’ iconic song “Once in a Lifetime.” I loved the message and thought I’d share it with you.
When Jonathan posed the question: “What if we took ownership of our past…Learned from where we’ve been. Then, closed the books on what got us here…to plot a different course forward?” It got me thinking...
I began to ponder the question that seems to be on everyone’s mind these days: “What is my *passion*?” While the path to passion is unique to each one of us, I wanted to share some of my ideas.
